Best CITO "Find"

Everyone knows that one man's trash is another man's treasure. What's the best trash you have found while geocaching that you have kept? I will get started. While looking for Logtacular in Purcellville, VA, I picked up a heavy duty tension strap (bungee cord) at the side of the road near the cache, along with some other trash.

 

What's your best find?

Swiss Army Knife, not one of the cheap one either. Nick found it so I didn't get to use it at all

Wasn't really a CITO thing, but I found a nice safety whistle once. One of the metal ones that screws apart. I found a nice plastic compass at the boat ramp after the end of a river trip too.

 

Today I actually did a CITO and found some whole glass bottles, but they weren't that old, so they weren't worth keeping :/

 

The Swiss Army knife would've been pretty sweet!

While driving to a cache I found a nice new Fiskars post hole digger in the road, and amother day I found a rubber mallet. You just have to stop and get those out the road. The post hole digger would have damaged someone's car.

At CG2EEP1 I found (cito-ed) a screwdriver with interchangable bits. Only a couple of the bits were missing, and most of the item was still in the original package.

I had originally taken the wrong choice at a fork in the path, and circled around with my phone for a gps for quite a while. I had decided to give up and head home. On the way out, I thought to take the other choice in the fork, and give this hunt one more good try. Soon enough I found the cache! Hurray!!

I pawed through the log and contents, as I always do. I love to sit and look at the things people have left or written.

I signed the log and replaced it at least as hidden as I had found it, which is a pretty clever hide. The cache is up a slight incline which is nice because this probably keeps it from some flooding. As I turned to go back to my truck, I lost my footing on this slight incline with the wet mossy grassy leafy clay-y mud underneath. Unfortunately, there was a tree nearby for me to grab at to catch my balance. I say unfortunately, since the act of grabbing for it actually put me more off balance than I had been. I hit my head on the tree, swung around twisting my arm and forcing me to let loose, then slammed my hip into the tree. Following this a shift in my weight caused me to slide down, tearing my upper arm along the bark of another tree.

When I became upright, I thought to myself: I probably need some sort of medical attention.

My second thought was to the debris near the cache. A lot of other cachers have commented on the amount of trash, but my comment will be on the content of the trash. GLASS shampoo bottles? I don't think those have been produced in my lifetime. At least not in America. There is really a very strange assortment of garbage in this area.

I was still experiencing the shock of my injuries, and not so much the pain, so I cito-ed a bit. Some for the sake of trash removal, and some for the sake of weird junk salvage. I picked up a multi-bit screw-driver with most of the pieces still in the package.

I arrived at my truck with blood dripping from my face and arm. I opened my first aid kit and cursed the contents.

I drove to the nearest drug store. There I located the bandages and first aid section. I stocked up on gauze and a cool spray bottle of saline.

There in the parking lot I sat on the bumper of my truck, dressing my wounds. All the way home I recited my multiplication tables to ensure proper brain function. I will assume my brain is as good or better than before because I hadn't formerly known my 7 X 's by heart, yet I was able to recite them. And I'm pretty sure I was correct.

At a CITO event, one of the cachers found an antique plow blade for a tractor implement. It didn't help that the area used to be a landfill and is now a park.

At one location I found a new pair of Oakley sunglasses and at another found radio controled airplane undamaged.

CITOed a huge pile of construction debris last Summer at a game lands parking lot.

Inside the mess were three unopened bundles of asphalt shingles.

Peeked inside and kept 'em. When the shed needs new, I'm off to a good start.

I have under 50 finds at the moment, and at TWO of them I've found animal skeltons. I attached photos of each to my posts. Since these caches were both in the woods and skeletons are not "trash," I left them there. In fact, one of them was at a cache placed by "Taxman," so if the skeleton represents death, Taxman's got life's two certainties, "death and taxes," pretty well covered! While walking to a cache a couple years ago, I came across a 4th generation iPod Nano just lying in the wet grass. Since there were no headphone attached I assumed it was broken and discarded. I was quite surprised when I got home to find it perfect working order (although the playlist left something to be desired). It's still working fine to this day.

The other day when i was hiking to Mondos oven Roasts , i found a 2nd stage Horseshoe whiskey Flask from the late 1890's , Put a big grin on my face and a beautiful addition to my collection.

This one time, at caching camp, I found a ported stainless Thompson Center rifle barrel. Then I made the FTF on the cache a few minutes later. Was a good stop.

This has got to be a chart topper from last weekend...

 

We're on the first of 4 back-to-back CITO events held over 2 days at 4 sites in 4 different towns. As we're walking through the brushline at the back edge of a softball field, the cacher I'm CITOing with finds a red iPod nano. It had apparently been out here for at least the winter, but on the back there was a guy's name and his phone number engraved on the case. So, out comes the cell phone and call the number. The guy's sister answers the phone and when told that we found the iPod, she says that her brother lost it 5 years ago! It was probably junk by now, but it was still pretty cool to be able to make the connection. They came down to the park to claim it, though we had to leave and get to the next CITO, so the iPod was left with the park director until the owner arrived and we missed out on the happy reunion.

Well not best, but something that has certainly made me more wary, sticking your hand under a hedge for a scrabble around and coming out with an 8" knife was certainly a surprise!
