Etrex Vista Tracks to Google Earth

Recommended Posts

Hopefully someone can help me with this....

I want to get a "Saved Track" from my Vista HCx into Google Earth.

I can see the track under "Saved Tracks" section. I cleared the active track because forgot to turn it off and it tracked all the back to home.

When I attempt to import tracks into Google Earth it appears to only import the active track (that is nothing).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

This isn't obviously geocaching related, so it's on thin ice here...

Earth (via GPSBabel) reads the active track. Since eTrex damages tracks when saving them (http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/garmin/xseries/gvistahcx/tracks.html) that's a reasonable default. The saved tracks are just GPX files that you can drag and drop from your mounted storage device into Earth for display.

The track will be missing times, altitude, resolution, per http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/garmin/xseries/gvistahcx/tracks.html#types - that's why you really want to never manually save tracks and take the steps in "preserve them" on that same page.

It's geocaching related for me! Any time I'm geocaching in a large preserve, I save my tracks for future use. They indicate where the trails are. Or if I went cross-country, which way I went. Depending on the circumstances, I may want to repeat - or avoid - that path again. LOL It's very useful to have that when I go back, especially when the map does not show the trails.

Anyway, I can access every track in BaseCamp, and from there it's easy to select a track or multiple tracks and select Export to GPX or Export to KML. In the View menu, I can tell it to view the selected tracks in Google Earth and it automatically transfers them into GE without having to export/import.

I'm not sure if the Vista is compatible with BaseCamp, though.
