Phil The ScubaDiver
Alot of people have been critizizing me and saying Geocaching isn't a sport, it's a hobby. What do you think it is. And why? Quote Link to comment
+Gorak
If bowling and golf can be sports, then geocaching is definately a sport. Quote Link to comment

+Polgara
I think it depends on what it takes to sign the log. Quote Link to comment
Clown Knife
Geocaching is whatever it is for whomever, whenever, and however. If sitting in a duck blind all day long waiting for a duck to land or fly by is a sport? Then.......I rest my case! GEOCACHING IS DEFINITELY A SPORT! Just as ORIENTEERING is a sport. +Team Cacheopeia
The way I do it (head out every couple weeks, hit a few caches at a time here and there) it's a hobby. There's no real competition and no major physical exertion (at least for most of them). There are the big-leaguers, though, who hit billions a day, running uphill to the tops of mountains and such... yep, I'd say that's a sport. Jaime Quote Link to comment
+Navdog
Most activities labeled a sport entail some type of competition. Therefore, I prefer to call geoacaching a sport. The competition is between me and that box somewhere out there in the woods. Quote Link to comment

I agree that it's a sport. You don't have to be an athlete to play golf and it's a sport. My opinion differs when you compare geocaching and orienteering. Orienteering takes a bit more effort and skill than geocaching or golf. I had the fortune to see part of an orienteering competition during a geocaching event. (Unrelated, we were just in the same park.) The people I saw were mostly athletic. I plan to try my hand at orienteering as soon as I get this "Jared of Geocaching" thing that I'm working on ironed out. Sn gans Quote Link to comment

+El Diablo
I really think it is the way you as an individual views it. Some people view it as a sport because they like to compete with others to see who can find the most. Others view it as a hobby because they really don't care how many finds others have, they just want the enjoyment of hunting them. So in reality it's a sport/hobby. Up to you. El Diablo p.s To me it's a hobby. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Main Entry: sport Function: noun Date: 15th century 1 a : a source of diversion : RECREATION (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure. Sounds like a sport to me. Quote Link to comment
dsandbro
I like George Carlin's definition of a sport: 1) It has to be played with a ball, 2) There is a chance of serious injury, 3) You can bet on the outcome, and 4) spectators can drink beer. Geocaching only meets two of the four. Quote Link to comment

+Divine
The way the meaning of Finnish translations of sport and hobby sound in my ear makes me definitely want to define geocaching as hobby. So, it's a hobby for me. Quote Link to comment
