Have seen some folks talking about adding witness posts to marks without any.

 

Is it legal to buy them yourself and put them there? Or does it have to be done with the blessing of the govt?

Well it would all depend on weather the property was privately owned. If so I would ask permission before you did that but no you can buy them but be very carefully pounding them into the ground/ All kinds of buried utilities etc. I would be very cautious as to where and when I would set a witness post. Sometimes its better that none exist as it calls unnecessary attention to the marks. But by all means set one if you think is will help preserve the mark but don;'t go driving one in on the Court House lawn etc.

 

Those plastic one are pricey, the local Menard's Home Supply has 6 ft metal post for $1.99 each and you can but a driver for less than $20.

Yesterday I saw that Home Depot has glow-color survey flags about 2 inches square attached to 20-inch steel wires. They cost $6 for 100.

 

I wouldn't use them around here in the suburbs except possibly in a couple very lonely little segments of land that have turned back to forest with heavy underbrush and will likely stay that way.

 

In remote areas they might be useful in specialized cases like a Scaled location in fairly thick underbrush.

 

For most Adjusted locations, they'd probably be more nuisance than useful. For these especially, I'd recommend cutting the wire length to half or less first to make them more discreet and probably last longer.
