Another annoying issue with the search is that if you have older/OSM map products loaded into the device a POI/map property search will take minutes to complete at best; seems searches are in all practice only usable with the latest and greatest of Garmin map products.
Have you tried POI and address search on recent OSM maps?. They're supposed to be getting better. I'm pretty sure the map governs the search more than the hardware.
Sounds quite odd. Spell search should only be a matter of a binary search anyway. Since the maps are generally hardcoded via files into the system, there is no reason for the formats not to have a sorted name database in the files from the start.
Even if the database is unsorted there is a quite zippy processor in the device. A linear search on a few million items should take no more than a couple of seconds at worst.
Search nearest is more complex, but that is another thing entirely.
And sussamb - Yes I understand there are OSM maps that will work reasonably. Older proprietary Garmin map products show the same search slugginess as certain OSM maps however so I think this is a matter of a poorly implemented search feature which doesn't work toward older databases.
