Hello my name is Josh and a guy from work told me about Geocaching and I thought it sounded great so I decided to join. Right off the bat I ran into a few problems. When I joined I registered by selecting "Sign in with your Facebook account" apparently doing this caused problems. When I used my phone app (cgeo) to log into my account it asked for a username and password, I assumed it would be my username and password for Facebook since I never actually set up a password for this site to log in with. Well that didn't work. So when I came back home to log back in using my computer I tried signing in using the traditional method, it didn't work, so I selected "sign in using you Facebook account" and it worked. Then I thought I'd ask how to fix this on the forums, now at this point at the top of the screen it says "you are signed in as jedi1josh" well as soon as I clicked on the forum link it took me to a new screen which said I had to sign in. So I clicked sign in, put in my username and clicked on "I forgot my password" just to see if I could retrieve it by e-mail, instead it took me to a screen where I was asked to change my password by first entering my password. Now at this point I was getting frustrated and a bit discouraged and was just considering deleting my account and moving on, but my daughter really wanted me to keep trying as she wanted to join me for our first Geochaching outing. So I was stuck in a position where I didn't know what to do, and I couldn't ask anyone what to do without first signing in. Being out of ideas I decided to try in sign in once more, click on "I forgot my password" and then I entered in all three fields the exact same password I've been trying to use to log in, and viola it worked. So now that I can sign in I wanted to share this so that it's known that there may be other members who also initially signed in using a Facebook account and then gave up when running into the same problems as me.

The second issue I wanted to ask about has to do with when I was trying to sign in on my phone. Even though I wasn't able to sign in I still was able to use the app to look up nearby caches. I used the "nearby" option and it gave me a list of Geocaches with a distance to each one. I then selected the map but when I did I got a error message saying "Cgeo doesn't know the location of the cache" which confused me because it knew the distance I was from the cache, it said I was .2 miles from it, then as I got closer it said I was .1 miles, but yet it doesn't know the location? When my friend from work showed me the same app on his phone the map screen had all kinds of marks on it for each location of a cache, but I keep getting a blank map with just my location on it even thought there were at least 20 nearby caches. By the way my map did work accurately and my location was always exactly where I really was. Does anyone know what is going on here?

I don't know much about smartphone caching. I do know that I no longer use Facebook to register for websites because I've encountered problems doing so.

I agree with the post above, just start fresh and create a new account the normal way. And consider the official app. C:Geo is an unofficial app and using it is a violation of terms of use because of the way it accesses the website. And because of that it tends to break when changes are made to this site. The official app will cost you a few bucks but you don't have to worry about it breaking when the site changes.

A friend of mine, who I am mentoring, is also having trouble signing into the App (Free) after having signed up to GC.com using her Facebook credentials.

Did you use you Facebook password all three times? What log in information were you given (generically)?

Please tell them to actually create an account, rather than using Facebook. And to verify that account, by following direction on the email they will be sent. And to read the guidelines here.

A big issue is newbs using the free app, and making mistakes. And it's not that they make mistakes, it's because if they did some simple stuff like I mentioned, it would save a lot of people a lot of trouble. And I'd say verifying their accounts is important- when they do that, others will be able to email them. Maybe it's to delete a false log, or let them know they made the stop gog type. Maybe it's to give them a hint on a cache they DNF'd, or to invite them to an event they may not know about, or even an unlisted gathering of cachers.
