sanfairyanne
After some scumbag broke into my car and stole my beautiful (I really loved it) Garmin 60csx I've got to replace it and I've got the chance to get my hands on a Garmin Monterra. I just wondered what people thought of it. I feel it would be great to have access to Andoid apps for weather and certain other apps applicable to photographers. I'm concerned though, this is a new avenue for Garmin, how is it being received, are there many operating issues, for instance can I use it with the latest Yosemite operating system on my Mac. I understand that Apps are kept on the internal memory rather than the expandable micro sd card. How limiting is this, am I going to put two or three apps on the unit and fill it up? Can anyone think of a reason why I should steer clear of this GPS. If so please let me know. Quote Link to comment

sanfairyanne
Scott thanks I read that info, one of the most irritating issues for me seems to be the poor battery life. However it's hard to know when people say they only get 3 or 4 hours do they mean that time on the lithium battery or the regular batteries - my guess is the lithium - and therefore it should be possible to use the regular batteries as a back up. It's still a very pathetic time. I'm hearing people quoting low times even with all their apps turned off. Quote Link to comment
+BAMBOOZLE
For $200-$250 you can still find the 62S....I also came from the 60 CSX ( still have it ) but like the 62S much more. The 64 series is the latest but is still pricey and from what I read still may have some bugs in the firmware. Quote Link to comment
+geodarts
I feel it would be great to have access to Andoid apps for weather and certain other apps applicable to photographers. I wonder how well a photo app would work given the low screen resolution on the Monterra. Quote Link to comment

Or one that gives sunrise sunset times. I'm sure that would be fairly simple. Quote Link to comment

While there may be many reasons to get a Monterra, both my 62s and Oregon 600 will show sunrise/sunset and the position on the sky. Edited October 26, 2014 by geodarts Quote Link to comment

Yeah I hear you but it's not showing the position to the degree which is important for a pedantic photographer like me. For instance if you wanted to know precisely when the sun might set along the length of a city street you couldn't accurately use the 62 series or the Oregon 600. Don't get me wrong they're both awesome GPS units. I had a 60csx which I loved to bits, I praise that GPS to anyone who cares to listen but all the same it cannot do everything. Quote Link to comment
