Warning System

Got my first warning today!!!!

So proud, it's like someone telling you "hey your right, but we can't have that here"

here was my mistake

Probably should have never said to flame a Moderator :(

So how many times and for what have you been warned about?

The warning system is probably a good thing, but I was very offended by getting it just for signing up to the forum. I don't think they should hand them out to every new member, it's kinda like saying "hey, we know your going to mess up and we are watching and waiting."

What do you think?

Allow me to clarify that warnings are NOT "handed out to every new member." Everyone starts with a warning meter level of zero when they come to the forums. It's built into the software on this forum and many, many others. Well over 90 percent of the forum community never has to worry about their warn meter; it will just sit at zero. It will stay that way unless and until you violate the Forum Guidelines.

This second paragraph constitutes my personal opinion only: I look at warnings as a teaching and communication tool. Warning levels are increased and decreased regularly through communications between the moderators and the community members. As such, it is really a private thing. Only you and the moderators can see your warning meter. I have never quite understood the motivation for trumpeting to the world that "I got a warning." The forums would be more enjoyable for many readers if everyone followed the forum guidelines, quit acting like a martyr when a warning is handed out, and directed their energies to positive discussions about geocaching.

Well, after you said this:
The guy who told warned you should be flammed, record his/her name and the next time your at an area event point at this lunitic and say HEY HE HATES PEOPLE THAT ARE HANDICAPED!!

Seriously, post this persons name here, since you have stated your leaving it won't really matter to you and we will all take fun in messing with him/her.

I'd have been shocked if you DIDN'T get a warning. You misrepresented what the mod said, and on top of that suggested harrasment, which isn't OK in the forums under any circumstances. Ironically, it was in a thread about someone else being surprised that THEY got a warning.

it's like someone telling you "hey your right, but we can't have that here"

Actually, it isn't. It's like having someone say "hey we can't have that here." You made up the part about anyone saying it was right.

You didn't get a warning just for signing up for the forum. You got a warning for breaking the rules. It has nothing to do with being new either. Lots of people never get warnings at all. The few that do often get more than one. Now why would that be? If you think it's some kind of mod conspiracy, you'll probably never see the real reason.

It's not really my business whether you got a warning or not. But you did ask for my opinion...

Never had a warning.

Never used the astrick option, I just use a different word.

Always count to 100 before hitting the reply button when I feel emotionaly involved with the topic.

Always assume that the post that got me riled was intended in the most positive manner. (This is a tough one sometimes.)

Always remember it's just a game.

Finally!!!! Someone else who gets it! I thought I was the only one.

Thank goodness I'm not alone.

I've typed at least three times more forum posts than I've ever posted. I usually let them set on the computer for 15 minutes before I punch submit. 2/3s of the time I delete them instead. Usually in the time I've taken to think about it some-one else has posted the stupid emotional reply I had typed, or I just need the time to realize that the world won't stop turning and we are still just a group of people hunting tupperware boxes and ammo cans. It's kinda like counting to 10 before you punish your kids. You gotta focus on the punishment, not the anger or emotion.

See you agree every new member is givin a warning.

I probably should have wrote meter but you still get the idea.

Ment the warning meter we all get for no reason, will probably go back and put that in so no one else does not understand that.

Yeah I made up the "You where right, but we can't have that here"

the "can't have that here" and the "I was right" <_<, made them both up.

Never said I did not deserve it, Still feel the same way about 'that' topic.

I do really mean The warning meter that was hadded out to you as to say "Your guilty, untill proven inocent"

I wrote an email pretty much venting to the admin, but never wrote I did not deserve it.

Glad to know so many people getting in trouble

i saw the warning meter as soon as i joined the forums. i did not take it as an insult. having belonged to other forums where there are no warning systems, i have seen how mean spirited and offensive people can be. my meter has always been at zero. i have been given verbal warnings which i deserved, so i backed off on what i was doing. i am handicapped myself. i have lupus. i would never point someone out at an event or in the forums and say they hate people who are handicapped. that is just not civilized. if that is why you got your warning, IMO, you deserved it. just MY opinion.

I've never been warned! I am sweet and innocent angel.

<imaged removed>

Yeah riiiiiight!

Happy caching and stuff<_<

You got me in trouble at school. The teacher thought I was looking at porno and I wasn't, I was just in the geocaching forums!

On Topic: I have never been warned, but I am curious what it looks like when I get warned.

Sorry, my friend. I didn't mean to get anyone in trouble.

But . . . I am what I am!

My understanding is that the meter is part of the software. It isn't meant as an insult or reminder to new forum members. It is just there. If it was meant to tell a person they are "guilty until proven innocent" it would start with warnings on the meter that would be decreased with good behavior, instead of starting at 0.

Basically, I don't understand why the existence of the meter should be viewed as a problem.

Thank you Rusty_tlc. That sums things up nicely. <_<

...Ugh! I'm in love!

The real Geo Ho is better looking.

For the record, my warnings were not because I was trying to be a jackass. It's for saying things like "I wasn't trying to be a jackass". (Mods please note that didn't start with "B" Thanks.) a**-U-Me-ing that all people who have gotten warnings are pond scum (dadgum, rusty that substitution thing has potential in some situations) as opposed to willing to discussion things frankly is a mistake.

Rusty has a good point and some of my best posts are the ones that I never hit send on.

Woodsters uses the same BBS system and they don't have meters turned on. The smaller audience though probably makes it easier to 'keep control'. The reason the warning meter is an insult is the same reason adult children do not really want to hear their parents nag them "kiss your wife good bye, and wear clean underwear" every morning with a call before going to work.

Whether the warning system is so blatantly visible or not the mods have the ability to edit posts, PM you when you crossed the line, and set up your posts for moderating. I think the only real purpose the warning meter serves is so they can track a persons history of being pond scum, rather like a criminal record.

Wrong.

Woodsters is using ikonboard forum software, and Groundspeak is using Invision Power Board software.

Um, no, no I don't.

Mine started at zero, so I got a warning meter, not a warning.
