64s GGZ caches from GarminExport macro

I've searched here and the GSAK forum with no luck. Sorry if this has been discussed and I missed it.

I have a new 64s running v.4.00 and all is well. I recently found the GSAK macro GarminExport to send a large file of caches in GGZ format. The macro worked great. When I boot up all the caches are listed and display perfectly. If I shut my 64s off and re-boot No caches are listed. This repeatedly happens if I repeat those steps.

Now, when I move the same exported GGZ file (having changed nothing else) from internal memory to the card GGZ folder and boot up, all caches are there again. Shut off and re-boot- No caches again. I can repeat the moving of the GGZ file between internal and card and they show, but upon shut down and re-boot they do not.

Anyone have any ideas?

No clue. I have a 64S, use that macro and have no problems. I'm guessing it is a Garmin issue and not a GSAK one.

FYI, you do not need the macro to send GGZ. The normal "send to GPS" will send in GGZ format by default if you have the 64S chosen as a model.

This is a well known issue but usually not continously repeatable. The recommended fix is to always install geocaches on the SDCard. That way in the future when it happens 10 miles out on a bike ride (has happened to me) you shut down, remove card, boot, shut down, insert card, reboot.

If you call Garmin their first response will be you got the file from GSAK so the problem is there the device is fine.

So go to their site and download a large GGZ file of caches, install it and see if the same thing happens.

A follow up. I bought this 64s from GPSCity a month ago (for $239) and only this weekend opened the box and loaded it up.

Upon further testing I now see that ANY cache file (single gpx, PQ gpx, etc) will behave this way- to appear first boot, then Not upon the next boot. After trying everything I could think of, I have to conclude I have a faulty unit and will see if GPSCity will replace it.

First clear out ALL GPX files and restart and possibly even a hard reset. Then try again with a good, well known file. Sometimes a bad file can cause ongoing problems. Do you still have the pre-loaded GGZ file on the unit? If so, try renaming it, so it does not load.

Got it working! Thanks Red90 and Walt!

Walt- I was well versed in the odd behavior with my 62s and missing caches and long ago learned the steps you outlined, and have adopted the loading of caches on the card some time ago. That has saved me more than once in the field!

Red90- I was about to give up but tried your suggestion of clearing out of all gpx files. Then a hard re-set, then I took it a step or two further when that didn't clear things up. I set it back to factory defaults and removed ALL my custom map .imgs, Custom Map .kmz files, OSM street maps, and GPSFileDepot topo maps.

Another hard re-set and loading a PQ of caches in .gpx format and it worked! So I tried loading a large cache .ggz file and it worked!

I then slowly added a mapset one at a time with it still working, then added my custom .kmz map files one at a time until I found the one .kmz that gave me all this grief.

Thanks again for the suggestions and incentive to work thru my problem! You guys and this Forum are so valuable and helpful!
