Anyone else use geocaching profile badges?

Recommended Posts

After a bit of geocaching, I started picking up random geocaching programs to help me along. I found one that has macros, along with a "BadgeGen" macro, giving you geocaching badges for things like attending events, how many micros you found, CITO events you've attended... And thought it brought a fun addition to geocaching, and another challenge!

At the moment I've only gained a bronze "The Busy Cacher" badge, after finding 14 caches in one day (Was one find off from gaining a diamond! Bronze is 10 finds in a day, diamond 15, then emerald, gold, platinum, ruby, silver, and sapphire...), but trying for a "Daily Cacher" badge, which is 5 or more days in a row caching.

1. GSAK is not "a random geocaching program". It is the geocaching program :)

2. I don't care much for badges on my geocaching profile. But if it is your thing, I believe mygeocachingprofile.com generates them, and there's one for earthcaches as well.

3. I'm seriously addicted to the stats on FindStatGen (though I don't bother posting it in my profile - too much work, and it's only to amuse myself). I find myself feeling an irrational sense of accomplishment whenever I can fill in another square on "days cached", on the D/T grid, and so on.

I also love all the stats that FindStatsGen produces, but "too much work" to put them in your profile? All it takes is a cut-n-paste. I don't use the "days cached" stat (it would be pretty sparse anyway) but I like comparing the average number of finds per day/month, the number of days cached in the month and comparing it to previous years. The finds by miles from home is interesting to watch as the % of finds over 200 miles from home (15.45%) gets closer to percentage of finds less than 10 miles (22.9%) from home. I have also found a greater percentage of caches 20-40 miles from home then I have less than 10 miles from home. The total cache-to-cache distance is also fun. I'm currently at 95896 miles with an average of a hair under 96 miles between caches.

The "I also like watching new states and countries turning red when I've found a new cache in a new place. I'll be adding two more states on monday.

I would welcome badgers on my profile...

There you go.

Or maybe this one?

Every profile needs

.

Ha! Beat me too it. Someone hid a cache in Rochester, NY, with the coordinates hidden in that infamous video. I'm sure it's archived now.

I'm pretty sure the OP is talking about mygeocachingprofile.com. You can also generate military style ribbons and medals from The Central Ontario Geocachers website. A good number of them are specific to their region though.

It's keeping it constantly updated that's too much work - if I put it up, I can pretty much guarantee they'll remain out of date an average of 3 months :)

My favorite useless statistics - maximum distance in a day : 8488 miles B)

Yes it does :)

I see someone is a fan B)

I like FindStatGen3 better because they contain so much useless but fun statistics, and it is infinitely customizable. I've edited the code myself to change things more to my liking (for example, for the line charts to start at 0 instead of # of finds during first month of geocaching). I've also adapted it to show DNF stats but that code needs some polishing up.

Hmm. I'm running a version of FindStats which is so old it was loaded from punch cards.

I can see I have some catching up to do on Self Promotion Technology. :)

I run a macro once in a while, when I get around to it, just for the fun to see if anything has changed much. The usual thing is my daily caching streak, which will be ending in the next month or so (unfound local caches becoming so scarce I'm returning to 3 time DNFs.) Other milestones and statistics are mostly a curiousity.

I like that badge generator! I edited it to remove the elevation calculations which take forever to run, and aren't much use since they include locationless... and I live in a very flat area of the country. Email me if you'd like to try it. I'll probably post it in the gsak forums too. :)

Speaking of which, what is that drawing you use as your profile photo? Werewolf?

The drawing is of Coyote, known as The Trickster in many Native American tribes. Good friend of Badger!

Wish I could I could make up some good story about the drawing, but actually I just snagged it off of Wikipedia.

Maybe I'll try that one too and see if I like it. I like mygeocaching profile, but I'm not stuck on it or anything. Thanks!

OK, sorry. last off topic post: For anyone who doesn't know it, you can see a larger image of anyone's avatar by clicking on their profile and then clicking on the avatar.

Not always. Not everyone's avatar is larger than 75X75. Mine for example is only 75X75, my profile picture is larger though.

Hello,

I just downloaded the "BadgeGen" macro but it doesn't work! It starts, then I adjust the settings and click on "OK" and it runs. But after it has loaded the elevation information, GSAK brings up an error message and the macro stops. That happens even if I uncheck the "Elevation" box in the macro settings dialog box. It even happens when I uncheck ALL boxes!

I hope someone can help me! It's annoying... :)

You can get much better help from the GSAK forums on this issue - I find them very responsive. If you'd like some help, tell us what the error message is.

The techie who runs my stats plays around with them from time to time. For the elevation, it was nice to see Mount Washington, NH. That was quite a climb. But none of the caches listed as being 'below sea level' actually were. I've been known to cache along the Hudson River, in NYC, and along the Jersey Shore. Precision is good, but accuracy is better.

The 'maximum distance in one day' is just silly. It sayd 750 miles, it was probably closer to 150. Perhaps I didn't log them in order; perhaps the stats generator listed them by 'date placed' rather than 'date found'. Again, accuracy is better than precision.

But my stats will be updated afer my upcoming trp to color in three new states.

What you want is the "GenUploadStats" macro. That one runs FindStatGen and then uploads it to your profile, all in one fell swoop! Only gotcha is that it completely overwrites what's there.

is there a badge gen list somewhere that shows all the badges and also what requirements there are ??

im a basic member so dont have a PQ to run thru GSAK to generate the badges for me, But do love the look on profile pages, so i have manually produced some of the stats that feature on many profile pages

but at present cannot located anywhere that i can get access to the images (apart from stealling ;) them off other profiles) but i dont know the numbers need for what level badge to "steal"

Oh, I don't know about self-promotion technology. I have a "badge" at the top of my profile, but it's just sort of a joke. I'm not a numbers person, but I've been fascinated by statistics since I was like 7 years old. Must be a geek thing, and I certainly am one. There are certainly many sources of statistics out there, badges or no.
