Will it ever be possible for me to download Wherigo downloads to my iMac or my iPhone?

iPhone: yes, you can do that now, there's an official Groundspeak app. Search the Wherigo forums.

iMac: unlikely. Is there an iMac with GPS capability ?

If you want to *build* cartridges with your iMac, you can use Earwigo. Again, search these nearby forums.

Yeah, if we're understanding your request right, it's just a file: you should be able to download the cartridge to your iMac and load it onto your iPhone. As sTeamTraen pointed out, you can also do that directly with the Wherigo app on the iPhone.
