Garmin 64st missing Hints?

Recommended Posts

I have used my Garmin 64st for several months now. I have not been able to locate the cache Hint.

I use GSAK default to load the gpx file into my GPS.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are the hints in fact appearing in the GPX files? If not, it may be an issue with GSAK. Within the GPX file, do a text search for "hints", to find a line something like "<Groundspeak:encoded_hints>Look Low</Groundspeak:encoded_hints>". Each cache will have the "Groundspeak:encoded_hints" tag, but of course not all have a hint.

You didn't say how familiar you are with how a Garmin GPSr typically displays hints. You must first select a cache, then click "GO". At that point, cache info including the hint is available.

What happens when you select "Show Hint" in the screen shown at 2:26 in this video?

Did you accidentally populate GSAK with loc files or similar (api load - format: light)? Loc files (as downloaded from a PQ preview) do not contain hints.

Load real Gpx files into GSAK and you will see the hints.

To the Garmin: you will only see the hints when you have a GoTo to the cache in question. You will not see the hint from just opening the cache from the list view.

[...] I view the map to get to the cache rather then trying to follow that crazy arrow.[...]

You can watch the map even whilst you're on a GoTo. That's not a mutual exclusion.

Map View with a current GoTo (the magenta line):

The advantage with the geocaching dashboard on top of the map view is:

Instant access to cache description, hint, spoiler images, log section (field notes creation) without leaving the navigation to the cache.

I could handle that. How do I set that up?

That's the "Geocaching Dashboard". It's pretty cool! You can pull it down or stow the currently selected dashboard by tapping the little arrow icon at the bottom of the dashboard.

But be sure to remember that the compass in the Geocaching dashboard always points to a Geocache. That is the current Geocache being navigated to, or if "Go To" has not been selected, it points to the nearest Geocache. So if you're instead navigating to a waypoint and not navigating to a Geocache, remember that the Geocaching Dashboard's compass arrow always points to a Geocache.

Thanks to both of you. I got it all set up.

To display the hints, you have to be actively navigating to the cache. Hit Go and then the Menu button to find the hint option.
