The way you enter a waypoint on Garmins is to mark your location and then *edit* that waypoint.

If you are not using a serial to USB adapter, you should be able to get things working without needing additional drivers. Otherwise, you should start thinking about what sort of bribe is likely to be the most effective.

With GSAK, select GPS -> GPS Setup, select eTrex H, and select the correct serial port.

There is no way to enter a waypoint from the device itself, except for marking one at the location you are currently at.

To enter a waypoint from the device itself, mark one at whatever location you're at, then edit the coordinates of the waypoint you just entered.

These GPSR's do not have the "stick" that you use to edit the waypoints, sadly.

I've got an etrex H and I love it. Mind you, I've got an Oregon 400T to use along side of it, but my H is much more accurate than my 400T.
You CAN enter coords by hand. I used mine for a long time before I got the cable.
You hit "mark" which gives you where you are, then you change the coords for that spot. You have to scroll through them and use the arrow up and down keys to change them, it's a pain in the fingertips but it works.
