Who's on 365/366?

Next Monday all being well (if the Americans don't send any more hurricanes our way ) I'll fill in calendar day 365/366, just under 22 months since starting out.

 

I imagine I'll be far from the only cacher then waiting patiently for 29th February 2016 to come around?

I was lucky enough to find a cache on the 29th in 2012, no waiting for me.

Yeah. I went out on lunch, in the bitter cold and snow in 2012 for an LPC.

Not me, I was out caching on 2/29/04 which fell on a Sunday. I found 9 that day, which was a lot back then.

Curiously I didn't get out caching on 2/29/08.

But I didn't finish the grid until June of 2011.

Well that was certainly an interesting excercise! Yes, 2/29/04 was a Sunday, and a lot of people who were around can probably claim that day, but I see I would have been driving home from an Army Reserve weekend in New Jersey 300+ miles from home. I usually did run out on lunch hour for a cache or two, I'll have to dig really deep to see if I had a DNF that day. 2/29/08 was a Friday, so it wouldn't be abnormal for me to not find a cache. I didn't get mine until 2/29/12, and I took the cheesy way out, and event (pretty much held specifically so people could fill in the calendar).

 

By the way, was there anyone, anywhere who was trying to fill in the calendar in 2004 or 2008? That's why mine wasn't filled in, who was even thinking of that? No one from my area, that's for sure. Maybe some other areas where challenge caches were popular earlier than my area.

Me too. Back then I was specifically looking to fill my calendar, so left a few very local caches so I'd have something to find quickly and easily in case the weather was awful.

At lunch I ticked off #60/81 on the D/T grid, went back to project-gc and increased the radius to help me home in on the missing 21 and found http://coord.info/GC4X2BJ , a 365 challenge, only about 30 miles from home! Some challenges are daft (the ones I can't do... obviously!) but I'll gladly pick this one up for a 5/2.5 as a reward for my efforts.

+1. I don't think I would say "Lucky". I planned that one out. I was also one of the many cachers who were hassling GS to add a Leap Day souvenir.

My other 2/3rds, the stat nut, had to get this day for some calender thing in '12.

Made sure we did a couple caches and an event inside an REI (can't take any chances...), so ended the day broke too.

A quick specific date filter in GSAK gave me my answer. I think that those of us who find numbers interesting enough to cache on leap day, 4/4/04 etc. or like to watch the odometer roll over were trying to find caches on those dates even before challenges, souvis, and stats became the big thing they are now.

I got two caches that was placed on the 29th of Feb. Both are in a rest stop to give people a chance to fill that spot without trying too hard.

Me too. Back then I was specifically looking to fill my calendar, so left a few very local caches so I'd have something to find quickly and easily in case the weather was awful.

Same with me! Knew where it was and saved it just for that day. Got it on the way to work in the middle of a mini-snowstorm! It was an LPC, but had a back-up planned just in case it was missing.

Been caching since Dec 31 2003.

 

Did not fill in February 29 till 2012. Fortunately we got 10 that day because we are now trying to get 10 caches on every day of the calendar. We now have 6 days with less than 10. We then will likely try to get 15 per date which means waiting till 2016 to accomplish that.

Sorry to veer off the OP's topic, and it is a good one for people who have to wait for a February 29th. HOWVER, most of the cache a day challenge caches I've personally seen let you slide for that one day.

 

Well, GSAK has been around forever (probably by 2002 or 2003), but I just looked at one of the oldest 3rd party cache statistics programs, CacheStats, and that came out in 2006. But who is to say the stuff like the Calendar and D/T grid were in there in the 2006 version?

 

As far as Challenge caches, they were absolutely completely unheard of in my area until Additional Logging Requirements were outlawed (2010 maybe?) You could say the outlawing of ALR's brought the fact that there was such a thing as challenge caches to the attention of the local community. The first challenge cache in my area literally popped up within weeks of the ALR ban.

On 2/29/2012 I wasn't looking at filling in my 366 calendar, but there was a flash mob at dawn that sounded interesting so we went. Started thinking about the 366 after that and just finished it this July.

March of 2011 was during my first year of geocaching, and I decided to tackle A Challenge of Resolve that month, a challenge cache that requires you to find exactly one cache in a calendar month. That meant that on February 29, 2012, I was starting a month of getting at least one cache every day through March in order to fill in the white line in my grid.

 

The odd thing is that 2.5 years later, I still haven't actually gone to find the challenge cache that made me want to fill in my grid.

I'm 366/366...

I purposefully started my daily caching streak on March 1, 2011 (didn't cache the day before) with the intention to make my last caching streak day Feb 29, 2012 (didn't cache the day after).

 

Longest streak: 366 unique consecutive days.

March of 2011 was during my first year of geocaching, and I decided to tackle A Challenge of Resolve that month, a challenge cache that requires you to find exactly one cache in a calendar month.

Wow, that one definitely wouldn't be allowed under the current challenge cache guidelines. It's a textbook violation of number 6:

6. One should not have to 'give up' finding other geocaches to achieve a challenge geocache's requirements. To state that "10% of your find count needs to be Attended Logs" would require the geocacher to stop finding other types of geocaches and could affect their overall enjoyment of the game.

Also "- You may log this challenge multiple times." Not against the rules, but against the grain, for sure

But, the fact that "Any previous find will be accepted" means yay! I qualify, January 2011
