60cs Photos

Recommended Posts

Here are a bunch of screen shots of my new 60cs that I just got yesterday. I decided to start a new thread with these shots so I did not screw up one of the other threads for the bandwidth impaired. It is tough to get real clear pictures of the screen because of the glare off of the glass, but I did the best I could. The actual screen looks much better than these photos. So far, I think the unit is awesome and these screen shots don't even begin to tell the story of all of the great features of this unit. It was worth the wait. RM

That's great, thanks. Now I'm even more excited. Mine will be here by Wed.

How's the screen show up in the car? Someone said it wasn't that good? Was that you? Maybe with the light on all the time?

The screen seemed fine in the car to me. During the day, the backlight did not make much difference but at night, it really lights the screen up. I have not tried it in the car at night yet.

If you set the map display mode to day, you get a pale orange background with light brown lines for the minor roads (the manual shows a yellow background with red lines - does anyone know how to get those colors on the map?). The night display mode has a black background with light brown lines for minor streets.

Thanks for the great pics!

I noticed in the sequence that the batt life dropped by one bar. B)

Mine got mixed around in a shipping snafu so taking a bit longer but your thread helps me out a little bit. It's almost like I have it in MY hand.

Not really. :P

The battery seems to be holding up fairly well. I have used the unit with the backlight on a lot of the time because I have been playing around with it in the house. Over the time that I took the photos, the battery indicator bounced back and forth between two and three bars but has been at three most of the time. It is still at three bars today.

BTW: I forgot to include my favorite screen shot.

Hi,

Thank you for the nice pictures. I am strongly considering the purchase of a new 60cs. What do you see as the strengths to the 60cs over other GPSr units from Garmin and Magellan? Is it the very cool color display or are there some features that are really useful?

Thanks for any input.

Too bad you edited the coordinate of the first screen shot, I was coming over for dinner B)

Anyway the main strengths of the 60c series are color, autorouting, waypoint averaging. I am also beginning to like the geocaching mode more. Its nice to have a list of caches you hit after a long day. I also feel the antenna is very strong as is the accuracy. My GPS stays on EPE of 7' a heckuva lot.

How observant that you noticed. Since the coordinates were for my back yard, I decided to remove them.

I don't blame you a bit! It stood out on the satellite page though.

Anyway, one thought to you. Get a screen protector on that beautiful screen!!

Hi RocketMan,

Just a quick question for you. What mapsource software have you loaded, or did you? I got my CS 2 days ago and it is my first mapping gps. It has absolutely no street detail like yours does and many of the minor highways in my area are not present either. I am just trying to find out if my basemap is screwd up before I buy and try to load a mapsource product.

Thanks

Mark.

Dirt,

If you live in the US, then you will need CitySelect 5. Amazon.com has the cheapest price I have seen. The basemap on the 60cs leaves alot to be desired, but has the interstates and most major highways. I give the basemap a d. Anyway thats what you need.

EDIT: The basemap does not have THE major highway around my house (but does have some minor ones) Don't worry about your basemap being defective, it just sucks. My legend had a much better basemap!

I went out and did some geocaching with the unit yesterday and it worked out well. I let the unit autoroute me to the general cache area and then I used the "Off Road" option to find the cache. Here are a few photos using the geocache mode:

Since posting the photos, I have had people e-mail me with questions in addition to the questions that have been asked in this thread. Hopefully the following will answer those questions:

First of all, I am not just using the base map, I have the “North American City Select v5” maps loaded. The base map is useless for navigating; it just has major roads and will tell you what general region you are in.

This has already been discussed to death in other threads, but I will repeat it here for completeness. If you want to upload waypoints via the USB cable that comes with the unit, you can do so using the Garmin Mapsource program. Mapsource comes with City Select, but if you can also load the “Trip & Waypoint Manager” software that comes with the 60cs which will install Mapsource. After installing Mapsource, plugging in and turning on the 60cs will automatically load the USB driver and make the USB option available in the “Save To” and “Receive From” menus.

As far as loading geocaching waypoints into the 60cs goes, if you can get them into Mapsource, you can load them into the 60cs. Giving your Mapsource waypoints the “Geocache” icon is what tells the 60cs to go into “Geocache” mode when searching for the waypoint. Whatever is in the waypoint description field in Mapsource, will go into the note field on the 60cs. In my case, I had the cache name in that field.

There are numerous ways to get the geocaching waypoints into Mapsource, including manual entry, but here is how I do it. I downloaded a Pocket Query for my area and then used EasyMps to put the waypoints into Mapsource. By default, EasyMps will give the waypoints the proper found or unfound geocaching icons and it will put the cache name into the description field. That’s all there is to it. You can also do the same thing with gpsbabel, GASK and some of the other GPX programs.

I hope this helps,

Rocket Man

Hey, I notice you dropped down another bar on the battery.

Thanks for sharing some more photos! Should hold me over 'til mine arrives this week.

Thanks for the great pixs. I ordered (and paid for) mine 6 weeks ago and I've been dying to get my hands on it. Now I'm patiently waiting for it to make its way from New Jersey to California in the back of a UPS truck. I should have popped for 2 day or even overnight. I've read the User Manual PDF from cover to cover.

I'm glad the screen is easy to read in the sunlight. I took a chance buying this sight unseen and was hoping it would work better than my color cell phone screen which is worthless in the sunlight.

Also thanks for explaining the download process. Garmin's manual states they have download info on their website but I sure couldn't find it. I was just starting to figure out the best way to download so you saved me a ton of time.

Any idea if City Select has off road trails or will I need one of the Topo map products?
