I am VERY new to this...like day 1. But my daughter and I went and found our first cache already and there were THREE trackers in it! We left them all and didn't log anything but should I grab all three and move them all? Or is it discouraged for all three of them to travel together? Probably doesn't make much of a difference...but I have browsed through the forums here and don't want to make a mistake by moving them all at once...

Move as many as you would like.

If you don't take them, you should (write the number) and "discover" them online, stating something akin to what cache you saw them in.

They are not considered as SWAG, so the "trade up/trade even" concept does not apply.

EDIT to add: I did not mean that you should write the number online (NEVER do that)... you do however, need the number to log a "discover".

Hello - welcome :)

You can take all three travel bugs if you want to move them along. It's allowed.

But

If possible, try and find out whether they have any special missions before you place them into the next cache - If a TB has nearly reached its destination you wouldn't want to retrieve it from the cache... and then later realise you've moved it 100 miles the wrong way! :D

They don't all have special missions, some are just out there to travel everywhere and anywhere. Sometimes they will have a mission statement attached to them so that you can immediately read where they want to go.

As soon as you retrieve any trackable (a travel bug or a geocoin) from a cache make a note of the tracking number on it. If you have any problems logging it, or make any mistakes dropping it off, the errors can always be corrected - as long as you have that vital tracking number.

Also, never put the tracking number into any 'public place' like a log, a photo or a forum post - Keep the tracking number secret.

You may move as many or as few as you like and can manage well. I usually pick one or two, leaving the others for the next cacher if it is a popular cache. I do however discover all that are there and write a note about them.

Another hint, and this is just the way I do it: I never pick up and drop a trackable on the same day. I pick it up one day, take it home and do all the logging. Next time I am out, I drop it off in another cache, and possibly then pick up more. That way I am less likely to get confused about the tracking number, and which one I left where.

Thank you so much for all the helpful replies and tips. I should've written down the numbers today to see what their "missions" are...or I guess I can look on my phone when I am actually there. Anyway, thank you for being so helpful:).

Treat them like a buffet.
Take all you want
Log all you take
I currently have about a dozen that ate with me on a long trip.

If I were you I'd wait in terms of picking up trackables, if you really are on "day one" as you say. Just to make sure you're going to keep up the habit of geocaching, I mean. I've had a few trackables go missing, picked up by people who are on their first day of geocaching. Despite all good intentions they never go geocaching again and the TB's and coins are goners.

I'd write down the tracking numbers and use the "discover" choice for a while. That way you can have fun watching the Travel Bugs you find move around, and at the same time not have to be responsible for them. You can even choose to be notified by e-mail when those TB's are picked up or moved. On each trackable's page there is a choice of "watch this trackable".

I have yet to take all the trackables in a cache. I took 4 once in a cache that had about 20. I have dropped 3 or 4 in a cache with none. They've got to move sometime, might as well be with you as long as you are going to actually log them and drop them in another cache.

I've heard some people claim you can only take one if you leave one, which is ridiculous of course. The only way to accomplish that is to buy a tag. Silly TB grinch's!

I've had people try to tell me that, also (trade trackables).

It's not that they are being Grinch's.... it's probably that they don't comprehend the difference between trackables and SWAG.

SWAG is something that you trade for, whereas trackables are to something to move along (nothing less and nothing more).
A simple concept really, but it just seems so difficult for some to grasp the difference.

Think they are worried that people are keeping them? More importantly, are THEY keeping them (and not logging) if they trade for them?
