On Version 3.0 Beta 2, I can't seem to get more than 8 characters either in Mapsourse, NG Topo or when I download directly into my Garmin Vista.  waypoint set for %smart  and 10 set for max characters; Cache description format set for %typ (%Dif/%Ter) %By %name; problem character apostophe only '

Yes, basically what Volwrath said.

This one does tend to keep coming up a lot. As the help file is not yet up to date, I really do urge everyone to at least read the release notes for version 3.

This is also covered fully here but I guess this thread does tend to move quickly, so I can understand if you missed it.

Oh %smart10

You know I read that before and forgot.

Sorry.

Not %smart10 but %smart=10

But I do have anoither problem. When I dump to my Vista it locks up about half way through. I'm running WIN98 SE. When I try to re-dump I get a message say COM 1 port is busy (or active?). SO I shut down GSAK and try to dump from my regular Mapsourse and get the same message.

So I found that Babel is running in the background and had to End Task of Babel from the CLose Program window (Contr Alt Delete) before the COM1 port would be recognized again.

I just upgraded to 3.0 beta2, and now it will not center the caches around my home coords. They are entered, but will not filter. Even when I select a caches and use as centerpoint, it does nothing. Am I doing somethig wrong? Thanks!

This one sounds weird. I have had not other reports of this.

First, try rebooting your computer.

They are entered, but will not filter

This statement doesn't make sense, please explain.

Sounds like GPSBabel is hanging in the middle of the transfer.

Reboot your computer and try again.

If still the same result, then try doing the upload with GPSBabel alone. If you still get the lock up then I suggest you take this up in the GPSBabel lists here

This may be a stupid question, but how do I mark a group of caches in GSAK?

Usually I would hold down the SHIFT key or use the CTRL key to mark them but that doesnt seem to work.

Thanks in advance for any help...

BTW I am test driving Beta 2

Marking records in GSAK revolves around the user flag (column heading with a blue tick)

You can set and clear user flags in bulk (see the "User Flags" menu)

You can set/clear them individually by mouse clicking in the box.

Once you have the required user flags set, then set a filter on "user flag" = "set"

You now have a sub set of you database that only contains those records that have the "user flag" set. All GSAK options (eg GPS send, HTML export, etc) will then only use those records.

When I export as GEOCACHE FOUND icon's as a MPS file and open it up in Mapsource, they open up as Amusment Park Icons, not sure why, but it does...

What version of MapSource are you using?

It could be that some of the old versions do not support the "Geocahce Found" symbol and therefore default to the "Amusement Park" symbol.

Comments from other MapSource users?

The default will be the amusement icon but you can simply CHANGE the icon setting when you do the export and save it.

This worked fine for me with mapsource 4 and now 5. - JamesJM

This threw me the first time I thought I saw it happen, then I realized what's going on. The distance calculation is happening, but a prior sort option is taking precedence and so the display does not appear to be changing. If you look closely though, the distance and bearing fields do update. All you need to do is click on the miles column to tell GSAK to sort the records by distance.

edit: change dist. to miles

Thanks for the help on the flag select help, but is there anyway to select a group of waypoints as you would with any other programs? Here's the scenario, currently I have been using Utopia to create CSV files for streets and trips. I would select all of the traditional caches using SHFT and click, once selected I would export it to a CSV. Clear that selection and do the same for multi then virtual and so on... Then I would load each of the CSV's into streets and trips with different colour pushpins so I can differentiate between cache types.

With a database size of about 1500 waypoints it would take quite a while to mark out each of the items and create the filter...

Other than this little setback I love GSAK !!

I guess the term "select a group of waypoints" is synonymous with setting a filter in GSAK - and what you are asking is very easy to do. You sure as hell don't have to select each of them individually :D

The user flag is mainly used when you want to select individual caches.

In your case just set a filter on traditional caches then export.

Then set a filter on Multi, then export. There is no need to select or highlight the records. When you set a filter it limits your database to a subset of records that meet your filter criteria. You can then export just that subset to streets and trips or any of the other supported formats.

Note that filters are not limited to just cache type. Have a look at the filter dialog. There are many fields you can use to create a subset. For instance, using a filter it is very ease to "Select only micro caches, that I haven't found, 5 miles from home".

There are many other combinations you can dream up. Also note you can save your filters. This is very handy if you have a complicated filter - you don't have to make it up each time, just select from the list of saved filters.

I would add this observation: it takes perhaps a *little* more time to create and save a filter than to make a selection from a list ala Explorer. But once done, it is quicker to use the saved filter than to have to re-sort and select a list of waypoints. Think of it as an investment with an excellent rate of return!

Related question-

Is there anyway to specify the icon types uplaoded to my GPSr for cache/container type? I would like to have different icons for micros, virtuals, and regular caches. There is already the option for setting icons for archived, owned, and active caches, but not that I can see for the different active cache types.

I know I can filter each list and set each cache icon uploaded with each filtered list, but it would be nice to be able to do it all in one shot.

Forgive me if this had been asked before.

Thanks, and I too love the program. I would be glad to send $ for your efforts.

Until the geocaching community can convince the major GPSr manufacturers to develop specific icons for the various cache types we are limited to using existing icons that are available. Of course we have the geocache and geocache found ones which was a big step forward but no others to date.

I have personally chosen a "pizza" for owned by me, "skull & crossbone" for archived/not available, "campground" for home, Mom, daughter etc. and "car" for parking waypoint. When uploading to my GPSr I only have to change the "not found" to one of the above.

To further identify the cache type would mean assigning a bunch more icons that do not relate to cache type and performing a bunch more filtering and uploading.

We'll just have to wait for Garmin, Magellan, etc. to give us more geocaching specific icons.

Bug, Feature, Not suppose to do that, or just don't know what I'm doing?

Using Beta 2 I created a couple of my own waypoints. I clicked on the "Lock" checkbox to stop GPX file from overriding data.

I exported the 2 waypoints to a GPX file, deleted the waypoints in my test database, then re-imported the gpx file I had just written.

All looked good except the lock box wasn't checked from the imported file.

I can understand that the feature is used to prevent new data from over ridding what is already in the database, but does that mean if I export my main database as a GPX file for use as a backup, that I would have to manually go back and check the "Lock" box when I reimport it? (Assuming I reimported AFTER I accidentaly deleted my main database).

This is not what I'm asking for- I know you can already do what you are describing.

I would like to select which icons I use for active cache types (virtual, mystery, micro, etc.) (the way spinner does) and have them uploaded in one shot, rather than having to filter each type and do each list individually.

You can already save the preferences as to how you'd like them to match up. If you like the way spinner does it, just duplicate the icon matching and then save that as the default.

Check out the Combine Both icon matching radio option.

This is more a problem with the "Streets and trips" export format rather than GSAK - someone correct me here if I am wrong.

Unlike MapSource and Mapsend, "Streets and trips" do not allow you to set the icon for each waypoint (you do this at import time, setting the same icon for ALL the waypoints).

So until "Streets and trips" allow for the setting of the icon type in their CSV format, this will not be possible.

Regarding long similar cache names and non-unique %smart-name.

I was about to suggest a kind of 'conversion-table', customizable by the user, to take care of long similar names of caches that got converted to the same smart-name. But then comes along Beta2 with improved smart names. Thanx.

It fixed that problem.

But such a table could perhaps be useful anyway?

It might be cache names you want to convert to something else than what

the %smart-tag gives you. As an example I would convert 'Bernhard#' to only

'BH' while %smart gives med Bernh (when set to =7 (with a trailing two digits)),

and PPJ gets converted to Ppj. If I could maintain a list of such conversions, sort

of like the State-abbreviation tab in the Options setting, it would be sort of the best from two worlds.

And perhaps a repeat request, options for assigning colours to waypoints in Ozi in the same manner as asigning symbols in the dialogue for transfering waypoints to GPS.

btw, I just love this program more and more. It's awsome.

hbrx.

I just ran across an interesting anomoly. This cache when loaded into GSAK loses some of the cache name. The Down by the Railroad by Yonke becomes Down by Yonke . I'm guessing that you are searching for the 'by' when parsing the name.

Thanks for looking into this

Hi Brian,

Using LOC files as our source data are we?

This is yet another reason to get the GPX files from geocaching.com

Aside from the fact that LOC files have VERY limited information in them (you only get about 10% use out of GSAK with these files), the cache description and hider of the cache are lumped into the one data element.

As there is no way for tools like GSAK to distinguish between cache name and person hiding the cache in LOC files, GSAK tries to do the best it can by using "by" to break this information up.

This is a known problem with LOC files. GPX files from geocaching.com do not have this issue.

I have never loaded any .loc files into GSAK. This data did come from my pocket queries. I'll do a little more investigating when I get home from work.

Thanks

Brian

OK, sorry for making that assumption.

Could you please send me a copy of the GPX file you are loading so I can duplicate the problem and sort this out.

Thx

Clyde,

Didn't see that this was covered before.

Maybe a bug in 3.00 beta 2. Did a receive from my receiver which had only 7 wpt's in it. Program only picked up 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7. These were in a cleared memory Magellan and wpt's we did for a cache to hide.

Did our other Magellan with 5 wpt's and it only took 2,3 and 5.

Looks like it doesn't like the "1" and "4" for some reason....

Thanks

Could you send me the babel.txt (located in the install folder of GSAK) after doing this - there might be something obvious I can see.

Also could you try this with GPSBabel alone and see if you get the same result?

Saw your post about the new individual cache GPX downloads in this topic. I tried one for a cache that I've found and imported it into an existing database in GSAK. I notice that GSAK doesn't recognize that I've found it.

I haven't used this filter before because all my pocket queries are setup for caches I haven't found. How does this work in GSAK? Is this another problem with the new individual cache GPX files in addition to the archive status you mentioned.

Yes, it is a problem with the new single GPX download. See LilDevils post here

However, the latest Beta version of GSAK (3.00 Beta 2) should correct this problem by searching your logs to see if you have found the cache.

I tried this and it worked form me.

However, If you have 3.00 beta 2 and it still did not indicate this cache was found I think I might know the problem.

GSAK now interrogates all the logs, looking for finds to correct your found count. The logic it uses to match a log to you is the same logic as your “placed by” caches – see Tools=>Options and the “Method for matching placed (hidden) caches”

So if you don’t get this right I would also expect your “Placed” count to be incorrect (assuming you have some placed caches), i.e. equal to zero

So if your “Placed” count is correct, but the new single GPX file does not show up as a found cache then we have a problem. Please e-mail me the Single GPX file your are loading together with the “GSAK.ini” file (located in the install folder of GSAK) and I should be able to get to the bottom of it.

Ok now Clyde,

We figured out what my problem was with a couple of entries in the permanant delete database. I surely don't remember putting a couple of receiver made wp's in there but point is.....

I have done that with a few caches before also. Looked all over trying to figure out why they weren't loading. Is there any kind of indicator that could be put on the menu bar or someplace to remind a person that they have items in the list. Or would it just be me and pin a sticky note to my forehead. :bad:

When you load a GPX/LOC file into the database it does tell you how many waypoints were NOT loaded because they are in the permanent delete list.

I will have a look at adding a similar message when downloading waypoints from your GPS.

Clyde,

I guess the thing to do is make sure the box is NOT CHECKED when deleting files if you ever want them to load again. That was my problem. I had some wp's from my receiver and had deleted a couple. They went in the permanent list because I hadn't unchecked the box. Now I know and hope everyone else will too. Of course everyone else figured that part out a long time ago. ;)

Add versions of abreviated tags for %Con and %typ. At present they display the full word "REGULAR" as in size of cache and "TRADITIONAL" as type of cache. This is fine, except that with 60C/S you only have space for 30 charactors. So saving space helps alot. If possible add two more tags that shorten the words to 3 or 4 charactors.

Thanks. Great tool!

Where do I send the check?

Hi Greg,

Not sure what version of GSAK you are using but 3.00 allows for %con1 and %typ1 which is the first character respectively. See here for a full list of %tags supported in V3.00

As for the 30 characters on the 60 C/S. Is this the limit of the waypoint?

I'm not sure, but I thought the 60 C/S also allowed for a generous amount of text in the comments (cache description). You can use the same tags for building the waypoint code as the description (comments) I suggest you keep the waypoint codes down to a minimum and use the expanded versions in the description.

Great program, I can't imagine the hours of work that have gone into it. Thanks.

frefel

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

However, I think this may not be the only case of this "oversight"

I must confess, I haven't spent too much time on the help for the Beta versions. There are many dialogs that are not up to date and/or missing help. I did make mention of this in my initial release post.

Rest assured, the final release will have the help up to date. Maybe not perfect, but in better shape than it is in now.

When is the final release? I am happy to say that Beta 2 is proving quite stable. There have been a few issues (read bugs) reported but so far nothing major. At this stage I doubt there will be a Beta 3, instead the next release will be final. As GSAK now has a link in the software section of gc.com there a quite a lot of people downloading the program and giving it a good work out. Some have even pick up minor bugs that go right back to version 1. At this stage I would like to give it just a little more time out in the field (4-5) days, then I will probably go final.

Regarding the 60 C/S limits

Waypiont=10 charactors

Note/Description=30 charactors.

I think both limits are too low.
