+rogbarn
I have been going thru the new list of airway beacons. Sometimes they are obviously AIRPORT BEACONs. Sometimes it is just a beacon on top of a building, tank or other sort tall structure. I have no idea if using a marker type AIRWAY BEACON is appropriate for these or not. But I have no doubt that CM2265 is not an AIRWAY BEACON. In the description, it is referred to as a USGS bench mark. But the biggest clue is that it is stamped "STA 17 1905" indicating that it was put in in 1905. I doubt there was much need for airway beacons in 1905! The other problem with this datasheet is that it indicates the benchmark was "FIRST OBSERVED" in 1941. How can a marker be observed? Is there some way to research this? DaveD? jeff35080, is this anywhere near you? Quote Link to comment
+jeff35080
Hmmm.... I'm in Birmingham, so that is a bit of a drive. I just bookmarked it and the next time I go to Alexander City I'll go see what I can find. I just wonder what I'l looking to find? A disk or a beacon? Quote Link to comment
2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
Roger, check pid CM2266. In the descritpion it references 'sta 17 1905' as the azimuth mark that is .4 mi. away. The coordinates for CM2265 are listed as adjusted so maybe someone from that area could go to the site and check it out to see what is there? John Quote Link to comment
+GeckoGeek
It sounds like some kind of "cross pollination". One datasheet somehow got entered into another one. Quote Link to comment
+rogbarn
DaveD, can you make any sense out of this? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
+rogbarn
Bump in hopes that DaveD sees it. It looks like CM2265 has the data for part of CM2266 on it. Considering it is an airway beacon, perhaps the easiest thing is to just pull it? Quote Link to comment
DaveD
I have sent a correction notice to the NGS data base team. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Quote Link to comment
