Same issue, caching over the new year with 4.5.9 after a while it slowed the entire phone to a complete crawl, everything went back to normal when I closed the geocaching app.

Found with Geocache v4.5.9 that if I turn off location service for the Geocaching app. It will run without freezing up. I will turn on the GPS to locate some caches, then turn it off to research them, pick one then select go find it, then turn on location services and it will work but is VERY SLOW. Hope this helps, and is not redundant info.

Iphone 4
Version 4.2.10

I purchased the app last week and have found it extremely slow and the UI very jerky to the point of it being largely unusable and i've gone back to using the free version which works fine and reliably in it's more limited way.

I'm running IOS 5.0.1 on an iPhone 4 and v4.5.9 of the product.

I just tried what Jackrabbit suggested here and found that switching off location services completely fixes the slow jerking UI for me.

I'm very unhappy, having spent £7 on the app, that it's so poor! As said this is a fresh installation and otherwise the apps on my phone work fine, including GPS-related ones.

Please hurry and fix this!

12 caches in so far, 1 tonight, 6 yesterday evening and 5 last week. All running the jailbroken iPhone 4, ios 5.01 and the latest and greatest geocaching app with Springtomize enabled. Not a single issue. I ran all 6 last night with the app open continuously, only used 21% battery and not once did I have the usual keyboard lag, lack of blue dot, black screen of demise or any other issue.

I searched 2 earlier today with springtomize disabled and on the second one the keyboard lag happened and, in those 2 I used 16% battery.

I don't know how or why, but ever since I jailbroke and installed springtomize I have not had the decreased performance issues with the only exception being in tests where I disable springtomize.

Recap - Stock iphone 4 with ios 5.01 and the newest geoApp = decreased performance, keyboard lag and massive battery consumption

- Jailbroken iphone 4 with iOS 5.01 and the newest geoApp = decreased performance, keyboard lag and massive battery consumption

- Jailbroken iphone 4 with iOS 5.01 with Springtomize enabled and the newest geoApp = no performance issues, lessened battery drain and zero keyboard lag

I am not endorsing jailbreaking, nor the app I used, but I am wondering why, with that particular app enabled, most all of the issues go away. Seems peculiar, but I have proven it time and again. Really odd...

I initially started this thread and although the issues with this app continue to plague me its nice to see that I'm "not the only one" and that other cachers have posted their findings in detail. I went caching a couple of days ago and used the app. for nothing but reading the cache listing details. After two caches the app seized up completly. I closed the app. and shut down my I-phone 4. I then did another 7 caches before having it freeze up again. Again I was using the latest software and app.
It would be nice to have an update from the developers of the app. or from someone else in the know on the status or potential fix for these issues.
Thankyou

Our next release plugs up a number of memory leaks in the app. This effort was a significant focus during development of this version. We are hoping that this helps solve this ongoing issue.

Very good news! Two questions though... When can we expect the next release? And, I don't really want to venture into marking words but I wish that "We are hoping..." should not be taken literately. Don't release it until you KNOW you sorted the serious bugs without introducing new once in the process. Please! :)

Version 4.6 is in review with Apple as we speak.

If we waited for each release to be perfect before releasing, there would never be any updates at all. :)

Version 4.6 is now available in the app store. Please let us know if you still see performance degradation.

Will we be seeing any release notes for this version? I don't see any yet.

Ok... been using the new version for a few weeks now. I think the issue has gotten a lot better but I still find I have to kill and restart the app every 5 caches or so because it becomes sluggish. It is not horrible/unusable the way it was but it still degrades over time. Anyone else agree with my observations?

Which iPhone are you using? (phone, App version and iOS....)

Observations were made primarily with iPhone 4 and 5.0, app 4.6 off course. I have an iPhone 4s as well and I upgraded to iOS 5.1 the other day but no conclusions drawn with those (yet).

I have had zero problems with the new version of the app, including a 39-find day without the need for a restart.

Are you running any always-on apps in the background?

I was having similar issues after upgrading the iOS to 5.1 it was so bad, on my iPhone 4 that I gave up and downgraded the iOS to 5.0.1
Ever since the downgrade I have had ZERO issue. Here's the caveat... I jail broke my phone and am able to disable multi-tasking. If I leave multitasking on, the app will still get sluggish. Not as bad as it did before they fixed it, but enough to annoy me. If I shut off multitasking, the app performs flawlessly!

I'm not sure how you shut off multitasking, but mine is definitely on as I sometimes go back and forth between the camera, my iGCT app, messaging, emails and FB while caching...

It is only possible with a jailbroken phone, to the best of my knowledge

I am using 4.6.0 and in the middle Of a search the screen goes black. I cannot use any buttons. I hit the sleep button and the apple screen comes on. I have to
Reboot my phone. It keeps doing it no matter how many times I reboot. I have a 3GS and my os is 5.1. This happens with wifi or 3G.
My on line (green) is on. Do not know how to go off line.

Ouch. Black screen, then the apple logo is not a good thing. Makes my heart sink deeply when I see it happen.

I'll start by saying hopefully you've backed up your phone recently. I've had my 3GS do this right before it died a pathetic death. I was able to resuscitate it, but not after loing 5 gig of data, including irreplaceable photos :(
Thank God for iCloud now.

Anyhow...sounds like an issue with your phone as opposed to the app. As buggy as the app was back on my 3GS, it never went black mid-navigation, and caused a reboot of my phone.

What's your battery at when this happens? Does this ever happen when you are recharging your phone?

You can turn your green button to red by turning data off under your settings. But what we are talking about (usually) is that we will be on wifi, or full 4g with full bars, in wide open spaces and randomly our button will be red (offline).
