New GPSMAP 64S

My Etrex 20 went on the fritz today so we went to REI and bought a GPSMAP 64S. I finally got the map downloaded, and transferred my PQs from the Etrex to the 64S, but my Found geocaches aren't showing up on my map. As I'm travelling, I like seeing the open treasure chest icons on the way. Is there some setting I'm missing where I'm able to see both Found and Unattempted caches? I'm sure it's something simple. Thanks in advance for your replies.

The GPX files do not contain info on whether or not you have found a cache. That is tracked separately by Garmin and if you had deleted of overwritten any of those PQs on the devicd they would have gone away also. It is very rare to have someone want to see found caches on a device since they will over time hide unfound caches. To get what you want you would probably have to download the My Finds query to a third party app like GSAK and then export them as POI files to the device.

 

Even the My Finds PQ does not have internal info that caches are found so if you just dump it into the device they will show up as unfound.

That's the funny thing - they're not showing up as unfound. They are not appearing on the map at all. So there must be something in the gpx files that are differentiating them. I know they're in the gpx files, because I don't exclude my found caches from my PQs. Anyway, I'm hoping someone out there can help me. Thanks.

I ran an experiment and the results don't make sense. Ran a PQ with nothing checked and loaded it on my Montana and those I had found showed up as found on the display. I just unzipped it and put it in straight. I don't know how they got marked as found bu tthey did display.

The GPSr includes a filter set to remove your found caches from the map.

 

I'm going off this from memory, so forgive me if I get it wrong. On the map page, press the "Menu" key. From the list of choices, there should be one for geocache filter. Select that and the current filter will be displayed. There's one section that allows you to show unfound, found, and some other category. The found category is disabled by default. Select it to toggle it to display your found caches. Press "Quit" to go back to the filter setup screen. Select the button that says to apply the filter. You should be taken back to your map and your found caches should now be displayed.

Thank you very much, Ranger Fox, that did, indeed, take care of my problem. Walts Hunting, thank you very much for your input as well. I think I may, going forward, keep the caches I've found out of my PQs. That will give room for more caches.

Yeah, you have a bunch of caches to clog up the screen and as those get archived others will appear in that area and could get covered. Not sure what layer draws last.

I've been playing around with using that filter, the one that does not show found caches. In a power run situation, it does seem preferable to remove your finds from the map. As far as cache targeting and navigation goes, it's slightly favorable for targeting in that you get to see only what's left, but unfavorable for navigation as I use the layout of caches and geometric shapes of the roads as an anchor (as well as north up) to lead into targeting. I do a lot of ad-hoc targeting and am quite good at it. So, like everything, removing found caches from the screen has its pros and cons. From a day-to-day viewpoint, I don't mind leaving the found caches off. (Ad-hoc targeting is my term for loading a bunch of caches of a maximum difficulty and terrain onto the GPSr, studying the cache layout and roads for two minutes, and being able to execute a highly efficient cache run. I tried planning them out in exquisite detail when I was new to caching, but found there wasn't much difference between my ad-hoc route and my detailed route, so quit doing what seemed like a waste of my time.)

 

I can't imagine leaving my found caches on any of the PQs I generate. It would be difficult for me to make my ad-hoc routes if I had my found caches to contend with on the screen. I can deal with them as they pile up from the current run, but not if all unarchived caches I found since epoch were on the screen at one time. I would recommend running PQs without your finds. After all, you'd rather find something you haven't yet than revisit an old find! (I still do that every now and then because I somehow miss logging something.)

Hi I have the same problem. I have tried your suggestions below and nothing seems to change. When you change the "Found" option, there isn't an option to apply the changes, by pressing 'quit' it goes back to default mode with the option not shown as enabled.

When you select just "found" (or remove "found"), you do press "quit" once (this will place you back in the filter menu), then you have to go up to the "apply" button and press "enter".

 

If you could give me the exact sequence of button presses or menus you see, that would be helpful.

Unfortunately, this is totally wrong. The Gpx file does contain that info by using a different <sym> tag. (Geocache vs. Geocache found)

All Garmin units detect the found/unfound status by the given <sym> tag.
