Delorme PN-60 deleting files workaround

Recommended Posts

I have a Delorme PN-60. I used to be able to use "send to GPS" to download caches from geocaching to the PN-60. Recently when I do this, turn off the GPS, and at some time go back to using the GPS I found my cache files were gone.

I discovered that if I go into the "Geocaches" icon on the GPS main menu and use "send to GPS" from there the caches remain there through power off/on of the GPS. If I use waypoints and open the file they are in, they get deleted. So, it seems the file open function deletes some or all of previously downloaded cache files.

While replacing the battery cells with fully charged AA cells, make sure that the SDHC card is firmly seated and that the hinge on the SD card carrier has not popped out. If that does not fix the issue, then revisit your terminology of "send to GPS" and note any other issues in a follow-up post. Good luck.

Sounds as though you are loading the caches to the internal memory. Data loss can sometimes occur (although it shouldn't) when batteries die, or have been removed for a long period of time.

-- True too, it is a bad thing to leave batteries in the unit for an extended period of time anyway. If they should leak, no warranty repairs would be done.--

An alternative method would be to load the data to the SD card. Once on that card, any amount of time or battery changes/condition should not affect that data. It is all on the card, not internal to the unit itself.

Figured out what the problem was (based on a post on another forum). We were loading in a cache which had a smiley face in the log (GC5D88E April 6, 2015 entry). When the gpx file which contained the log was read in, this character prevented the following caches from being displayed, even though they were still in the gpx file. I deleted this character from the gpx file, reloaded it and all the caches displayed correctly.

I believe the person logging cut and pasted a smiley rather than using the code for it (bracket, colon, paren, bracket)which caused the error.

According to the Delorme PN Waypoint (Cache) Symbol pulldown menu in Topo Draw, the proper name for the smiley waypoint (cache point) in a gpx file is "Geocache Found". This name may be registered by Groundspeak and subject to a(n) EULA??
