I know nothing about Ham radio, and not much more about GPS, but could you tell this novice how Ham radio and GPS mesh? I thought Ham operators were folks who sat at their sets in their basements all night long talking to people in Borneo and such. GPS is an outdoor thing. So I'm not making the connection. Could someone enlighten me?

Paul my call is N4RS. I'm a very active county hunter. There are 3077 counties in the USA. I use the mode of morse code we call CW. I am number four in the world as to having the most counties on CW. There is also an activity of Ham Radio we call Fox Hunting where someone hides a transmiter and the rest use various types of equipment to find the transmiter, very similar to Geocaching. GPS has many uses and the speed of progress is adding many on a daily bases. I am disabled with peripheral neuropathy from the waste down. It is very difficult to walk. The wife is a Ham, her call is KB4JAA. We use radios on 2 meters if she gets too far from me or goes under bridges and such we can stay in contact. This is extremely useful for us.....Tom N4RS

Have yet to even go on the first hunt but husband, John, (K5XA) and myself, Ruthie (N5RJM) are getting ready to tackle Geocaching and traveling in a brand new Motor home. Thought it would be fun to do the two together...

Give us a separate forum, called "GPS & Ham Radio". If you like that idea, say so!

Please leave your name and callsign

Good idea. You could also ask Fred at QRZ.com to add a GPS area to the forums there. Some ingenious person might even think of a way to combine the hobbies.

KB0DQY - Colorado but it looks like my license has expired (according to some random site I found on the web). I got my Technician class license back when you had to learn Morse Code and pass a test on various subjects around radio waves and electronics. I wonder how I renew?

EDIT: Actually looks like it expired in 2008 according to the FCC and was cancelled in 2010! :( It HAD been a while since I used it...

KB3WJH name Is David and live in the Annapolis Md area usually monitoring our three repeater system on 146.075 when I am out and about. I have been caching since 2010, but really haven't gotten much until most recently when I introduced my sister to the sport. For the past couple of weeks she has been pushing to get at least 1 cache a day. Currently working on CAM2012 (cache across Maryland) but it looks like we might not finish in time. Too many responsibilities at work and she is a grocery store manager and commonly has to work on weekends.

73's everyone and see you on the net.

This is KF7UWS coming to you live from Utah. I hope all is well with all of you. I had the chance yesterday to visit the ham station on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. They have a pretty sweet set up. They actually said I could help run their station.

Received a email that this thread is being "tested" so I thought I would give it a bump with a new reply. KJ6DWX, Karen, El Cajon Calif. I only cache now and then, but when I do it's often in the desert where there is no cell service. I'd like to encourage people who are thinking of becoming licensed to go for it !!!! It's not that hard since you don't need Morse Code.

Karen your correct CW (Morse Code) is not a reguirement but is a ton of fun. I am 100% CW very envolved in county hunting. GPS is extremely useful when running counties. Presently I am #4 in the world as to having the most counties on CW. I am handicapped so the wife and I use 2meters when she has to walk any distance to a cache. We stay in constant contact this way. I live in Nodaway County-MO very nw corner of state....Tom N4RS...CW it's still magic!

We would like to invite you to a newly created forum-based community called HamCachers. My brother {K7ELH} and I {KF6YVD} are both ham radio operators and geocachers. We created this in an attempt to bring these two communities together and help each of them grow. We welcome you {and your friends} to stop by for a visit and join our community. www.hamcachers.net

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all there :)
