Although the Wherigo Player is installed by default on the Garmin Colorado, we currently support various flavors of GPS-enabled Pocket PC devices. If you have a device that works feel free to list it below. If you have a device that doesn't work, feel free to start a topic about it. That will help others sort out their own workarounds or installation solutions for the Wherigo Player. It will also help us here at Groundspeak investigate and solve any issues occuring with certain devices.

We also use GeoFrameworks to handle GPS functionality on Pocket PC devices, so it is helpful to look up your device in their forums if you have trouble. There may be a solution lurking there.

I've got the player running on a Verizon XV6700 using a Delorme BT-20 GPS.

I needed to stop my running programs and clear my Internet temp files, plus on the initial startup connect my GPS before launching the player, before it would work. But I got it working and ran the tutorial about an hour before the meet & greet.

I got it running on a Mobile Crossing Waypoint 200 with a BT-GPS. I had to make sure the GPS was up and running first before starting the Wherigo Player, otherwise it would lock up. Other than that, it seems to work great!

My Garmin M4 works but you have to make sure to extend the antenna to start the GPS before running the application. Otherwise the Player gets an error.

How about a winXp notebook with a usb GPS? I see tha the test setup is for WinXp, and with the UMPC's and the small panasonic CF18 win pcs... might be the perfect setup, they support sound, etc and have a big display.

It's working very nicely on an iPAQ 110/111 Classic (624 MHz PXA310) with a DeLorme BT-20 GPS via BlueTooth running Windows Mobile 6 Classic build 18120.0.4.0.

OK. All the computer techies out there can go ahead and laugh and get it over with. I have NO IT background but am very fascinated by the whereigo aspect. I read over comments on devices and have found a iPaq 5915 at a good price. I have it and have figured out how to sync to it. (hey, that was a chore for me!) And now I am trying to find out how to download the player to it. I would really like to schedule a phone conversation, if possible, where some one could walk me through it. What tends to happen with written explanations is I may not understand some of the terms used by more experienced people. I am willing to try though.

I don't think it's that complicated to do, so let's try for this approach:

First, download the player and save it to your desktop.
Connect your iPaq to the computer and wait for half a minute. That should give the computer time to notice the device is connected and load what it needs to load.
Next, look in "My Computer". Does your iPaq show up under there? It should.
Double-click on your iPaq device and you should see some files and folders come up. Drag the player install program into this window and it will copy to your iPaq.
Unhook the device and wait for it to finish whatever it needs to.
On your iPaq, go to "Start" (the Windows logo) and select "Programs". Go to "File Explorer". At this point, you'll have to find the installation file. See the list of files and folders? See that shaded bar right above it? Tap the left side of that shaded bar and choose "My Device" from the menu. This will take you to the root folder, the one you should have copied the installation file to.
Click on the file, select yes to allow it to install, and that's all you have to do.

Alternatively, if you can copy directly to, say, an SD or Compact Flash card (whatever small removable card can fit into your PDA), you could copy the installation program directly to that. In "File Explorer", instead of clicking "My Device", you should be able to select "SD Card" or "CF Card" from the bottom of the list and find it that way.

I can be more specific if you need and so can others. Just tell us what part trips you up.

There is one problem that might come up. You need the .Net Compact Framework v2 to be installed. I don't know if you have it. To check, on your PDA, go to "Start", "Settings", click on the "System" tab at the bottom, find the option "Remove Programs" and tap it. Look for "Microsoft .Net CF 2.0" in the list (it's not in alphabetical order). If you don't have it, there's another step you must take before you install the player. Reply to the post and I'll give you some instructions on installing that. I'll be going off memory on that one, but it should be easy to do since you have already synched your PDA (in short, download the .Net Compact Framework redistributable from the "get it now" link on the same Wherigo page that lets you download the player, run the program on your computer, sync your PDA, and look to your PDA's screen to allow the installation).

As I said, for further explanation, just tell me what part you'll need a better explanation and I'll start from there. Everyone here will get you up and running in no time.

First of all: Thank you for such detailed information in terms that I can understand.

Second: I figured out how to get the download from my computer to the second computer. I got whereigo on there and it told me I needed the updated item. I downloaded that and when I try to use it it says: there is no application associated with "netcfsetupv2". Run the application first, then open this file from within the application.

OK. I did this BEFORE I read your note. Do I need to uninstall everything? I checked in systems and the only thing it has there is the where I go player.

I will be patient this time and wait for your response. I'm afraid my haste has probably caused more problems. Should be fixable, but still . . . .

I also increased the sd card to a 2gb. So space should be OK now.

Yes, you will need to install the .Net Compact Framework (CF) v2 before anything else. I'm surprised to read you have the player installed without it.

Before you install the .Net CF, please uninstall the Wherigo player. After that, install the .Net CF, then the Wherigo player.

Word of caution: After you install the player, do not delete the installation file. Leave it alone. You will need this to uninstall the player properly (which you should do before installing a new player version). It's odd that this happens with Windows Mobile: you shouldn't need it, but you will.

If you have any more questions, just type them in the thread. I monitor the forum constantly from 9-5 EST, then sporadically during the night.

OK. I have deleted the wherigo and the net.compact update. I still have the wherigo install on there. What do I do now. I just deleted these items. Nothing else.

Did you remove them from the "Remove Programs" window or did you just delete the installation files?

Once the programs have been removed from the "Remove Programs" window on your PDA (which should mean the programs have been uninstalled, but some problems could come up here; I'll skip over them until needed), run the .Net CF v2 install program on your computer, then sync your PDA and let it install, confirming the instructions on the PDA along the way. After that, find the Wherigo player install file on your PDA, click on it, and confirm you want to install Wherigo. That should do it.

sorry for delay. I've been in bed with that gut-wrenching-pain-stomache virus. Nasty little bug.

\I just deleted them. The only thing that was in the "Remove Programs" window was the Wherigo. I did "remove" that. But, the PlayerInstall button is still in the program files. Do I need to delete that as well? You had mentioned needing it for the uninstall process.

I hope you're feeling better today.

I'm not sure what you mean by the player install "button". When you click on that, does it try to install the player or try to run the player like it was already installed? Just because some programs are not listed in the "remove programs" section any more does not mean they have been uninstalled.

If it tries to install the player, tell it not to (if it tries to run the player, I'm not certain what to do beyond taking a guess--remember the funky thing I mentioned about the "remove programs" list). After that, try installing the .Net CF, then the player and let's see what happens.

I'm so terribly lost and confused. I downloaded the net. cf v2. Placed it in the ipaq folder in 'my docs'. The computer converted it for pocket pcs. Then I plugged in and synced. When I try to click on netcf setupv2 in ipaq it says: There is no application associated with netcfseupv2. Run the application first then open this file from within the application.

Do I not need to open this? Do I need to download the wherigo now and try to open that?

Its ok. You've got a good and patience teacher helping you out.

Just remember we all had to go though puzzling this out before we got it working.

You're doing fine. Ranger will help you through it.

Thanx. OK. Where do I go now? I told you I was not a techie. I reread some of your notes. Was I supposed to run the download on my computer before I put it in the ipaq folder to download???

The way I remember it, is you plug your ipaq in and let it sync. Then, from your computer, double click on the net cf EXE file. It opens on your computer and it will install the file on your ipaq.

You may need to click some buttons on the ipaq during the installation - just follow the screen questions.

OK. I have done that part. What next. Do I need the redistribute download before the wherigo? How do I know if I got this right? I think it must be in there because it shows on the 'remove program' screen. Looking more promising now.

Yeah! Cool!

Okay, the good news is once you've installed Net CF, you get to leave it alone. It's not really a program, so you don't need to worry about opening or closing it. It just does it's own thing.

Now, simply cause I wasn't really following earlier. I know you installed PlayerInstall.CAB and then uninstalled it. But it's still showing.

Is it listed under the Remove Programs option under Settings?
Yes? Remove Program.
No? Cool.

Is it listed under File Explorer under the folder you saved it to?
Yes? Leave it.
No? Copy the PlayerInstall.CAB from your computer to your ipaq.
Confused? :D Let us know.

Okay, what we'll do is reinstall the Player now that Net CF is installed.

Go into File Explorer and find the PlayerInstall.CAB file.
Click on that.
The installation screen should come up just like it did for the Net CF. Just follow the questions on the screen.

Once that's done, you should see the Wherigo logo listed under your Programs. If it's not, then we need to work out what happened.

Let us know when you get this far and what happens.

OMG!!!!!! You are a GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I could have NEVER done this on my own. NEVER!

Once we were on the same page you were able to give me exact instructions on how to get started. When I attempted to start the wherigo it told me bluetooth was not turned on. But, when I hit OK and went back to it it came right up. Gave me the option to choose a game. Which I did. I'm in the house and did not continue but it seems to be working. It did say satellite reception was not optimal.

ANything else I need to know? I saw some posts that said you needed to start the gps first? I'm not sure that I can minimize it on this one. So, not sure if that is applicable. It's dark and cold outside, but I think I'm going to bundle up and see if I still get the same message.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

SnraChavez of Los Traviesos.

Yes. You two have been absolutely wonderful. I did go out and try it last night. It worked great. I'm very excited. I tried to download 2 other games, however, and they are not pulling up in the play list. I think I am doing the same thing as before. I downloaded them to the folder on my desktop. Sync. They are both located in the same folder as the tutorial game but when I pull up the wherigo program it only has the tutorial listed. I tried the 'reload cartridge list' option in the menu, but alas, it did not resolve the problem. Any help here?

OK. I think I have it. I was just saving it in the main folder and not in the Groundspeak/wherigo/cartridges folder.

I tried to run Whereigo, once again, on my iPAQ 3850. I have the cf.net 2.0 installed.

I'm using a GPS bluetooth on com port 8. This GPS bluetooth is recognized by all other apps I'm using.

Can anyone point me out a solution? Thanks in advance.

There are a lot of things people are finding out you can do to fix this. One solution was to take the GPSr off shared mode.

This thread has some other solutions. Try browsing around and trying things out.

I too would like to see this work for the 60csx model.

Or just the 60Cx....

I have a nice ruggedized CF71 laptop that I'd use with it. In fact I already use it with GSAK to load caches to the garmin in the field or on trips.

To answer your question directly, no, there is not currently a way to connect a laptop to a GARMIN GPSmap 60CSx and use it with Wherigo. There isn't a player application for that. As for when/if a player application will be available, I'll leave it to the Groundspeak group to answer that or abstain.

I mentioned that in the previous post, I thought, and provided a suggestion for the next best thing.

Looks like it's working fine on my Eten x500+, which indicates it should work on all models of Eten PDA's, as they all have very nearly the same brain :D The only issue I have encountered is the lack of VGA support, however I would still call it readable, only the bottom third of each line of text is cut off... Eten seems to do better with VGA compatability issues than most. PDA's they make which should be supported are:
G500
x500
x500+ (VGA)
m700 (QWERTY)
x800 (VGA)

I got it working on my iPAQ 4150 (Windows Mobile 2003) using the Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS receiver.

I also had it working on my Treo 700WX phone (Windows Mobile 5) with the same Garmin Mobile 10, but it would seem that the player is not ready to be used on square screens quite yet as I could not see the bottom portion of the screen and there was no scroll bar.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on tis thread.
I downloaded whereigo onto my miop550 and when trying to run it get "This application (player.exe) requires a newer version of the Microsoft.NET Compact Framework than the version installed on this device.
though when i look into the remove programs it isn't there to remove. I have managed to find a newer version and downloaded it to my PC i have run it on my pc and syncronised my mio but it still says the same message. I am running windows vista on my pc if that makes any difference any help greatly apprieciated

If there's an answer to this, it'll be in the Installing .Net Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package, If You Have .NET 2.0 SP1 Installed (WIN2000) thread. This one is more for Groundspeak supporting devices.
