GPS Handheld recommendation

Recommended Posts

You won't find a GPS that works similar to the app on a smartphone. The GPS has no cellular data plan, so you will have to load all the cache information on the device before you go out. You can't just look them up live in the field. There's a bit of a learning curve to doing that.

Once you get all the settings on the device set up like you want, install topographical maps, and download the cache info to the device, it can function somewhat similar to an app, but it will never be the same effortless experience that the app provides.

Is money a factor? If you don't mind shelling out the cash, the Garmin Montera (sp) runes Android, so you actually could run the app.

Otherwise, for something different, the Magellan Explorest line may be a fit as it would be quite a bit different than the garmin.

thank you for the info.. $$ is somewhat of an issue as I am wanting one for myself as well as for my father.. what do you know about the Garmin Etrex Legend HCX?

For you, I would suggest the Etrex 20. Much better than the Etrex 10. For your father... The Legend HCX or the Venture HC would be a good choice as both are fairly simple to use. I have used both and prefer the Venture HC.

That they don't make it anymore....

Pretty much the least expensive in the current Garmin line is the Etrex 10. No frills and no bells and whistles. Monochrome display and no SD card expansion slot. Very basic unit. May be all you need but also may leave you wanting something a little nicer. It does do paperless Geocaching, though, I think. I would recommend at least the Etrex 20.
