Garmin GPS 64s Preloaded Geocaches issues

Recommended Posts

Im having an issue it may be just me being stupid, but i purchased my Garmin 64s last week and i was really impressed with the function that it has preloaded geocaches on.

Today i went to use the function and it registered as 0 geocaches nearby. I also know that i have downloaded caches off the geoaching.com website onto my GPS. I also knew that the nearest cache was less than 500m away.

does anyone know how this could be resolved or why it is happening?

Thanks

Luke

I have a 64S and had the same problem. It work at first and then at some point it would report no geocaches found. I could load new geocaches and it would work again until i turned it off and then the problem would reoccur. I have also seen reports about the 62S where this problem was reported. I called Garmin support and they went through a number of trouble shooting steps and could not resolve the problem. They gave me the option to ship back for repair but i exchanged it at REI instead. When i got the new one home, i loaded some caches from the web site and now it seams that 250K that were preloaded are no longer accessible. The down side of the preloaded geocaches is that they do not get updated.

I backed up my entire 64s, then dove into the "GGZ" folder and deleted the three files in that folder that pertain to the pre-loaded geocaches. I then went and loaded up my own pocket queries files in GPX format into the GPX folder on the 64s. If Garmin isn't going to keep the huge GGZ file showing hundreds of thousands of caches updated, it's kind of like what's the point?

Did removing the pre-loaded Geocaches fix the problem of "No Geocachesfound"?

I fired up the new replacement i picked up last night and an having the same problem all over again. Must be related to some configuration or other content with a conflict.

Thanks for the help guys, i think im going to pop into Cotswolds over the weekend and explain the situation.

It may also have something to do with when i plug in anything through USB it automatically corrects any errors that windows sees as a problem.

This migt of actually corrupted the file it needed to work. But who knows im still waiting a reply from garmin on the matter.

There is a well known problem with Garmin's that appears to have continued. All of a sudden they will show no caches. Happens to me about once a month. The recommended solution is.

Put the caches on a sdcard (not the unit) and when you see none

turn it off

remove the sdcard

turn it on and let it boot

turn it off

install the sdcard

reboot and there they are

You will notice when you reboot the thermometer across the bottom reloading because it sees them as new.

This is especially nice when you are in the middle of a 30 mile bike ride or a 10 mile hike and all of a sudden no cachesx

I see why this would help for your own caches uploading ive done it myself loading them onto the SD card, although the Card in my 64s actually has all the OS Maps on for Great Britain. So I really dont want to mess them up! And I did update my firmware from 2.60 to 2.80 on the device.

I sent Garmin a detail explanation of my issue I was having with "No Geocaches found" and received this reply.

Dear xxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I am happy to assist you today.

Garmin often releases updates for devices to improve performance, correct bugs or add new features. This update will only update the internal operating system software and not mapping detail preloaded to the device.

The software update may erase user data that has been saved to the device. Before performing the software update, back up all userdata (waypoints, routes, and tracks). For instruction on backing up userdata from the device, please refer to the FAQ titled "How do I backup userdata (waypoints, routes, and tracks) from my Outdoor USB Device handheld?".

To update your device's software a program called WebUpdater will need to be downloaded and installed. There are instructions at the bottom of the download page that will help with the installation of the program. Once the program has been installed, please follow the on screen prompts to complete the update process.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

In what way did Justin at Garmin support possible think that this was any help? What a worthless company!

I followed this advice and my unit will now show my Geocaches even after i turn it on and off. Have not seen the error yet.

I backed up the unit, and installed a card. Deleted the the three preloaded files from the GGZ folder. Then loaded pocket queries, maps and personal way points to the card. now it seems to be working every time.

So it looks like you have have the out of date preloaded Geocaches or have your own but not both.

That's what I'm kinda thinking, too.

I don't know if you've seen this one yet, but I stumbled across another likely bug -- this one also relating to the map screen and caches:

If you load, for example, a GPX file that has some caches with a size of "Other" or "Not Chosen", they will by default not show up on the map each time you power-on the unit. (But will strangely show in the Cache Listing list page, so they definitely made it onto the unit.) Each time from the map screen after power-on, you have to press "Menu" -> "Geocache Filter" -> "Apply Filter". Then these missing caches will magically show up on the map. And this is despite the fact that the caching filter page already has *everything* enabled, including all sizes of caches. Once you turn off the GPS, this setting is seemingly not remembered (despite making no actual changes). So when you turn it back on, you have to go and click "Apply Filter" again. Argh, frustrating.

I wrote to Garmin detailing this problem and they said it was normal functionality. I don't recall ever seeing that with my past 62s or Oregon 450! I can only hope they are reading these threads... not much else I can do about it.

So I went into Cotswolds (an outdoor shop in the UK for those who don't know, and they suggested that a factory reset may solve this problem. And you know what its worked!! I have lost any tracks and waypoints that were on my device but i can reinstall them from my laptop.

If anyone else is having this problem this might fix it!

Had this same aggravating issue w/ my GPSMAP 64S, & was about 10 minutes away from returning it completely for a refund... Simply deleting the GGZ files & then rebooting worked temporarily for one reboot cycle; but after cycling power, all my geocaches would all be lost again as described.

I ended up backing up all of my GPX files (waypoints & geocache list) & then deleted the whole entire folder along with the three stock GGZ files completely (some of the 250K caches were out of date anyways & the list was incomplete for my area).

Performed a "Hard Reset" after deletion, reinstalled the last firmware update, performed another "Hard Reset" after booting up, & then transferred all the waypoint GPX files back onto the device with the geocache GPX file on the SD card.

So far, no problems at all with the device itself (Other than the poor screen resolution that's hard to use for mentally planning a route on the fly & as you are walking in unfamiliar areas).

I seriously wish Garmin would lock the cursor in the middle of the screen where moving the curser on the map would cause the map to move (rather than the curser having autonomy until it hits the edge of the window where then you hit zoom & you've lost your sight picture & point of reference, where you then have to zoom back out, scroll back to your location to understand what the heck you're looking at... Love the accuracy of the device in thick tree cover that I often find myself in where my cellphone craps out GPS wise & signal wise; but hate the screen resolution & utterly cannot stand the freely moving cursor as it forces me to sit down & take 2 minutes to figure out what the heck I'm looking at & plan by semi-blind waypoints, all the while my dog & I are getting eaten alive by mosquitos...

Garmin needs to come out with a GPSMAP platform device in it's same exact button format w/ the Oregon 600 Screen resolution (minus touchscreen) & a way to lock the curser in the middle of the display... This is what the 64S should have been & I'd gladly pay $500 for it. I'm highly tempted to exchange the 64S for the now $200 62S and wait until Garmin comes out with a worthwhile upgrade (from what I read on the interwebs, many others are in this same boat of thinking...)...

An upgrade to firmware 3.00 solved my issue :D

Just bought a new GPS 64st to replace my worn out 62s and I'm having the same issues with Geocaches disappearing after one or more power cycles. I did upgrade to firmware 3.00 and unfortunately that didn't make any difference. From what I'm reading, it seems like most workarounds people are taking are simply forcing a re-read of whatever type of file is holding the caches (GPX or GGZ). Am I thinking about this correctly?

When you want to load a new file, do these steps:

1. Plug GPS to computer, and delete old GPX or GGZ file(s).

2. Unplug GPS, and boot it and it will clear it's memory.

3. Plug GPS to computer, and install new GPX or GGZ file(s).

4. Unplug GPS, and boot it and it will read new file(s).

I started doing this "double-clutching" with my 62s a year ago and then I never had any problems any more. I continue to do this with my new 64s because it's a habit. Only takes a few extra seconds while sitting at my desk, and saves grief while I'm out on the trail.

This fairly well known issue pops up on almost all Garmins. It is the reason many recommend putting the caches on an sdcard so the "double clutch" can be done in the field by removing and replacing it with the appropriate reboots. That worked great for in the middle of a 30 mike caching bike ride when all the caches disappeared.

It happened yesterday at the start of my ride.

Boy I wish I would have read this page prior to calling Garmin yesterday and spending 75 minutes on the phone with them. They had me do all of the things mentioned above. They also told me that I need to perform a "safely remove function" from the PC because they have found that not using this function will corrupt the data. They also mentioned that I should try their Base Camp program for loading caches instead of GSAK. I have been using the "safely remove function" on the PC (the same one that you use for removing a thumb drive) and I have started using the Base Camp program (loaded 5 or 6 pocket queries). Well so far (24 hours) it's seems to be working pretty well. I have had the unit on and off multiple time over the past day and no issues so far.

Agreed with Lil Devil. This procedure works.

A little background: My 64s is a (rapid) replacement/upgrade from the 62stc I got to replace my workhorse DeLorme PN-60, itself a replacement for a G-60Cs. The 64s is a big improvement over the 62stc, which was probably a lemon. It only (sort of) worked for about 10 days.

Base Camp appears to work better when deleting content from the internal drive or SD card, especially when you are dealing with GPX files; the 64s makes "current" .gpx files which can be confounding. I haven't seen this behavior while using .ggz files, which you can just delete using your choice of file explorer. The "search for" function seems like a poorly implemented afterthought. It is easier to find caches using a filter, and if they are farther away, using the map and scrolling in/out and around (setting cache sensitivity distance to a mile or so out helps here).

As for loading caches to the unit, I have had the best results using lignumaqua's GarminExport macro in GSAK, and selecting GGZ on the SD card. You can filter out caches you don't want (e.g., unsolved puzzles) and export just about as many caches as you want to the unit, avoiding the GPX 5,000 waypoint limit. I presently have all of the caches I qualify for/have solved and not found yet in my state loaded up this way; that's about 9,400 of them, ranging from a mile to about 300 miles out, in one file. Not sure how many GGZ files you can load before the unit chokes, but fewer is probably better as far as boot up/indexing times are concerned.

So far, the GSAK forum has been the most helpful with figuring out how to operate this GPSr. If it was a computer, it would be a Mac. My DeLorme is more like a *nix or Windows box. YMMV.

I just bought a 64s. Silly me, I thought I could simply go in to Geocaching.com and add caches to it, like I did with my 60CSX. I didn't know I had to dig and dig on the internet and sort through a bunch of computer-ese to try to figure out how to use it. I'm close to returning it.

Chalk up another problem for the 64s. I went through two of them before giving up and reverting back to my old 60csx. In sympathy with the original poster, I had the same issue . . . along with accuracy problems related to recorded distances and other big time dissatisfactions. Nope, I just gave up.

My advice to perpulady is give up your 64s while you are still able to return it.

In fairness to Garmin, this is the first outright dud model I've encountered. My old 60csx is great as are the two Nuvi's I've purchased: one for wife's car and one for a car the "youngin's" share. Even my old original E-trex provided all the functionality it was advertised as having and that is a LOT more than I can say for my experience with the 64s.

I was having this same problem... could load the caches via GGZ or GPX but after reboot they would disappear. If I connected to a computer and renamed the files, they would reload; but after the next power cycle would disappear. I tracked this down to the set of custom maps in my Custom Maps folder. There was either a bad file or bad filename or too many of them... not sure. Anyway, I renamed the Custom Maps folder to Custom MapsXX and it worked. I then deleted all of my custom maps except for one I really wanted to keep and all is well. I may go all them back one by one to see if it was just a corrupt file or if the naming was the cause or if just hitting a limit; but for not it works fine. Thought I would add this input to the thread in case anyone else stumbles upon this discussion and it helps someone.

I know this is an old thread, but apparently there is still a problem.  I've just encountered it--"No Geocaches Found"--even though the .gpx files appear on my 64st (I've long since deleted the pre-loaded .ggz files).  My suspicion--from this recent experience--is that it may be Windows related.  Here's why...

Until last night, I've had no problems (of this nature) whatsoever.  I've been doing everything directly--copying/dragging/deleting extracted .gpx files on & off the 64st directly via File Explorer (not using Basecamp, GSAK, or anything else).  My computer is a bit outdated--I'm still running Vista.  Coupla days ago, I ran into a problem of trying to fit too many .gpx files onto the 64st.  In trying to solve that problem, I downloaded GSAK onto my DW's laptop, which is running Windows 10 (because GSAK ostensibly won't run on Vista*).  I plugged the 64st into her laptop to copy the .gpx files into GSAK.  After disconnecting it is when I started getting the "No Geocaches Found" message.  I didn't immediately make the connection; I tried looking up troubleshooting the 64st, which recommended things like removing & replacing the batteries, backing up data files & restoring factory settings...  None of that worked--then I found this thread, and LukePackham's mention above...

Quote

It may also have something to do with when i plug in anything through USB it automatically corrects any errors that windows sees as a problem.

Not USB, but Windows! (methinks ;))  I still had copies of everything that was on the 64st from before copying onto it, so (as described above) I deleted everything in the Garmin/GPX directory, powered it up (to recognize the files had been deleted), recopied the (presumably uncorrupted) .gpx files back onto the 64st, powered it up again, and VOYLA!  Now I've still got to reconfigure the 64st again, but things could be worse.

I could be wrong, but since everything was fine before getting Windows 10/GSAK involved, and went kaflooey immediately after, it doesn't seem too far-fetched to me to suspect/wonder about something there...

Does this make sense to anyone else?  Or could it be GSAK?  I dunno.  YMMV.

GSAK only runs on Windows operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10)

It isn't uncommon for Garmins to fail to properly load caches. It's happened to me often enough that a standard part of my caching days is to turn on the device and check that the caches are actually there before leaving the house.

When it happens, the typical fix is just what you did: remove the files, power on the device without them to clear things out, then load the files again. Now, it could be that you just had bad luck to have it happen twice in quick succession, or it could be something more. That it happened after you used GSAK is probably just a coincidence. Lots of people use GSAK and might never run into this problem. If it happens yet again, then there'd need to be more troubleshooting to figure out what's going on.

Possibly a silly question: are you using the "eject" function when disconnecting the device from your computer? Unplugging the device without doing this can cause file corruption and lead to the same symptoms.

Garmin could fix this with a software update. The algorithm to reindex the GPX files is apparently already in the firmware as that is what the manual workaround does by forcing the reindex process. It seems to me all Garmin would have to do is add a "Reindex" selection to the Setup/Reset menu that would access this algorithm and reindex the files. it is ridiculous that this problem has existed on multiple devices for many years and Garmin doesn't fix it.

Good to know (the first part)--too bad it never came up in any reviews or discussions I'd read/posted to before buying the thing.

Checking ahead of time... this last time it went kaflooey, I did.  It worked fine the first couple/three times I turned it on, then the next time... nada.  If I'd been in the field...

IIRC, twice that it happened was after I messed with the menus/customizing things.  Everything worked, I made some changes, and turned it off.  The the next time I turned it on, it couldn't find the caches.

See next response.

There are a lot of details missing that makes helping very difficult. But I will add that this is the very reason I like to keep all my GPX/GGZ files on the uSD card, so while in the field, I can simply remove the card, reboot, install the card, reboot, and viola!

Based on earlier responses, that's what we did.  To save time (get out there while the weather was still good) we went to the local pharmacy to pick up a cheap chip.  The smallest they had was 32gb, but they were on sale 2/1.  So far, so good, but I haven't got the customizing back where I'd like it yet....

Hey!

Is anyone still struggling with this problem in 2018?

I have GPSMAP 64st and I have tried everything ... I deleted preloaded ggz files and stil pops up "No Geocaches Found" after each reboot of the device.

The only solution that works - caches in GPX installed on the SD Card and pulling out it every time when cachces are disappear , this is really annoying..

Is there a bunch of losers in this garmin company who can not solve this problem for such a long time? (I found entries from 2014 regarding this problem)

does anyone have any working solution?

Yoss..

My 64sc has behaved this way a few times.  I learned to load my GSAK exported PQs on the card, so when this happens I pull the card, boot up, shut down, reinsert card and boot up.  Just this weekend I did an "erase all user data" by holding both the Enter and Page buttons, then pressing the Power button.  As soon as the Garmin icon shows release the Power button but continue to press the Enter and Page.

A screen will come up saying, "Do you really want to erase all user data".  Say Yes.  It's a bit of a pain as this also resets some of your custom settings.  At least in this instance it let me power up and all caches were there.  I'll have to see if this step solves this issue over time.

I bought a 64st 2 weeks ago, and had all the preloaded Geocaches disappear. I sent an email to Garmin tech support, and they responded that there was no way to recover, and that I should go to Geocaching.com to load geocaches that way. I'm having a problem with that too, but more on that later.

After discovering this tread today, I tried backing up, then removing the GGZ files, and rebooting the GPS. Then I reinstalled the GGZ files, and rebooted the GPS. It came up with the message about loading preloaded geocaches, and that it might take about 20 minutes, and do I want to do that. I said yes. That just finished, and the preloaded geocaches are now there. So YEA!  At least I think so. Sounds like them might disappear again.

Back to Geocaching.com.  I could never "send to GPS" a single geocache.  There seems to be a Looooongggg problem with the internet browser Garmin extension needed to do that. I tried with Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Edge. Nothing worked.

Then I created a "List" of several geocaches, and there is a "send to gps" function for lists. That worked. Now I have been trying to reorganize my GPS by sending the Geocaches from the unit memory, to the SD memory card using Basecamp. After doing that, the geocaches did not show up as geocaches, but only as Waypoints. So I decided to delete them all, and then let Geocaching.com send the list to my GPS like the first time. NOW THAT DOESN'T WORK??!!

That's when I discovered this thread, and am at the point of now having reloaded the original ~250 preloaded geogaches.

Link to comment

Here's an update after performing the delete GGZ/Reboot/Restore GGZ/Reboot and choosing to load the preloaded geocache files (took about 20 minutes).

The preloaded geocache files show up. But, TRUE TO FORM WITH GARMIN, the list is VERY OLD. No geocaches in my area which have been placed more recently than 2014 are in the list of preloaded geocaches. SO IT"S ESSENTIALLY WORTHLESS.

Now I'm going to try to load, from geocaching.com, the missing caches in my area.  As I recall, that process is what blew up the whole thing originally for me. I'll report on what happens.

By the way, it looks like there is an SQL database resident in the GPS, and that is where I think it keeps a lot of this stuff. I think the GGZ file is a datafile that gets read into the database.  Once it's there, I'm not sure why it gets blown out.

Link to comment

The preloaded files aren't up to date.  You don't see the recent logs.  They aren't practical.  Back them up, they're cool for historical research (looking for old cache sites when they may have been archived).  Other than that, a good practice is to delete all those factory GGZ files.  Backup and delete everything in the Garmin/GPX folder, too.  Then turn the device off, then back on, so the database gets initialized.  Now try "Send To Garmin" from your lists.  Bet it works. :)

If you wish to send just a cache or two, click "GPX File" from any cache page, save it into the Garmin/GPX folder on the GPS.

Basecamp will see all files in its database and on the GPS (and the maps!), and it can move the GPX files as you like.  You don't even need Basecamp if you save Lists or Pocket Queries.  Basecamp is good for cache planning.  I read that it doesn't read GGZ files, but I don't work with GGZ files, so I can't advise hot you may use them with Basecamp.

Well, I'm not sure what's happening now.  I had previously made a "List" on geocaching.com for about 80 caches in my area. I successfully used the "Send to Garmin" option available in the view of that list.

Today, when I was trying to move the GPX files from the main GPS memory, to the memory card (using BaseCamp), that is when everything blew up.  So I deleted all of the geocaches using BaseCamp, and tried to reload them using the same list and process in geocaching.com. That process invokes Garmin Express to load the list to the GPS, but that fails giving the message

"REQUEST ERROR - There is a problem with the content being sent. Try sending  the content again."

So far, I have not been able to get it to work again.  I'd rather not do a tedious loading of individual GPX files.

Sorry, didn't see your instructions on deleting the GPX files. I'll try that and report back. Thanks.

Well, I've deleted the GGZ files, and that cleared all the preloaded geocaches from the GPS (haven't been able to find a way to manually delete individual or "All" geocaches).

I also backed up and deleted the files in the GPX directory.

But am still unable to get the "Send to Garmin" function to work.

tried to reload them using the same list and process in geocaching.com. That process invokes Garmin Express to load the list to the GPS, but that fails giving the message

You should take a look at this thread:

I'm going to provide you with a couple of tips:

1. Stop using basecamp with geocaches. I'm not saying this is the root of your problem, but Basecamp does rewrite the GPX files and does not include any Groundspeak extensions. Do use basecamp for managing your tracks, routes, and regular waypoints. But avoid touching the geocaches.

The GPX files provided by Groundspeak are put directly in the /Garmin/GPX folder on your device or on your SD card. If you're using the Send List to Garmin function, you can just go the GPX folder on the device and drag that file over to the GPX folder on the SD card (then delete it from the device) all from a couple of Explorer windows.

2. If you're going to use the Send List to Garmin function, make sure your Garmin Express is up to date. That's the most likely problem you had there. But since this feature only writes directly to the device without the option to write the geocaches to the SD card, this feature is not always the ideal method.

3. The alternate of Send List to Garmin is to create a pocket query from your list. Also, pocket queries in general are just awesome. When you download the resulting file, just unzip and move the GPX files over to the GPX folder on your SD card.

4. If you find yourself keeping a large collection of geocaches on your device because you never know where you'll be on any given day, and thus you find yourself keeping  8 or 10 pocket queries up to date on  a weekly basis, manually unzipping and moving the files gets old fast. You can write a shell script to automate this process. Or you can use a cache manager (GSAK or iCaching). These will download your pocket queries directly from the server, let you curate a database, and export them with whatever filters you set up. You can even export them as a GGZ file (in which case, put the file in the GGZ folder on your SD card).

As noted in some other threads, you need to uninstall Garmin Express and download/reinstall Garmin Express to correct this error. For some reason just using the built in "Check for updates" function of Garmin Express won't update Garmin Express properly.
