+The Cheeseheads
Now that I've been caching for awile, I don't trade as much as I used to. I do bring stuff for trading when I bring my 2 and 4 year old along with. It's always nice to see items in the cache that they can pick from, and we'll always trade for something that somebody else's kids might like as well. Quote Link to comment
+Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle
I usually keep a little stash of stuff I pick up from end-caps at the local dept. store. But most of my trades are items from previous caches. And of course Rainey' signature 'Magical Brass Belles'. We get those at a local hippy bead shop, then she puts her 'magic' on them before we place them. Quote Link to comment
+Dan-oh
Wow, briansnat nailed most of my stuff. A few of mine that weren't on his list include: - glow sticks - small calculators - thermometer zipper pulls - mini tape measure - Silly Putty - new, bagged bandana Micro swag is always hard to find. Coins and good stickers work well. Big movers for me are flashlights. I typically use the squeeze lights but I've used a few mini-mag lights as FTF prizes or on some of my tough hides. For some reason, playing cards are slow movers. Dunno why. Quote Link to comment
+Gizmo & Brazin
And let's not forget things for Fido. A lot of Geocachers take their dogs and it's fun to leave doggie toys, bandanas, etc. Quote Link to comment
+Life Journey
I recently stocked up on a few 'closeouts' from Target: Small waist pack with water bottle - I got them for $2.48 Bottles of bug repellent - I think the name was Repel - I got them for .74 Golf ball markers and divot tool (.74) - nobody likes golf balls, but I'm hoping someone will like a new pack of these. Frisbee type rings and boomerangs - .74 to $2.48 A new softball and baseball - .74 each And from WalMart: Measuring spoon set (marked down to .99) Small screwdriver sets (marked down to .99) Small measuring tape (12 ft - marked down to .99) For the kids: Glow bracelets (44 cents each) I'm making a ziplock packet of 1 or 2 small coloring books (.50 each) and a 16 pack of crayons (.57) - I make 'theme' packets - dinosaurs, power rangers, Disney. Lots more ideas keep coming - everytime I'm at WalMart or Target, I see something else to pick up. Now I just need to find the time to actually go out and hit the caches!!!! Quote Link to comment
Max & Me
Hear hear, Gizmo, et al. Cache items for Fido, DEFINITELY a good idea. I cache with the "real" Max-dog all the time, and he would enjoy stuff just for him. I haven't placed my own cache yet, but it will likely be a "themed" cache with Fidos in mind! blocko1000
Pez dispensers are what I leave sometimes. I am finding them at the dollar stores more and more. The dollar stores are a great place to find cheap cache items. Quote Link to comment
+OurWoods
Hear hear, Gizmo, et al. Cache items for Fido, DEFINITELY a good idea. I cache with the "real" Max-dog all the time, and he would enjoy stuff just for him. I haven't placed my own cache yet, but it will likely be a "themed" cache with Fidos in mind! The dollar stores around here have a pet section, with lots of great dog toys. Including Rope Pull Toys, Tennis Ball Toys, Squeak Toys. I often leave those. I would avoid leaving dog treats or rawhide type items. Or anything with a strong scent, pez dispensers are neat, but the kind with the candy packets in with them might cause wild animals to smell out the cache and destroy it. +bennet
I like to leave toothbrushes (still in the package - not used ones ). Distributing toothbrushes is definitely a benefit to humankind (kind of like Johnny Appleseed). I like to be creative on FTF prizes. I've given a Blockbuster gift card, and an engraved FTF trophy. +JegMag
Please no dog bones -- they tend to get moldy and yucky if there is any moisture. I know many people leave batteries -- which is a nice thought, however; we have found many that have corroded. I think this was due to moisture exposure also. Packs of tissue are most appreciated! +Stunod
I like to leave toothbrushes (still in the package - not used ones ). I've found a "new" toothbrush in a cache, but because it was in a cardboard box (as opposed to the newer all plastic packaging), it was a sloppy mess in the leaky cache. Ugh Quote Link to comment
+WalruZ
think park visitor center shops. I've had great luck with replica arrowheads 50c each from a local shop. they're in a tiny plastic bag with a slip of paper that has the park name on it. they're always the first thing taken from a cache after i visit it. +Spoo
Here in the cold weather pens are a problem and freeze. Try leaving sharpened pencils and even the little tiny pencil sharpeners that you had in the 1st grade. Also: Marbles Any small camping/hiking items like small compass, collapsable drinking cup, signal mirror, water proof match container, etc. Books, pamphlets or maps of the area. Quote Link to comment
