Geocaching App

There is a LOT more to the full (paid) app.

The Intro-app is limited in that it allows for only a few caches (three?) per daily period. Full app is unlimited.

Intro-app automatically "picks" which caches you see... full app shows all (except Premium Member-designated caches if you are not a Premium Member).

Caches shown by the Intro-app are typically "beginner-style" caches -- low difficulty/terrain ratings. You could be within 15 feet of a higher D/T rated cache, but you'll never know it's there!

I do not believe the Intro-app has function for finding multi-caches nor perhaps puzzle caches as they aren't normally considered to be "beginner" caches.

So, the answer to "is it worth it" is.... Yes!

Depends.

If you are going to only play this summer and then forget about it, then don't bother. Why spend the money if you're happy with the intro app, and aren't going to do this for long, anyway?

If you're doing to do this longer than this summer, then go for it. :)

I am new to Geocaching, but I just was wondering it I need to pay for the $10 app. Currently, I have found 5 geocaches with the free geocaching app. What is different about the $10 app? Isn it worth it to spend the money?

Thanks!

Is it worth spending the money? If you are happy with being limited to finding 3-4 beginner caches a day, probably not. If you want to hunt for more caches, or more difficult caches, then it would be. I'd say take a wait-and-see approach. You are not in a particularly cache-dense area, so if you keep on caching you will soon run out of beginner caches that are close by. Then you either start spending more than $10 on gas to get to more caches, or $10 for the full app.

Pay attention to what Bear and Ragged said:

NOTE:

If you do decide to 'upgrade' go back to the store... DON'T do it through the app - That is not an upgrade from Basic to Paid app. (As others have found out :( )

Thank you! I did eventually buy it thanks to your advice, and I am excited to use it on my next adventure!

I'm sure you'll find it worth those few bucks! Especially considering the alternative is a handheld gps device and a preium membership which together cost a few hundreds ;)

Not quite.

A handheld gps can be bought for a lot less money than you are trying to imply. It's a one-time purchase that should last quite a while, and can be used for stuff other than geocaching.

A Premium Membership is $30/year.

I don't need to spend a fortune on the latest "smart" phone, or buy apps to go geocaching. I don't need to constantly pay for data plans or whatever it is that makes these smart phones work.

I can take my gps out in the woods without fear of losing a major investment. I also don't need to fret about not having a phone signal.

You've been spending a lot of time here, posting the same thing essentially.

As for the OP, I've just discovered a helpful page in the Help Center:

I am new to geocaching, and have downloaded the intro app to my phone. It only shows me one cache close to me. Can you not search by cache id number in the intro app? I tried looking it up, and it says to go to the home screen. I only se a map, with a profile icon on the top left and a help icon on the top right. there are other traditional ones nearby. the one that is showing isn't even considered a beginner one.

I've spent the money on the fancy smartphone with its fancy apps whether I geocache or not. The geo app is $10. That's one day of Starbucks for me! Or one martini at happy hour.

My data plan is not a concern (even though I still have unlimited data, BOO-YA!). I can always, always, ALWAYS geocache offline. Easy peasy

But noneless...the data plan ***already exists*** I use my phone for more than geocaching. I use it for everything!

I don't worry about taking my iPhone out in the woods (or water) either. In fact, I do it all the time. I don't just do it all the time, it's my primary device. Sometimes I take my Garmin out when I want to post my tracks. But I haven't loaded caches on my Garmin in at least 6 months.

My last find, and last online log, was all done on my kayak, at GZ, in the water, live. No problemo.

Also...I've never "fretted" about losing cell phone connection. Never.

So, to summarize. Expensive gps vs $10 app. Sorry to say, but that's the short story here.

Also....I can offline cache, with no data plan, and NO premium membership pretty easily. Don't need the PMO to load hundreds of offline caches to my phone.

Seems pretty simple to me

I haven't met a cache yet that couldn't be found using my iPhone.

There just aren't that many caches out there for you to find. Look at the geocaching.com map on the cache page of one of your finds. If that's your "local" caching area, then it's pretty sparse.

c:geo is the best app I have used. when it gets down to point something you had better be looking around cause you are on top of it!!! the geocaching app blows. I use itto log found caches but nothing else. sadly ithe c:geo has more caches than the geocaching app does. it seems to load everything faster from new caches to updates of when it was last found.

Only in town or in an open field. c:geo is just as wonky under a canopy as other smartphone apps. I can't tell you how many times we've had problems in thick tree cover.

I know there are very few, but it shows only one and nothing along the highway either. It shows ones up the other highway, but we looked for 7 relatively closer ones using just google maps and inputting the gps coordinates because the geocaching into only showed one of the 7

guess I would have to get the paid version? it would just suck if I paid for the app and for some reason they still weren't listed. they are on the map and list on the website though. So I guess there is no search feature with the intro app? Can't search by cache id?

No search on the intro app, no.

The intro app won't show you White River Troll Cache because it's a high difficulty cache.

It won't show you Picnic Lake because it's a micro size.

It won't show you WTP because it's a multi.

Those three would show up on the full, $10 app. There are no Premium Member Only caches within 60 km of you, so all that are viewable on the website will be viewable on the full app.

that is funny. my gps, a friend of mines gps, and my phone with c:geo are spot on the same as long as my phone has a bar of signal. I have never been let down with my c:geo app. now the geocaching app isn't even in the ball park. it is normally 75ft off from any gps we are using with full signal.

That's what's weird, it only shows the Picnic Lake one, then up hwy 631 it shows mink lake and caribou. Doesn't show the ones that are labeled as beginner ones. Guess I will have to get the full version app. I've never paid for an app yet, haha. Guess it will be my first. I should test it on the Picnic Lake one first I guess to make sure it is accurate, although I couldn't find that cache. It's caretaker is checking on it this weekend.

Is c:geo a paid app as well? I search in my app store for c:geo and I don't see something called that. I see Easy Open Caching. does it have a different title? I'm on an iphone...

Edit: Nevermind... I see it's an android app...
