What to do What to do

I have owned and use a Magellan Gold GPS for many years. On a recent trip to Northern Ontario, white water canoeing, the batteries were in need of replacing. I have done this many times over the years. This time when I turned the GPS back on ALL of my stored and labeled waypoints were erased and gone. (I have always carried a detailed maps and a good compass in the bush for this reason.) Now, the unit will not even turn on. I now own a paper weight that looks like a GPS. As I look at all the new hand held GPS's that are now available I am at a complete loss as to what to get. Magellan-Garmin...??????? What I think I want is a GPS that will provide me with simple maps, a unit that will be compatible with my Apple computer so I can down load and upload information, will allow me to edit my way points, can have a lanyard attached, is waterproof, and semi-rugged. I do not need a camera, something that will give me best fishing days or anything fancy. I am also interested in reasonably priced unit.

You might want to consider a Garmin GSPMap78, especially if you are into watersports such as white water canoeing. It's waterproof and it floats! For boaters and watersports enthusiasts who want to run with the best, the rugged GPSMAP 78 features crisp color mapping, high-sensitivity receiver, new molded rubber side grips, plus a microSD™ card slot for loading additional maps. There are lots of free maps that you can use with it like OpenStreetMaps and maps from GPSFileDepot such as Ibycus Canada Topo and you can pick one up at GPSCity for $199.95 plus $4.99 shipping out of Alberta. It comes with a 10.5" lanyard as well.

As a long time Meridian user I can say the unit most like you're Gold is the Garmin 62S.....has the same keypad and quad antenna and has a 3 axis compass your Gold didn't have and is paperless, etc. They have been selling for $200.

Re you're Gold its not unusual for one to die after being jostled. Open the unit by removing the small allen head screws and gently separate the two halves. On the inside you'll see the copper " fingers " that make contact with the inside of the battery compartment....gently bend these so more pressure will be applied when you close the case.
