Confused on Coins

I have just recently gotten into Geocaching in my city. Started with my kids and mother-in-law. I have more time and my oldest as well. We went to a 101 event and had a blast!!! We are totally hooked. My son found a Geocoin and one of the guys in our group told him those are collectables and he can keep it or send it off. Well now he wants to collect as many as he can. More motivation to keep caching! So I got an email today about the newly released the 2014 HQ Logbook Geocoin. I want to get this for him for his birthday but I want to know first, does he keep it or does he have to sent it off into the world? I'm confused!

If you find a Geocoin in a cache, it is probably one that was sent off into the world. You can usually tell a gift coin (generously placed into a cache for a finder to keep) because it's new and unactivated, and would likely have some info on the cache page or in the coin's case. Try to log it (on the Trackable page form where it says "Enter the Tracking Code of the Item"), and you'll see who owns it.

If it was in a cache and is activated (you'll see the info on its page), it's not to keep, it's traveling.

If you buy a Geocoin, you don't have to place it into a cache, and if you plan to keep it at home and not let cachers log it, you don't even have "activate" it. You may consider keeping any real cool Geocoin you buy, since once placed into a cache, you'll likely never see it again -- and traveling Geocoins can be a little nerve-wracking, even if they're moving just fine. :anicute:

Ok cuz the new coin is really cool! He would love it. I will have to check out his coin tomorrow and look it up. I know who it was from. The guy left tons of them at the event. There is just so much to learn and see and do. I have my first micro coming in the mail and I also got a trackable decal for my truck. This is just so addicting!! Lol

An easy way to get the basics is to read the links at: understanding trackables

Then specific questions can be addressed here.

Geocoins and travel bugs and tags that are traveling are NOT meant to be collected. They have missions and they are to move from cache to cache. They are not items to be collected by the finder.

Welcome to geocaching and it's assorted addictions.

Any Geocoin you Purchase as "New" does not have to be activated. I own several that have never been activated. As for the HQ LogBook Geocoin, if he activates it, it has it's own Travel Tag, so that is what you would send out into the geocaching world to travel, not the actual geocoin.

Verbarge from Groundspeak on the HQ Logbook Geocoin: This set includes a companion travel tag with matching tracking code. You can send the tag out on an adventure and keep this special coin in your collection.
