I was framed, yet I didn't commit a crime, and the person who framed me committed no crime. How is this possible?

An umbrella.

A cacher starts out for a 5/5 cache on top of a mountain. He arrives at the summit cache at 8PM and camps out there. The next morning he uses BackTrac and follows the exact same route back down, though he takes breaks at different times. He arrives where he started at 8PM.

Does he or does he not pass some spot along the path at the exact same time as the previous day? Prove your answer.

Edit: removing starting times; that part doesn't affect the answer

Yes he does.

Assume that he sets out from the top and another person sets out from the bottom at the same time (this meets the timing mentioned). When they pass on the trail, they will have been walking the same amount of time and be in the same place.

Correct!
Further, the starting time doesn't matter. If the guy coming up starts at 6AM and the guy coming down sprints down starting at 7:59PM, since we know they finish at the same time, we know they still pass somewhere on the trail at some time.

ETA: I just noticed from your answer that I may not have been clear that I meant "the same time of day", not the same time into the hike. Still the answer is correct.

OK, before you do this one in writing, try it in your head (be honest now). Only give yourself 2 minutes to provide an answer.

How many times does the number "9" appear between 0 and 100?

0, 1 or 19 depending on what you mean by "9" appear.

Let me be more specific then (it wasn't this hard when the question was asked to me).

How many times will the digit 9 appear when counting from 1 to 100?

Writing it out is cheating. 2 minute time limit still applies.

Once you take your guess, then write it out, you might be surprised. Or not.

By the way, the reason for my previous answer was if it's a trick question an you want to know how many times the number 9 shows up between the words "1 to 100" then the answer would be 0.

If you mean the number 9 and not just the digit, the number 9 shows up 1 time between 1 and 100.

However, since you clarified and when you consider 99 has the digit 9 in it twice, the the answer is 20.

I just excavated this topic because someone gave me this neat little puzzle recently and I thought that it would be a good one of you OTers.

When/if you get the answer please post it, but please don't give away the solution of how you worked it out. I'll let it run for a few days so everyone gets a chance to have a go.

I know this was answered already, but this can also be proven graphically. Consider the graph below:

Posted Image

The Y axis represents points along the trail, no matter how many. It's the path you take from the bottom to the top. The X-axis represents time. Since we know each day ended at 8pm, the blue dot represents your position on day 1 at 8pm. Likewise, the red dot is your position on day 2 at 8pm. The blue and red solid lines represent possible ways you could have ascended or descended, respectively. No matter how you arrange the red or blue lines, every red line will intersect every blue line. The points where they intersect are the points where you will be in the same place at the same time on both days. Note, you can start the red line or blue line ANYWHERE along the horizontal dotted line and this will still be true, which proves the Edit above about the start time not mattering.

Monty Hall always gives his contestants a choice of three prizes that are unknown, and each concealed behind a seperate door. One is a grand prize, and the other two are booby prizes, and the contestant knows this.
After they pick the prize behind door number 1, 2, or 3, he shows them the booby prize behind one of the two doors they did not pick. Then he gives them the option to choose to keep their original selection, or to pick the last remaining door.
If you are the contestant, what should you do? Does it matter? What are the chances the prize is behind the door you first picked, and what are the chances the prize is behind the remaining door you didn’t pick?

Well let's see. The first pick is a 1 in 3 chance of being correct, so it is less than 50/50 chance of being right.

the second pick is a 50/50 chance of being right, and I have heard it said that at this point you should change, because the odds are now improved, and there was only a 1 in 3 chance of the previous pick being right and now the chances are better, so go for the other one (that you have not seen). I am not convinced though.

See, Monty knows which door has the big prize. So he's not just picking one at random. That makes a big difference in how the math works out.

You've picked a door at random. There's a 1 in 3 chance you are right. Which means there is a 2 in three chance that you are wrong.

So there's a 2 in 3 chance that the big prize is behind one of the doors you didn't pick. Monty now eliminates one of the choices. So there is a 1 in 3 chance that you have already picked the right door, and a 2 in 3 chance that the prize is behind the remaining door.

You should switch.

This is a most unusual paragraph. How quickly can you find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so ordinary you'd think nothing was wrong with it - and in fact, nothing is wrong with it. It is unusual though. Why? Study it, think about it, and you may find out. Try to do it without coaching. If you work at it for a bit it will dawn on you. So jump to it and try your skill at figuring it out. Good luck - don't blow your cool!

I'd give it a failing grade, but then that may just ruin the whole thing...
eagerly expecting elaboration.

The oddity is true of the paragraph itself, but is not true of the entire post.

Correct! My signature is not included in the riddle...

Bad dog!

A black dog stands in the middle of an intersecton in a town painted black. None of the street lights are working due to a power failure caused by a storm. A car with two broken headlights drives towards the dog but turns in time to avoid hitting him. How could the driver have seen the dog in time?
