In the latest issue of National Geographic April 2004 Pg. 91 .In an article about the Badlands and fossils the author brings up the fact that Geo-cachers have listed coords for fossil sights and are worried that others will come and steal fossils because of listed GPS coords. Not a nice light shown on geocaching or cachers.

Perhaps what *we* can then do is help protect these sites by NOT posting the coordinates. After all, this is a recreation, a passion, an addictive hobby, and not anything else. Lets ALL do our conservation part, to include protecting the cache site surroundings!

I don't see how posting coordinates for a scenic area is any different than featuring it in a magazine. Both will result in people visiting the location. Both could result in the problems and damage that was referenced.

Neither are an invitation to steal artifacts or damage sensitive terrain.

Suggest you look at this thread here National Geographic

The cache in question was a virtual on a trail readily available and openly promoted by the park. Sorry no super secret locations with fossils and the fossils at this site can't be removed beacuse of the public nature of the location. If the park has a no caching policy all they had to do was ask it to be removed.

Perhaps *we* need to *send* an e-mail to all the parties concerned thanking them for making such uniformed comments.
