Geocaching Favorites

xLZ1T.png

Geocaching Favorites is a simple way to track and share the caches that you enjoyed the most. For every 10 caches that you have found, you will be able to Favorite 1 exceptional cache in your find history. The Favorites accumulated by a cache are displayed in search results and on the cache page so everyone can see which caches stand above the rest.

Premium Members can earn and spend Favorite Points, and sort search results by the most Favorited caches within a radius of your search. Basic Members also benefit by seeing how many Favorites a cache has earned in search results and on the individual cache pages.

Visit your profile to see how many Favorite Points you have accumulated, or the Knowledge Base to learn more about Favorites.

Let us know how we can improve Geocaching Favorites on the feedback site!

Geocaching Maps Beta

Give it a test drive!

Take one look and this new map speaks for itself. The fundamental engineering of the maps has been completely revamped to utilize a tiling system that generates and stores map tile images on the fly. Once an area has been generated the data is cached briefly so subsequent visits to that area appear almost instantaneously. No more waiting, and no more 500 cache limit!

A5kfO.png

This first implementation is only the beginning. Once we see how the map tile engine is working under load we can set a baseline and begin adding additional functionality such as smilies, filtering, PQs and more. This is the first of several consecutive upgrades to occur each month through March, so keep checking back.

Geocaching Statistics

View yours!

What was your biggest caching day of all time? Geocaching Statistics lets you visualize your geocaching activity in different ways, and serves as a checklist of challenges to tackle in the process of becoming a well-rounded geocacher.

dgeuA.png

In the past, adding detailed statistics to your public profile required jumping through hoops, and once generated needed continuous updating by hand to keep them up-to-date. By hooking directly into our database of geocache finds we are able to provide you with continuously updated statistics with no effort on your part.

As with the Maps Beta, Geocaching Statistics is a multi-phase project. We plan to add many more and varied types of statistics such as country maps and milestones in the next release.

Site is broken. Maybe it's just broken for non-members?

coord.info no longer works (all queries end up at Directory not found)

After about five page views, I ended up at the "A Brief Intermission" page, indicating that the site doesn't think I'm human. That page requires you to wait 60 seconds for a captcha to appear. After entering the captcha, it apparently takes me to a 500 error, and then I end up at the Intermission page for another 60 seconds! The second time I entered the captcha, it just redirected me back to the Intermission page a third time. So, now I guess I'm locked out. I can still get to the forums [].

I'm experiencing the same problem, right from the time I started searching for caches after I logged in.

Working for me right now. New Map is pretty neat. I do like that since its still in beta you have the choice to use it. Old Google maps still work.

When the site first came back the throttling code was misbehaving, but we jumped on top of it. Are you still locked out? Coord.info is also back up. Thanks.

Stats page looks nice. Look forward to more being rolled out in the future.

Favorites is a nice implementation of rating caches.

I wonder if the Favorites shows a way to implement FTF as a stat? A similiar way to marking a cache as one of your favorites could be used for marking it as a FTF. To prevent abuse of the feature, a user marking FTF will generate a request to the CO to confirm the FTF. Then FTFs will be listed under your Statistics page.

Milestones could work even more similiar to Favorites. Cache finds don't always get logged in strict order and occasionally reasonable backlogging of cache finds occurs so Milestones can't be done automatically. So for every 100 finds a cacher has, give them a Milestone (the same way for every 10 finds a cacher gets a Favorite). Then cachers can mark a cache a a Milestone the same way they mark it as a Favorite.

I had to leave the page and return, then it worked.

I am now noticing that the T/D icons aren't showing on the old map bubbles. Edit: They are now working.

I'm liking the statistics thus far. If the formatting could be improved just a tiny bit on them I would love them even more. Some of the charts are difficult to read, especially the d/t chart. Spacing out the left column things on the horizontal bar charts so they roughly go with the bar they represent would be great too.

Stats Page

Not keen on the distance being displayed on the closest to home. Over a period of time if you find other close caches someone could plot where I live.

Only the distance is displayed for users viewing your stats, not the GC ID.

I agree with this as well.

So no one misses this, I'll repeat: Only you can see the cache ID of your nearest and farthest finds. No one else can. Test this by viewing another user's stats tab.

Oh yes I see that now, sorry.

Thanks for the updates and Happy Holidays (or Merry Christmas as we say) to all the Lackeys.

To respond to a question on the previous thread, about the too-wide (for me) forums, I am using

SeaMonkey 2.0.8 and SeaMonkey 2.0.10 (different computers) on Windows XP Pro SP3.

The forums are adjustable width only in that they can be wider than my normal browser window, they can take up 3/4 of the screen, or after that they expand to hog all the width you allow.

I estimate that the minimum width to view this text box is 920 pixels.

New maps and statistics look good.

One complaint: On the log confirmation page, the reminder for how many finds I need until I earn another favorite vote is annoying. They should be moved below the log entry text. I have so many finds, that I don't care how many more I need to get another favorite vote... I'm never going to use all the ones I've accumulated so far.

Edit- Feedback'd

I like it!

One glitch I noticed: I keep trying to add GC2EEND as a favorite, but it doesn't "stick". (Add to Favorites then reload, or Add to Favorites, then view the list.) A couple of other caches I tried worked fine.

EDIT: after about five tries - including a detour to fave another cache and back - finally it "stuck".

is there currently a problem with creating the pocket query for ones own finds? I can click on the button, the form gets reloaded and indicates that the query is scheduled. Yet nothing happens. Reloading the form after some time shows no sign of the scheduled query, the button is still enabled. After ten minutes still no sign of the query. Is this broken?

This is what happens to me every time I attempt to download my 1000 cache PQs, the site insists I'm not human

So statistics are for paying members only? Why didn't you say so?

Are the maps also only for monied members?

Not exactly. Basic Members have access to some statistics, but the majority are available to PMs.

Ah, thanks. I'll bet it's getting hammered. When I'm on my public profile, though, and choose the statistics tab, it tells me that I have to buy a premium membership to see anything. (Can't get there right now to give you the exact quote either, 503 error.)

On the beta map, is this just a fixed demo to show how it will look? No caches appear when I go to a different zip code. The caches that do show up on the beta, I cannot figure out how to identify them.

I'm viewing one of my favorite caches. I click the "Add to your Favorites" link. The number of favorites goes up by one, and the link changes to "Remove from your Favorites". So far, so good. However...

I click on the "n Favorites" link and get

Service Unavailable

HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

I go back to the cache page and the number of favorites is back to its original value, and the link says "Add to your Favorites" again. I refresh the page and get

Service Unavailable

HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

On my stats page there is a full link to the closest cache I found, including the distance.

This is the only thing I had removed from my previously generated cache stats page. Could we remove the 'closest found' altogether?

Are there any options coming for the stats page?

Love it, Like it was said before you guys ROCK !!!!!!!

One thought.

Could there be a check-box to just not show the distance of the closest cache to your Home Coords?

Many get puzzles fake coords right on our house so when they found them it is easy to figure out where certain cachers live. Some people would want that kept unknown, but would still like the great STAT page.

Thanks again and again and again.......................

I think that should be made clear on that page, probably right next to where you display the GC ID.

(Otherwise you are going to get this question over and over.)

Yep, that is apparent! We will hotfix a little message there.

Is something wrong with the statistics (already)? I keep getting "Geocaching statistics are not available at this time."

The database is getting hammered while it generates so many statistics, so we took it offline briefly. We have a fix in progress.

Statistics are back online, and throttling is under control again.

Also fixed:

Bullets in "Search Options" on /my/

Missing state for France (Alsace)

Working on:

Adding a message to the Home Location portion of the stats page to clarify privacy issue
