Those of you involved with Geograph may have seen the layer for Google Earth that plotted density of photographs submitted as a 3D bar chart.

Well I thought the same technique would be interesting to try on some other data, so made a layer:
UK Geocache Density (113kb KMZ file - opens in Google Earth)
That plot's the number of caches in 10km x 10km blocks as bars on the Google Globe. (see the screenshot from the geograph version)

Unfortunately this isn't that exciting as no areas have particularly high density of caches, so created a variation that plots the number of logs to caches within each square:
UK Geocache Log Density (120kb KMZ file) - this is more interesting.


Possibly of interest is the same again for TrigpointingUK
UK Trig Pillar Density (145kb KMZ file)
Trig Log Density (149kb KMZ file)

Can also get the density for any of the layers in the nearby.org.uk location search, see the list here, and even more here , see the last column and click 'Bars'.

P.S. These are one-off compiles using the current G:UK/T:UK/nearby databases, if there is interest can create a fresh version at a later date.

It certainly highlights the areas that dont have any caches.

Should help me plan a few caching trips now that we've finished the extension at home



BTW people, don't forget to play with the "Tilt Adjust" slider, plan view doesn't show much

Edit to say that the cache log density makes quite interesting viewing

Good, point about using Tilt, forgot to mention that! Another tip is to select the 'Bars' layer in My Places and move the Transparancy slider at the bottom of said box.

Another variation, this time showing the number of cachers (ever) active in the given square (on current caches - will see about extending it to cover archived caches):

Interesting that London, the north of England and Edinburgh have high numbers yet the Midlands seems fairly quiet, probably due to the lack of any major cache "hot spots"
