Miaow_2000
Hello, I am extremely new to Geocaching and have just bought my first ever beginner GPS (Magellan eXplorist 110). I am attempting to send caches to my device but not having much luck. Do I need to be a premium member in order to do this? Thank you for any advice! Quote Link to comment
Miaow_2000
Well, I've gotten a little further. But I'm still not having a lot of luck. When I click the "Send to my GPS", I get the pop-up window but now I click on "Check device" ....and.....nothing happens. Edited August 21, 2014 by Miaow_2000 Quote Link to comment
+Gitchee-Gummee
You do not have to be a Premium Member to use "Send to GPS". 1] If you are doing so from the map -- don't. You need to use "Send to GPS" from the individual cache page. 2] You need Magellan Communicator. If you do not have it, download it: http://www.magellangps.com/Magellan-Communicator-for-PC (PC only) -- or this one: http://www.navmansupport.co.nz/All%20Magellan%20FAQs/Drivers/eXplorist%20Series/magcomm___805.htm (Mac or PC) 3] If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, you may well need to set the Compatibility Mode: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=457 Quote Link to comment

I'm still having no luck. I've tried Firefox, IE and Chrome and both a PC and a Mac. I've pretty much come to the conclusion either the device is faulty or the communicator is bugged somehow. I found a few discussions where people were having exactly the same problems I am (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=272238) and I've messaged them for advice. If you or anyone else has any more advice, I'd be happy to try it. Otherwise, I'd love some advice on the best beginner GPS model BESIDES Magellan Edited August 22, 2014 by Miaow_2000 Quote Link to comment

DON'T quote me! I think that the Magellan and the communicator don't work... I think I can remember reading something on the forums some time ago. +Bear and Ragged
Another option. Select loc file and save to your desktop, then copy over to your GPS. Or on a search page, click the boxes and save to your desktop. Just a thought... Is it a new Magellan? You may be eligible for a FREE trial Premium Membership. Miaow_2000
Bear and Ragged - It's not a new device, I bought it used but I can still send it back. I think you are right that Magellan and the communicator don't work anymore. I was going to try to manually move the loc file to the GPS but my computer doesn't even SEE the Magellan. Bummer! I'm going to contact the seller and see if they have any hints but I think I'm going to have to try another brand. Any recommendations for a beginner? I'm not looking to spend a lot yet but it doesn't have to be fancy. Quote Link to comment

I'm not looking to spend a lot yet but it doesn't have to be fancy. 1 Don't know about Magellan... I think there's more than one way to connect them... Got a removeable memory card in? Someone else may know. Give 'em a chance to reply. 2. Garmin.(But I'm biased! ) Do you prefer touch screen, or buttons? Want maps? Quote Link to comment
Miaow_2000
Bear and Ragged - Thank you so much for all the help. I've made some progress. I wrote to the seller and she suggested trying a different cord to sync the device. Voila! My computer sees the GPS. (I really should have thought to try that on my own ). I moved an loc file to my device and then tried one more time to transfer caches AND IT WORKED! I'm not sure what I did in which order but thank you so much! Scotty996
I also have a Magellan eXplorist 110. I downloaded Magellan Communicator onto it and after that I could download individual caches or pocket quieries into the Magellan no problem. Quote Link to comment
+popokiiti
When I had a Magellan, I had to log out of the geocaching website and back in again. Didn't work, so I restarted the computer and that did it. When you send to GPS, do you get a pop-up window? Be sure to select Magellan (I didn't at first) from the choices available. Also, in your profile (and I don't know if this matters) do you have your Magellan entered as your primary device? I have to admit that I did have issues later on with my Magellan and loading caches and now have a Garmin. Quote Link to comment
+Graculus
Pocket Queries allow you to download up to 1000 caches at a time into the Magellan. You can run up to 10 PQ's a day. Please note that to do Pocket Queries you need to be a premium member. If you want to find out about PQ's and Magellan's Vantage Point software I've written a simple to read guide on how to do this. It's on my UK resource website (link under my signature), the page on Paperless caching. +Bear and Ragged
Also, in your profile (and I don't know if this matters) do you have your Magellan entered as your primary device? Has absolutely no effect! (A lot of the newer devices aren't even listed.) Quote Link to comment
Miaow_2000
Thank you all so much for the help. I am now able to send the caches to my Magellan GPS. A faulty cord was the problem. Now if I could just find those elusive caches! (Can't blame a faulty cord for that) One more piece of advice I could use is how to interpret coordinates. I understand the "N- xx degrees" part but what is the xx.xxxxx part after that? I know I am in the right location by my north and west coordinates but how do I use that second part of the coordinate? They never seem to change much when I am in the area of a cache. Edited August 26, 2014 by Miaow_2000 Quote Link to comment

You shouldn't have to "interpret" or figure out anything....just hit "navigate" and follow the arrow the the spot. What are you doing, exactly? Sounds like you may be having some trouble understanding how the GPS works.... Quote Link to comment
Miaow_2000
popokiiti - I am always thrilled to meet another cat lover! I see on your profile it says your location is "The Cat House". Is that the name of your house or where you work? In New England, we tend to name our houses so mine is Hairball Hollow. =^..^= Chief301 - I am having some trouble understanding how GPS works! I've been doing some reading but I must be missing something quite simple. Take this cache for example: (http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC11GPQ_welcome-to-fremont) at the top of the page it says, " N 41° 26.171 W 096° 26.827". When I am physically at the lake, my GPS does say N 41 and W 96 but what is the 26.171 and the 26.827 in the description?? My GPS will read N 41.44333 degrees/W 96.3323 degrees and the sig figs after the decimal never seem to change very much as I walk around the one mile lake. Edit: OH! It's degrees, minutes and seconds! A horrible part of my undergrad math career I have tried to block out. Goes to show you should never say, "Now WHEN will I ever use this again"?
