Just getting into this and wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what the best most affordable gps unit would be?

It all depends on:

--what features do you want? (this will be limited to what you have available to you as a Basic Member.)

--what exact price range do you consider "affordable"?

Without at least some basic parameters, it's pretty hard to give any advice.

Sorry it was kinda vague. I was thinking under $200. Im not sure what features to look for since i've never had a gps before. I do hike a lot and want to start geocaching. I guess nothing hardcore for now just something to get me started.

Hi, you could take a look at the new Etrex 10,20,30 range from Garmin... The e10 is pretty basic - monochrome & no mapping, the e20 (I own one of these) has colour screen and will accept 'decent' maps etc (a point to note - most GPS's come with fairy rubbish basic maps). The e30 obviously has even more functions. In any case whichever GPS you decide on make sure it has 'paperless' capabilities...that might not mean much to you at the moment, but it will fairly quickly if you DONT have it!! Also budget for Premium membership, without 'PM' theres no 'paperless'... cost per year circa 20quid/30dollars.
Good luck with your choice.

I think the DeLorme PN40 sells for right around the $200 mark. Great GPS for that money. It's not very good as far as battery life, but if you use rechargeables that isn't much of an issue. Other than that it's a darn good all around unit.
