Hi all,

My first post to the forums so hope I have put the topic in the right section. Anyhow, I've just ordered the Garmen eTrex 20 as a replacement for my old but trusty eTrex H. Looking through the pdf manual for the eTrex 20, information is pretty sketchy at best so thought I would ask here to see if anyone knows the answer.

As a keen photographer, (and hopefully soon a keen geocacher), I used to use my old etrex H's active track log (containing time stamps) to geotag my photos. I know that saving track logs strips out the timestamps from the log so was wondering if it is possible to set the eTrex 20 to record the active track log the the external microSD card (without stripping the timestamps) rather than internal memory limited to 10000 tackpoints. As I take long photo walks over several days, the active track log soon fills up on the etrex H and I figured if the eTrex 20 can record the Active Track data as it is recorded to the external SD it might be helpful, allowing for larger/longer logs with timestamps intact.

I have tried searching the fourum but canot find any info for the eTrex 20/30s. I did find a post stateing that it is possible with the 60csx: http://forums.Ground...dpost&p=3538036

Any help greatly apreciated
James

You can set it up to automatically archive the track. I have my etrex30 set up to archive the track daily.

Thanks for the reply, very much appreciated. Can you confirm whether or not the archived tracks retain all the time stamp data? It's just that on my old eTrex H, saving the "active log" to a "saved track" stripped out all the timestamp data making it useless for Geotagging purposes. If the etrex 20 can retain this data while archiving daily, I will be a happy bunny :)

All the data is saved on the card as a .gpx file.

Thanks Klatch, looks like I'll be a happy bunny! With any luck, the unit should arrive in the next few days.

Looks like Daily archiving of the active track log is saving all the track data including timestamps in the .gpx files, which is great news.

However, I can't seem to get it to save the archived logs to the installed SD card. The archived files are always saved to the etrex 20's internal memory (INTERAL MEMORY DRIVE:\Garmin\GPX\Archive) rather than the installed SD card (SDCARD DRIVE:\Garmin\GPX\Archive).

Does anyone know if there is an option to save to card hidden in a menu anywhere, or is there a cofig file I have to edit in order to save them to the SD card? Or can they only be saved to the default internal memory?

If you have an SD card, put your maps on it, and all the internal memory is open. You will never run out of room for track log files in archive. Track log files are small, about 10 track points per KB file size.
