Lonely Caches

Hello, I hope this isn't a repetitive topic, my apologies if it is. This is the first time I have ever asked a question in a forum. What my question is is this...I live in BC, Canada and I am going to another province soon on holidays. I would like to find a bunch of the "lonely caches" in the area that I'll be visiting. Can anyone help guide me on how I could go about finding them? I don't have a GPS, I just use my iPhone.

Thank you,

JoeyVA

By this I'm guessing you mean identify caches which have gone unfound for some X amount of time?

If that's the case, I'd use hide and seek a cache. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/

You don't identify where you're going, so I'll use as an example Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan.

Panning on the Geocaching map, I find a cache in the park has these coords

N 53° 59.253 W 106° 16.859

I'd go to the Hide and Seek page, enter those coords for a center point AND a radius, say 100 miles, though you can certainly limit that radius, per your own needs.

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?t=m&lat_ns=1&lat_h=53&lat_mmss=59.253&long_ew=-1&long_h=106&long_mmss=16.859&dist=100&submit8=Search

Now rank on date Last Found, the column to the right

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?t=m&lat_ns=1&lat_h=53&lat_mmss=59.253&long_ew=-1&long_h=106&long_mmss=16.859&dist=100&submit8=Search&sortdir=asc&sort=lastfound

The new caches and events are at the top, as they've never been found, but after those are the long unfound, including a number where the FTF is still waiting.

This technique will work anywhere.

Is this for that lonely cache challenge thing?

- Where caches need be a 5km or greater distance from another?

The "lonely cache" challenges I've seen involve finding caches that haven't been logged as "found" in a certain amount of time (6 months, a year, etc).

joeyva, where are you headed? You can use the Hide & Seek page, as Isonzo Karst suggested.

Thank you for all of your replies! I'm actually heading to Prince Albert. SK but I don't have a GPS to input any coordinates, I just have an iPhone. I want to find caches that haven't been found in the last year or so. I love to drive in the country and I hope to find all the "lonely" caches that I can while I'm there. With your guidance...

Thank you,

Which phone, which app?

Help Center

Look for articles that explain how to add an additional waypoint.

From what I understand, the Intro App does not allow you to input coordinates. It's only meant to be a "teaser", to get you to the most basic caches and get you interested. Beyond that, you need to purchase the full app.

2.2. What is the difference between the Geocaching Intro app for iPhone, the Pro app, and Geocaching Premium?

The free Intro app for iPhone is an introductory app. Basic members are served up 3 recommended traditional geocaches at a time. You will also receive 3 nearby geocaches, as indicated with the green circle icon.

Geocaching Premium Membership offers the benefit of using the free Intro app to find all traditional geocaches. Premium Membership also allows you to take advantage of features like Pocket Queries, Premium Member Geocaches and Favorite Points. You can take advantage of these features on the website or the full version of the iPhone app. (Note: These features are not accessible in the Intro app.)

The full version of the iPhone app (the "Pro" app) for $9.99 is perfect for those who want to explore all geocaching has to offer with their phone. It displays all geocache types, lets you see your Pocket Queries, allows you to save geocaches to an offline list and more.

See our Feature Comparison chart for more detail.
