It looks like the Other Site is now going to bribe cachers to come to events to promote OC.com. I'm glad that there are very few users of that site in my area, but I'd hate to see fun events become ... I dunno. Politicized.

The sooner the other site folds, the better.

You mean the Cpt's site is promoting OC.com now? That's the only other site a sane person would be visiting.

I wonder if Cav Scout and Ashnikes will sign up to be Opencaching Ambassadors (who will be given enough swag to give away to be rock stars at the events!!)

I agree. People who went to Opencaching in a huff are in for a shock. It has a framework, but needs a whole lot of work. It's no substitute for Geocaching.com. And if you think GC's Android App has problems, don't get me started about OC's App.

OH NO! We aren't gonna go there! Just because the other one is other than sane doesn't mean you aren't also other than sane.

It is significant that the longest thread on the OC forums is titled "Banned by Groundspeak."

To be fair, they did just clarify that they only plan to do it if the event organizer requests it.

Let's just hope people don't get carried away... I still think it's really weird.

I actually wandered over there and read that thread.
Interesting insight I guess. Although I had thought I'd seen MPH over here recently.

MPH hasn't been banned to the best of my knowledge. And he is bi-siteual.

Merp?!? (that is my text attempt that the noise a cat makes when a bird is close to the window but doesn't seem interested enough to try and catch the bird- since that is how I feel about the situation).

'pends on the angle. :) MPH evidently has not grasped the meaning of the purple crayon metaphor.

Well if you have one square angle all other angles must be acute!

Nope. Oftentimes when something posted makes no logical sense on the Dark Side, I'll throw in a purple crayon image, just as equally out of nowhere. So him telling me there is no purple crayon means that I'm making sense. :)

Has nothing to do with the book, except maybe subconsciously.

The bit I liked was, "We'll also outfit you in OpenCaching.com garb to identify you as an Opie expert..."

How can anyone resist the opportunity to get dressed up as a blue squirrel? ;)

I get the mental picture of a StarWars fan showing up as a Wookie to a StarTrek convention on the level of faux pas that the situation above would cause.

The book (which I had never heard of before today, being an Old Fart) does make perfect sense for the metaphor, though. Harold has the power to create a world of his own simply by drawing it.

1st time I've seen this site. I requested caches near my home town and came across one. It is there and also it is here. Same cache. Is that allowed?

1st time I've seen this site. I requested caches near my home town and came across one. It is there and also it is here. Same cache. Is that allowed?

It's called cross-listing.
The other site would not exist without crosslisted caches. 99.99% of the caches listed there are crosslisted. It's basically an outdated mirror site.

A friend who's into geocaching stats posted this on my facebook earlier this evening (re. Opie's site)

"There are just over 700 unique caches worldwide on that site. The others are all cross-listed, including several which were turned down by Geocaching.com."

It doesn't seem to have much take-up here in UK as yet.

So far OC competing with Groundspeak is like me building cars in my garage to compete with GM, at best I'd have to be a GM Dealer on the side so I'd have a product to sell.

They'll never compete because the seem to think it's about just putting up a listing site. Groundspeak was serendipity defined... The right people with the right ideas and skills found each other at the right time. I don't see anything like that happening over there.

I cross-listed one of my caches, mainly so I could test the OC Android App. It's currently the only opencaching cache in the area. It's an easy ammo box hide. Due probably to the horrible opencaching App, the only opencache seekers who came, ended up in the private property behind the park. The App has a compass that points in the wrong direction (on certain newer Droids such as mine, and the official Geocaching App does the same). But to make things much worse, Opencaching has zero communication ability -- I can't contact a cacher to provide a hint. And these cachers were new, and subject to "new cacher" learning curve (like did they turn off "street routing"? Who knows).

I was immediately tempted to remove my one OC cache and never look back.

Seems OC is attracting the Entitlement crowd. Reading that thread I see post after post bragging about all the free stuff Garmin gives them, it's all about ME. More Garmin pushes OC the more customers they drive away, all that's left6 for them are the leeches.

I think I still have one of Castle Mischief's Alabama caches listed there as my own. Don't tell their reviewers.

Wait a minute...

they are planning to crash Groundspeak-listed events with their OC crap, given out by a person in a blue shirt?

It boggles the mind how pathetic that is.

Well, their claim is that they are only going to do this at events they have been invited to.

This is a very good point, so let me clarify. We have heard from many event organizers who have requested OpenCaching.com support of their events. OpenCaching.com and the OpenCaching.com Ambassadors and will work with the event organizers to find out what kind of presences, give-a-ways, promotion, and Q&A is appropriate for each event. We have no interest in having OpenCaching.com Ambassadors attend events where they aren't welcome, or having them promote the site in a way that isn't appropriate at that specific event.

Sure, they "say" that.

But MPH recounts the reality:

I'm interested in this program, but I have many questions about this site myself. I have already attended one GC event wearing a OC hat with OC SWAG and a Garmin Chirp and Opie pathtags that I handed out. I can tell your that most knew what the chirp was, but only 1 of 30 knew about this geocaching site. Many of them I have meet in the three States that I normally cache. I use the forums on these geocaching sites, but most other cachers that I have spoke with seldom use the forums. I found out about this site in the forums on GC.

Oh, my bad, that was before he became an Official BlueSquirrel Attache.

Yeah, I guess oc has been leeching off of GC for publicity since the beginning.

If I ever attend an GS-listed event and someone tried to pawn off some oc crap on me....oh, that would not be a pleasant encounter.

Even if the event organizer had requested the OC presence? Groundspeak does not own the events, they just list them.

I don't get the level of hate exhibited by some of us over this competing site.

I don't "hate" the oc site. I can't "hate" something that isn't sentient.

I just don't like swimming with leeches.

No, I don't. I don't particularly like it but don't hate it. By "us" I meant those of us here in the GC.com forums.

I will say that I have seen at least as much disdain for all things Groundspeak over there. Even with their cache import policy.

The whole thing is pointlessly and needlessly ugly.
