Not quite sure what you mean. Many people use metal detectors to hunt for benchmarks, I think it is even a standard piece of equipment for surveyors. Using a benchmark to do metal detecting sounds more like you are wondering if benchmarks make good tests for metal detectors. It would depend upon the metal detector and the benchmark. There are many benchmark varieties that would not show up on a metal detector, scribed marks, "stones" etc. This is not to say that benchmark medalions would be particulary difficult to find with a metal detector. However some metal detectors would treat the metal of some benchmarks as background metal and will not report it as a find. That said, I occasionally use a metal detector when searching for benchmarks in places where they may be overgrown, or covered with several inches of dirt.
