Can anyone give me a simple/lay-man's explanation for:

hddd.ddddd°

hddd°mm.mmm'

hddd°mm'ss.s"

I think I know that : hddd°mm.mmm'

is what the coords are written in at geocaching, but what does it mean?

And if I have coords that are:

44 07 09.24 latitude 120 58 03.7 longtitude which of the above 3 do I plug it in to?

Thanks.

What WH said is perfectly correct. To take it a step further, you can easily convert from one method of display to another. In you example you can take the 9.24 seconds and divide by 60 since there are 60 seconds to a minute and you get 0.154. If you then add that to the minutes you get 7.154. So now you have 44° 07.154' which can be easily entered into your GPSr. To convert back take the decimal portion and multiply by 60.

Questions like these are answered in the various FAQs in the pinned thread on Frequently Asked Questions.

THe coordinates you reference appaer to use Degrees minutes seconds.seconds

hddd.ddddd°

hddd°mm.mmm'

hddd°mm'ss.s"

for examply...what do all the h's stand for?

Unfortunately, it's next to impossible to locate said answer/FAQ.

That's because you're bumping a thread from 2004, when the "Help" articles used to be located here in the Forums.  Now, go to the Help Center for answers.  For example, see this article on obtaining accurate coordinates and this article about coordinate formats.

As explained in WeightMan's post from 2004, there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in a degree.  The "H" stands for "Hemisphere."  Canada is in the Northern Hemisphere for latitude and the Western Hemisphere for longitude.  Most conversions just involve the ability to multiply or divide by 60.  If you are confused by the math, or don't want to do it yourself, use an online coordinate converter like the one at boulter.com.
