DeLorme PN-40

With the PN-40 if you are still using firmware versions 2.6 or below, you will likely need to change your usual procedures in order to geocache in the future. Instead of being able to use the newly deprecated (by the Major Browser security geeks) "plugin" Send feature of Delorme Topo8 era, you will likely be required to switch to downloading current PN-40 2.9 device firmware for your waypoint (geocache) file management.

If you already are using Delorme PN-40 2.8 or later device firmware, you should be able to copy Groundspeak Pocket Query geocaching downloads in unzipped *.gpx format into a PN-40 SDHC card folder named "Geocache" or "Waypoint" using Windows Explorer. Search this forum or the Delorme user forum for further information.

sounds familiar. I think I had to do this somewhere in the past. Thanks for the info. got the .gpx loaded but can't figure out how to get both the .gpx and the waypoints loaded at the same time.

found some help. I ended up opening up IE11 and accessing the geocaching website through that browser instead of the Edge and I was able to Send To GPS from all the caches I wanted to load.

Try this and see if it works for you:

Open IE11 ( Start => All apps => Windows Acessories => Internet Explorer )

then browse to geocaching.com and sign in and give it a go!

May I respectfully suggest that Delorme PN-40 users as well as other geocachers study up on use of downloaded zipped gpx file downloads from Groundspeak before all legacy browser plugins are deprecated. Although I do not actively geocache, I do keep a downloaded zipped *.gpx file of 500 geocache symbolized waypoints around to see how they currently work in the few devices and apps that may cross my path.

Same with Netflix devices. After I finally figured out that my old Netflix box firmware had been deprecated for similar security reasons, I reluctantly bought a new binge-worthy USB Wi-Fi/TV streaming video device.

I have a PN-40, I have not used it for around 18mo's. My son wants to go Geocaching, when I try to send to GPS it won't because i need to download the software. Every time I try it wants a USER and password?????

Never had this come up before.

same problem! :( won't work on windows 10 or on old laptop with windows 7. (have tried every browser on both computers) even after downloading latest plugin & updating firmware it still locks me out of loading any geocache info. This makes my delorme PN-40 worthless for caching. Does anyone have a fix or is this collusion between

to force us all to buy new devices?

Well, the PN series has been in enough trouble for a few years, so I doubt anyone's going to bother to collude over it.

I haven't tried the individual cache download for a long time, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's broken. And I never used the Delorme download mechanisms, so I wouldn't know about them.

What I use are pocket queries, and they work fine. You do need to upgrade the PN-40 firmware to the latest version (which is 3 or 4 years old now, as I recall), but with new firmware, you can simply copy the .gpx files in a pocket query into the waypoints directory on the USB disk the PN-40 presents.

I'm not surprised you have to create a login account to get the firmware, but I don't see that as a big problem, especially considering that the PN-40 is little better than a brick without it.

Just found a way to make the Delorme plugin work for my windows 10 laptop. Went to Internet Explorer..(actually it opens in "Edge"). Opened Geocaching.com. Then click three little dots in upper right corner and selected from dropdown options to "open with Internet Explorer". Then the downloader started working again the way it used to....at least for about 10 minutes till IE crashed & had to re-boot again.... hope that helps...

I still use my PN40 as a back up, still a great gps. Will not work with windows 10 edege browser. use IE 11 and if I remember, it will also work with fire fox. I download a PQ once a week and load them on both my Oregon 450 and pn40 to keep GC's up to date

Delorme hasn't released a new handheld GPSr in...what, 6 years? And they more or less gave up supporting the devices with any new firmware or computer-side software about 5 years ago. If they're trying to push you to a new device, it'd be from another vendor.

Now that Garmin owns DeLorme, I think we have seen the end of the PN line.

The end of the PN line was 5+ years ago. Delorme bailed on the handheld dedicated GPS market a long time ago - PLBs provided a stream of income vs. a one-time $300 purchase.

I'm only in this thread because I was browsing the forums to find out what the current hotness is for GPSrs as my PN-40 has a flaky internal connection and is borderline dead now. It had a good 7 1/2 year run.

I was sad to see that happen. The pn40 & 60 is still a good gpsr, I would not buy another new one because they're discontinued. but still work as well as any of them. I have no problem downloading caches to them through send to gps or using pq's. Using send to gps you have to use ie 11, will not work on windows 10 edge browser. There still getting a high price for them on ebay, if I found one at the right price it would make a good spare.

I deprecated the delbin protocol in GPSBabel. Delorme's showed no signs of life in years for the PN devices.. The protocol, doc, and implementation was always poor quality and since they added support for GPX years ago, there's no reason for it to linger on now that Garmin has bought their remains. Delbin in GPSBabel is out.

I have Topo NA 10.0 installed on both my W10 laptop and W7 desktop. I downloaded and installed the Topo10patch update from Delorme.

https://support.delorme.com/kb/articles/43-geocaching-com-patch-for-topo-north-america-10

This allows Premium Members to logon to geocaching.com and having their active Pocket Query files downloaded to Topo 10 after selecting and clicking on Map Files, then Geocaching, Log In (first time only), finally Update.

For those PQs with an associated child, waypoint file, Topo 10 will combine them into one file.

Topo NA 10.0 may then be used to export these files in GPX format for installing in either a PN-40 or PN-60, both having the most recent firmware.

That's a lot of money for a gps'r that's been discontinued. For $200 you can get a newer, better gps. Even on ebay used pn40 & 60 are going for $150 plus. I have a pn40 that has the latest firmware, mine came with topo 8.0 which I don't use. My pq's I just drag and drop onto my sd card and I'm good to go. I keep it as a back-up to my Oregon 450 sure like the bigger screen on the 450 but the pn40 is just as accurate and does paperless geocaching.
