Buying new Garmin 64s

Recommended Posts

Greetings!

I'm buying a new Garmin 64s today and want to buy the biggest microSD card that will work with the unit. I see some units for sale in a variety of places bundled with a 32gb card. Since the huge price drops have come to the 128gb cards, I was wondering if they will work with the 64s, does anyone know? I bought one a month ago for my smart phone and would love to not have to buy another one in a matter of months because I've bought one too small to begin with. Thanks for your help!

I "think" it is 32GB. But the reality, there is little reason to have one even that large. Maps are the only large things you can put on them. Individual map sets can only be 4 GB each, so at 32 GB you are needing at least 7 different map sets that each cover a continent.

According to the forum thread here, the 64GB will work but you need to reformat it to FAT32 first.

Thanks for the link to the thread, it was very helpful! I ended up buying a 32GB card for now. I will see how quickly I fill it. I'm glad to see that I can ultimately get a 128GB card and format it with FAT32 and I'll be good to go for quite some time!

I appreciate your help!

There are limitations to the size of microSD card used, the number of downloadable maps that can be loaded and the number of detailed mapping segments that can be recognized by a device.

If at the most recent device software version, these limitations are:

◦The microSD card should be no larger than 4 gigabytes (GB)

◦Garmin mode devices with expandable memory will only support one downloadable content map per microSD card. Additional downloadable maps will overwrite any maps previously installed.

◦Each expandable memory device will be able to recognize up to 2,025 detailed mapping segments

Any map segments loaded beyond the 2,025 segment limit, even if there is more room on the microSD card, will not be recognized or displayed by the unit.

A limitarion of FAT32.

The above limits are not correct. Most if not all 32 GB mSD cards are fat 32. You can load more then 1 map and enable / disable them. That way you can have different maps for different activities. I use a 32 gigabyte microSD card with more then 1 map in both me GPSMAP 64s and my eTrex 20.
