I have tried every way imaginable, even so far as SSHing into the iPhone and deleting every aspect of the original App. Is there anywhere I can get the old version until this gets fixed?

On a Mac, old iPhone/touch applications are moved to the Trash. If you want to the old version back, drag the old version out of the Trash. Locate the currently installed version in the "Mobile Applications" folder (right click on the application icon in iTunes and choose "Show in Finder"). Drag this file to the Trash. Quit iTunes (just to be sure). Move the recovered application file to the "Mobile Applications" folder and double click it to reopen iTunes. Now... it should load the old application version.

The process should quite be similar on a Windows machine.

This didn't work due to the fact that I no longer have 1.0 from all the times I tried to delete, then install fresh.
I am able to now download it to my Mac in iTunes, but when I check mark to sync Apps' it SAYS it's on my iPhone, but it's not.

Other apps download and install just fine.

Yeah, this app is totally broken now.

I also tried letting iTunes on the computer install the 1.1 version onto the iPhone, with no previous version on the iPhone, and it still doesn't work.

As for getting 1.0 back, iTunes put the old version in the Recycle Bin (I'm using Windows), so I just restored it out of there, deleted the new version, right-clicked on the app, and selected "Get info". It then prompted me to find the "missing" file. I selected the (restored) 1.0 file, and then iTunes put the working version back on my iPhone.

Any chance of getting the .ipa file?

I updated this morning and everything worked perfectly for me. I have an all Mac work and playflow if that matters.

Elric77 and Muero,

I sent you both an email.

I don't actually have the ability to create the files they build in the store (which can be vexing). I can, however, send Ad Hoc versions to troubleshoot the issue.

In dealing with some of these issues I discovered a common theme - many applications are crashing on jailbroken iPhones. If you do *not* have a jailbroken iPhone and you are having issues, please send me an email through the site. Please be honest (and I won't tell anyone!)

The likely issue (other than jailbroken iPhones) is Apple's use of DRM since it seems to happen in very specific cases. I have recommended everything in this article except for the "full restore" option.

It it were me, I'd make a spare copy of the app that works and put it somewhere safe. Then, I would do the update and see what happens. I would not be surprised if it works. I have seen stranger things. All I can attribute the anomaly to is a stray subatomic particle coming from the heavens and hitting your iPhone at exactly the wrong nanosecond.

And, if it does not work, it will at least give some notion of what might be going wrong.

I waited for this new version to get it. Absolutely fantastic. Now I need to find out one more thing. I lost the thread this was posted in and I do not know just what to do.

I need gc.com to send me a text message when a new listing is posted and an email. I can't figure out how or what to do to set up the text message.

Once I get that I will really be set all the time even if I don't have my GPS with me. Fantastic.

Thanks for the very useful update. I've given it a real quick look, and things seem to be working very well.

Can't wait for a convenient way to log a cache from this app. That would be FANTASTIC!

The next thing I'd like is to have the coordinates displayed on the navigation screen.

Thanks again for the nice update!

I Restored to "unjailbroken mode", and it works. I will jailbreak again when I have a spare minute to see if it STAYS working, I will post my results.

I also have a jailbroke 2.2 iPhone that is not working with the update. Although I am afraid that Groundspeak may not be able to (or care to) fix the issue. I mean why would they go out of there way to fix the application when there is nothing really wrong with it? I will be either using 1.0 of the application, or trying to fix the .ipa. I paid for the app though and hope to see 1.1 working on our phones soon.

Not sure how much they can do. Looks like quite a few apps crash on jailbroken phones, so there is some fundamental "problem" with the phone itself (well, Apple wouldn't say it's a problem of course!)

I thought I'd wait until the few bugs/annoyances were fixed.
I'll now download the GC application ready for use at the weekend. :)
Thanks (in advance)

I have been using the application since it was first release and enjoy the convenience.

I would like to suggest a useful optional setting would be to have the Navigate screen indicate Bearing To the cache (either magnetic or true). This would allow me to pull out my trusty magnetic compass and follow it to the cache when near ground zero. Having the display in Cardinal Points ( N, NE, S, SE etc.) is not very useful.

My distances are in metric. Thank you. I assume that it picks that up from my login?

Add me to the list of the App breaking after upgrading to 1.1 with a jailbroken phone..

Any way I can get 1.0 loaded back on my phone?

If you are having problems with the updated version crashing right after starting you might want to try, if you haven't already, re-installing the app from the phone. Do this without syncing.

Its pretty easy to do. Just hold your finger on the app icon until it starts to wiggle and there is an X. Click the X and delete the app.

Then go back into the app store, again on the iPhone, and re-buy the app. It won't actually purchase it. It will tell you it knows you already purchased it and then it will offer to re-download it.

This worked for me. It might work for you.

I've tested on a 'pure' phone and on a jailbroken phone and in both cases this worked.

I captured what data I could from the crash and sent that in. Hopefully it will be of some help. It seems to have something to do with how the app is installed when its sync'ed from the computer.

Oh yeah. I think that if you do have a Jailbroken phone and you are using Winterboard that might be contributing to the issue. The animation of the icons quickly sliding in from the side in the lower icon bar might be what is crashing the app when its running on a jailbroken phone that has Winterboard running.

All of this is just a guess though. I've been doing my own iPhone development so I was able to plug in my iPhone and capture console and crash logs and try it with and without the phone being jailbroken. I can only do so much though because I don't have the project code, and of course I wouldn't expect them to give me that stuff.

I' love to see a numeric bearing to the cache on the navigate screen. I typically travel with a compass in the car, and a bearing readout would be faster than waiting for the location refresh.

I made a note of this in the store description. Hopefully it helps folks. We also nailed down the issue with some installs and will release a hotfix that also fixes the ampersand login issues some users are having.

I had the same issue with the application self-closing on a jailbroken iPhone.

Uninstalled winterboard and a few other apps, tried some of the suggestions on other websites but no luck.

Restored to factory settings and reinstalled only the geocaching app which launched successfully.

Installed all the rest of my apps and it's still working.

Keep me posted if you have any success on jailbroken phones.

Is there a way to save a waypoint if I want to place a cache and don't have my GPSR with me? If yes, how accurite will it be?

Installed the update without any problems - thanx for the feature to login and hide found caches.
Still missing: Log Caches online within the application.

One question - how can I delete saved caches?

I uninstalled winterboard, updated to geocaching 1.1 then reinstalled winterboard and everything works great.

Any additional steps you took? I uninstalled winterboard, and also geocaching and reinstalled it, but no matter what the app keeps crashing. Till I get it I just reinstalled geocaching 1.0.

WHAT ABOUT FIXING THE SITE SO THAT A REGULAR SMARTPHONE CAN USE IT AGAIN?!?
The 'site upgrades' of last June have rendered my smartphone (TREO 680) nearly useless for accessing the site.
While I applaud the new IPhone app, it is really annoying that the plight of regular smartphone users appears to be being ignored, while this IPhone BS is being promoted.
Is grrroundspeak in bed with apple?

My Treo 650 worked fine after the upgrade in June. I remember some people complaining about the upgrade, but I didn't see a problem with it (I use the iphone now though.)

Click on the cache listing and click the delete button. It is in the same location as the save button.

I made a temporary fix to allow those users with ampersands to log into the iPhone application. Please let me know if other characters cause issues.

I also submitted a new version to the store to fix the crashing issues with any non-jailbroken devices.

On the jailbroken phones, Winterboard is pretty well known now to cause issues with the geocaching application. There may be other Apple unauthorized applications that can cause problems.

So what are you saying? Are you not going to develop the app and test on jailbroken phones prior to release?

Cuz that's a lot of users... and pretty short sighted from a development standpoint.

Edited to add: I just had success with uninstall Winterboard & Geocaching, reboot (hold Home button and Power over 10 seconds til the screen abruptly flashes, if you don't have a reboot app), reinstall Geocaching, run once to check operation, reinstall Winterboard, run twice to check operation. Beats full restore anyday of the week (I hate restoring this device! Takes forever.....)

Also....in case I have your ear Jeremy, with the advent of data connected GPS enabled handheld devices, I would think a policy change on data access by applications would be in order. Something the developer licenses from you and hard codes into their app. Goodness all around. Unless you guys are enjoying be app developers? [:anibad:]

I for one hope Groundspeak gives making their app "jailbreak-friendly" very low priority. People who have chosen to hack their phones in a way that isn't supported by Apple take their chances. Bad enough this thread got hijacked. I'd rather see Groundspeak focus on addition of new features, such as logging finds (as field notes, and with coord.info/textmark connection, please!), and ensuring stability for people whose iPhones Apple still supports.

Seriously? You hack your iPhone OS to run rogue software, and then complain that a program doesn't work? What if I hacked my iPhone to run Linux, and then complained that this app doesn't work on it?

Even if he did want to spend lots of time making sure every single item on Cydia and Installer plays well with this app, I doubt he wants to waste money on a second iPhone just to be able to jailbreak and test it.

Yep. Test it on jailbroken phones. Serve the WHOLE community. All the other big apps are.

Ummmm...Ever heard of "adhoc" distribution? You know where it's sent out to people to "beta" test?

I pay for my hacking with instability. Case in point, i'm running Intellisync. It pretty much requires a daily reboot. Kinda like Windows mobile! Having done handhelds for many years now, I know how to diagnose and eliminate ill tempered apps. Why should I be punished for installing programs on MY phone?

It's not "rogue software". Apple has seriously missed the boat on many aspects of the OS. I choose to jailbreak. I'm a big boy, if I brick it, I'll save my pennies and buy a new one.

What's with all the Apple lockstep? I thought they were the cool free thinker type of company? Remember the Benetar looking chick throwing the sledgehammer into the giant 1984 screen? Where'd that go?

Again. "Adhoc" it out. Make sure it works ACROSS the board. If there is a major unfixable conflict, note it on the change log in the update. Yep, I read those...

App not working for me either. The "update" notes had no mention of not upgrading if jailbroken at the time of my upgrade. app just crashes appears to have nothing to do with winterboard as the notes now state as I uninstalled winterboard and still this app crashed at launch. Give me the old version or give me my money back please k thanks

I am in the same boat, although there are ways of switching back to version 1.0 if you are jailbroke, but I will not discus it here. Although your "Give me the old version or give me my money back" attitude seems child-like. You (along with me, and anyone else) jailbroke our phones knowing the risks, and this is just one of them. Like I said earlier, I doubt Groundspeak will fix it either, because it is not broken. It works fine on non-jailbroke phones.

Installed the update without any problems - thanx for the feature to login and hide found caches.
Still missing: Log Caches online within the application.

One question - how can I delete saved caches?

Greetings from Germany

Peter

Click on the cache listing and click the delete button. It is in the same location as the save button.

Uups - that was too easy - thank you Jeremy! :anibad:

Cheers Peter

I made a temporary fix to allow those users with ampersands to log into the iPhone application. Please let me know if other characters cause issues.

I also submitted a new version to the store to fix the crashing issues with any non-jailbroken devices.

On the jailbroken phones, Winterboard is pretty well known now to cause issues with the geocaching application. There may be other Apple unauthorized applications that can cause problems.

Speaking as one of those pesky ampersand users, the temp fix didn't work. :anibad:

I did some experimenting seems its not winterboard itself but MobileSubstrate which winterboard installs but some other apps use to add features to the phone UI on removing Winterboard and MobileSubstrate the geocaching app is working again.

Hope this helps

What's with all the Apple lockstep? I thought they were the cool free thinker type of company? Remember the Benetar looking chick throwing the sledgehammer into the giant 1984 screen? Where'd that go?

Good question.

I really like the concept of the iPhone, but going with only one carrier was the primary deal killer for me. Shot themselves in the foot with that one. Kind of like if they had only allowed iPods to play music bought from the iTunes store.

I guess their marketing gurus did a study and determined the bottom line was better served by serving fewer customers.

I was also wondering if MobileSubstrate could be the culprit, until I uninstalled Winterboard, left MobileSubstrate 0.9.2587-1 installed, and was then able to install and use Geocaching 1.1. I figured I would uninstall things one at a time and then try to get Geocaching 1.1 to work, to try to pin down a problem. Although, it appears that just uninstalling Winterboard is not working for everyone, so it's still a bit of a mystery.

Nice update. Lot of things fixed, but it would be great to be able to zoom (and double tap) in and out of the "Description" which gets to wide when there's a large image.

Thank you for the update. How do we remove MobileSubstrate? Just SSH into the phone? If so, where?

installed latest version on a jailbreaked iphone 3g 2.1 a week ago and it works fine for me! (did not upgrade from 1.0) I donīt have any "jailbreak"-programs installed. Only need the jailbreak to use a different carrier. I really hope it wonīt crash for me at the next update....

I really like the program! Only missing logging or a quicklink to the loggingpage in safari.
Used it today for 2 caches in my city. Itīs a great camouflage with your earphones plugged in walking around with a Iphone looking busy when there is mugglers around...

Looking forward for updates! (if they donīt crash on my jailbreaked phone of course... )

Possible bug in 1.1:

When tapping map when looking at a cache screen Google maps opens and a pin is dropped at the cache location. The problem is, for me anyway, that the pin does not get the waypoint name (as I thing it did in 1.0, I think) but the nearest town name. So when I try to get directions from my current location to the cache Google maps directs me to the name (address) that the pin has. For me that is for the most part the town name and thus completely useless as it directs me to a location no where near the cache.

Am I doing something wrong or is the above correct?

i just bought an iphone and downloaded the geocaching app.

do i have to have to have wi-fi for this to work right?

i can pick a cache and get to a map but then i don't get proper directions. it keeps taking me to the downtown area of the city instaed of to the location of the cache.

we are going nuts. missing something.
