+Coach88
I recently re-installed Windows 8 on my Laptop. Before doing so, I backed up my garmin files. Seeing I had the setup.exe file in one of the folders, I thought I was ok. I could dig around to find my CD's but they could be anywhere. I think I installed before without them but this time, it's telling me it can't find certain files. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. If you need more info... ask away :-) Quote Link to comment

jholly
This might simplify things for you >>> http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 That is just a patch file, not the full program. Mapsource was not available as a download like base camp. It came with the map products. There was a way to snarf it with a tutorial program but I forget the details. Besides that program is probably not around anymore. I think the procedure use to be documented on gpsfilesdepot. Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
jholly - The link I provided is for both. Look carefully. The patch file is that little 2.2MB bit. The entire app is obtained using 57.05MB v6.16.3 updater download. For that updater exe to succeed, however, it will require that a previous version load shows up somewhere in the registry. With any luck, he's been able to get far enough through that process with what he had that the updater will overlay whatever he's already got. Certainly worth a try. If it doesn't fly, a minor registry tweak will set it all right again such that the v6.16.3 download will complete. If need be, the OP should send me an email about that and I'll take care of it for him. Quote Link to comment
+splashy
If you install Basecamp first you can install Mapsource without any problems. Basecamp is better anyway. Quote Link to comment
+Coach88
Thanks, I'll give it a shot and let you know what worked for me... Quote Link to comment
+Coach88
The installation didn't pick up on the previous one :-( As I mentioned before, when I run the setup file, it hits a wall when it looks for specific files. I do have a file named "Disk 1". Is it possible that it's looking for files in that folder? If so, how can I get it to look there? it doesn't give me a browse option. I seem to recall it working the last time I updated my PC by running the setup file from a specific folder or somewhere... Quote Link to comment
+Coach88
Not sure if this would make a difference or not... The files that I have are on my external drive. Should I copy them somewhere on the Hard drive before running setup? Quote Link to comment
+splashy
Did Basecamp install right? If not Mapsource won't install. Mapsource from an internal sounds better, Mapsource is from the pre external era, not sure if it will instal from an external drive. Besides that, Mapsource has enough problems of it's own.. +Mr Kaswa
The Mapsource linked above just installed onto my machine after a windows reinstall and no other Garmin mapping products on it. Suppose there could be some remnant somewhere though. Wasn't there some trick about renaming the mapsource6163.exe to .rar, extracting the files, and then using the .msi to install it? +ecanderson
No, no trick needed. Evidently your registry still showed the presence of Mapsource from a prior installation. What the heck. Use the download specified earlier. Here's the registry information. It's not exactly a huge secret. Save it as a text file as something.reg and execute it. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products] "InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files\\Garmin\\" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\Applications\MapSource] "InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files\\Garmin\\MapSource\\MapSource.exe" Edited August 18, 2014 by ecanderson Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
The above assumes that you install stuff to the folders indicated. Edited August 18, 2014 by ecanderson Quote Link to comment

+Coach88
Here's what I did... I copied the 4 lines as suggested, saved it as a .reg file. I opened the registry editor (regedit) and clicked file, import and selected the file I just created. At first it gave me a message about restoring the key on top of key "Computer" and replacing everything under it... yikes! so I created one that was named Garmin and tried to import it. I got the following error message: "Cannot import C:\Users\***.reg the specified file is not a registry file. You can only import a registry file." Quote Link to comment
+Coach88
Progress report... I installed basecamp from the Garmin Webpage. Then I was able to install Mapsource using the link provided by ecanderson. Now, i'll try to get my maps in there somehow Quote Link to comment
+Coach88
As previously stated, when I try to install my map products (CanadaTOPO and US Topo) I keep getting an error message that it can't find a "source file". It specifies the path where it should be and when I look, it's there. Why can't it find it? Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
First, double clicking on a *.reg file will add it to the registry automatically. Never do this unless you're dead sure of the content of the *.reg, though. There are a few out there designed to hurt you. In this case, you can see exactly what's in it since you're creating it yourself from the text above. The addition (or replacement) is specific to the 'path' identified in the content of the *.reg. It doesn't disturb anything else in the registry. Now ... the original question was about loading Mapsource, not associated maps. That's another can of worms entirely. I don't consider helping someone re-install Mapsource (which Garmin claims to be obsolete anyway) an issue, but installing maps without the discs is another story. It can be done, but it's a chocolately mess to accomplish since Garmin takes a rather different approach to installation with *.exe files. Quote Link to comment

I realized that once Mapsource was installed but I still had to get the Maps in there. In my world, I saw the whole thing as Mapsource since that's how it was packaged when I bought it a number of years (and PC's/Laptops/OS's ago). I'll do some digging around the house and i'm sure i'll come upon my TOPO Canada Maps. TOPO USA... they could be harder to find but I can do without. Thanks for trying anyway :-) Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
Depending upon which of the topo maps you owned before, you may find that some of the alternatives are better. The 24K topos from Garmin are pretty good, and they are routable. The 100K topos .. not so good, and not routable. So while I wouldn't discourage you from digging to find those CDs, you may find some good alternatives are available. If that's of interest, let us know what areas are of most interest to you and we can point you to other sources. Quote Link to comment
+Coach88
I found my CD's for TOPO Canada but there's a twist... only 3 of 4 CD's. I'm installing now, I guess i'll find out soon enough if it'll work. My main interest is Maps that I can load onto my Garmin 60CX and use them as I did my TOPO Canada. Street maps and not an absolute since I can route cities not problems with my phone. They're still nice to load on a GPS if you're in the woods and don't require the clutter of elevation lines... any suggestions is appreciated :-) Quote Link to comment

+Coach88
First experience with Openstreetmaps... I'll play around with that for a bit. thanks Quote Link to comment
+ecanderson
When you go to download your requested map from OSM, you'll need the executable (*.exe). Running that will install the map on your machine. Then that map will appear as an option in Mapsource and you will use Mapsource to select the individual tiles that you want to fit onto your 60CX and actually send them to the device.
