+JessupFamily
I currently have a Garmin 62s. I also run Linux Mint 7.3 on my laptop. Not so thrilled with the Garmin, love the Linux. Does anyone know of a program to use to put Pocket Queries onto my gps via my Mint? Alternatively, is there a better gps out there that would work with Mint? I've been out of the gc game for a few years due to babies... switched user names. Not a newbie by any stretch. Just not loving my 62, wish we still had our old Magellan. Have found inputting manually the coordinates into the gps difficult and swearing is generally frowned upon in front of small humans. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Not that I'm familiar with mint, but all you do is mount the GPS as an external drive and copy the pocket query over to the Garmin/GPX directory. I assume that the OS allows external drives to be connected. No programs required. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
I'll also add that if you have an old profile, Groundspeak will happily change the username on it for you. There is no need to create a new account. Quote Link to comment
+Viajero Perdido
I assume you meant Mint 17.3, not 7.3. I'm running Mint 17, but I'm not sure I can help you beyond what Red90 suggested; I no longer get the Linux system involved in cache wrangling. (Now it's all direct between the Locus* app and Groundspeak's API.) And having given up using the old Garmin, I no longer need to run GSAK regularly; that sits all dusty inside an old Windows VM inside the Linux box. Mounting the Garmin as an external drive should work as expected; it always did for me. You might need to put it into "mass storage mode" or somesuch first. * PS, I highly recommend Locus+Android if you're not happy with the Garmin. This combination should have Garmin worried. +van der Decken
Open Cache Manager has worked well with my 62sc. The 62s appear as an external drive and you could just copy GPXs over to it but it's handy having the ability to organize things external to the GPS and then just transfer what you want for that day. I'm curious eBay you are using for mapping while using Linux though? the resort comments about locus are pretty spot on, it's much easier with it Quote Link to comment
+JessupFamily
Thank you for the OCM link! This looks fantastic. And yes, 17.3 sigh... I really have loved the transition to Linux, only finding one program that didn't have a Linux version that I liked. per the 62 issues... The main issue I remember having was not being able to transition from one PQ to another when we changed locations. And then recently, the difficulty of manually putting in coordinates for a cache and being able to get to the point. It worked out with our cell phones and the app that shall not be named, and then later the Geocaching app... but cell phone coverage is spotty at best and... If someone out there has the 62 could perhaps message me so that I can then ask questions as needed, that would be a huge help. On the other hand, have considered getting the Magellan GC model instead and maybe in addition to. Per user name... towards the end of the old name, our sky fell, replete with a FEMA #, and... it's complicated. But, yes, I think I might switch user name on old account and use this new one for my 8 year old daughter. A cacher we met on vacation suggested separate accounts for the kids so that when they're teens, they have a history already established. Thanks for the help all! It's nice to be back in GC land! +Mineral2
I wrote a BaSH script to unzip and install PQ files. Modify it for your needs as necessary. It works on a Mac, but I think it uses all of the same programs that are included with Linux. Quote Link to comment
+MartyBartfast
I've been Linux only for years, and while GSAK will run in wine after a fashion, I've never bothered. I import all my PQs into OpenCacheManager as above and then export what I need, then copy the resultant file onto the GPS in mass storage mode. Sadly development & support of OCM seems to have died a couple of years ago. I don't have the programming skills to take it on myself but I live in the hope that someone who does will come along and give it a new lease of life. gpsbabel is a useful command line tool for manipulating GPX files. There's also some interesting stuff here http://geo.rkkda.com/ Quote Link to comment

There's also some interesting stuff here http://geo.rkkda.com/ I'm having issues installing open cache onto my Mint. Neither the install nor configure file actually runs when I tell it to run. I can extract the files from the folder but after that - nothing. But, I freely admit that I am not skilled in this stuff and am learning as I go. That said, if it's not being supported, perhaps the latest versions of Mint are not compatible with it. I truly wish that I had the skills needed to do this. I wonder if there is a group of Linux folks in GC land that would take this project over? Quote Link to comment

How about taking over the OCM project since you clearly know what you're doing? Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Once again. You do not need any programs. Just copy the GPX files to the GPS. There is no need to make things complicated. Quote Link to comment

Thanks. I figured that out the first time. But, just like some like the GSAK program, others would like a Linux option. Anywho... Thanks for the help! Quote Link to comment
