GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife)

Recommended Posts

Scenario: I'm going on a business trip (without laptop), and I want to print the descriptions of 20 caches. I don't want to do to gc.com and print each page out.

Question: How is this best acheived with GSAK? Can it be acheived with GSAK.

AJK,

I'll try not to hijack this thread, but I don't believe there is an easy solution to this. (Although as I haven't explored all of GSAK's many features, I could be wrong.)

The method I use is to use GSAK to select only those caches I want, then save them in a separate .GPX file.

Download Fuzzy's GPX to PalmDoc Converter, which is really designed for PDAs, but I don't have one. GPX to PalmDoc will display your GPX file as a stripped down, text only version of the cache pages (made for upload to a PDA). I simply highlight this text, and send it to my printer. (I print two pages per sheet, double-sided.)

Without logs, I can usually get about 30 caches per sheet of paper.

If there is a way to use GSAK to do this, I'd love to hear it.

Jamie

I was trying to use the Export to Magellan Protocol (SD CARD) and having someproblems.

I selected to put the file on my Harddrive, and hit the GENERATE button.

The Progress meter zipped up to 100%, then an error appeared:

Error sending waypoints:

MAGPROTO cannot open 'C:\mg.txt' for read. Error was 'No such file or directory'

No file was created.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm new to GSAK but like what I've seen so far. I would like to be able to easily print the off-line browser pages with the hint on the same page. The version history seems to indicate it is possible (From - 3.0 Beta2: 19 March 2004: Add option to HTML generation to list hints on same page). However, I cannot find the location to turn this option on. I have looked in Tools -> Options -> HTML but don't see it. Where do I turn the option on?

Thanks for your help.

Files -> Export -> HTML Files -> There is a check box on the dialog box for including hint on same page a little over half way down.

Is there a way to get the "Hints" autmatically to show on my notes section of my Garmin 60CS? I see something that has a terrain/difficulty code, but I'm not seeing that info show up either.

Curretnly no.

I will be adding the %hint tag in the next release

Currently GSAK really only allows printing of the HTML view 1 page at a time. (You have 4 formats to choose from)

How? From the split screen view (bottom half) right mouse click, then select "Print".

I will admit GSAK is lacking in the print department.

As I have been getting quite a few e-mails from new users on this, it is rapidly moving to the top of my "to do" list.

In the next significant release (3.1) of GSAK I hope to add the ability to print from the database - allowing for a preview in HTML format. This will mainly be a column type report (similar to the current grid) with the user being able to select what fields (read columns) to print. I will also look at the option to automatically print the full html page, allowing you to print a single page or a whole filter.

Further down the track I will allow the HTML print version to be customised by the user via templates (I.E. like GPX spinner)

GSAK uses GPSBabel "under the hood" for this conversion.

It would now seem that the version of GPSBabel shipped with GSAK 3.00(1.2.2_Beta02222004) has this bug.

I just tried this with the final version 1.2.2 of Babel and it works OK.

Why didn't I ship the final 1.2.2 version of Babel with GSAK? Unfortunately, this version has an even bigger problem in that GPS communications with many a Garmin GPS is broken. I have just been given a Beta copy of GPSBabel 1.2.3, which does seem to fix these problems, but as it is not yet available to the public I don't want to get the babel guys offside by making an unofficial version public.

Your options:

1. Download the latest GPSBabel 1.2.2, Override the file GPSBabel.exe in the install folder of GSAK with this one. This will fix the SD card problem, but you should also check to make sure sending waypoints to your GPS (via serial cable) still works. If you don't send waypoints to your GPS this way, then there is no issue.

2. Beg me for a copy of the latest GPSBabel 1.2.3 Beta. Though I will not make public, I am hoping that Mr Lipe won't mind if I give it to a couple of users in need.

Note: You can use the menu option Help=>About to confirm the version of GPSBabel that GSAK is using

I couldn't be happier with GSAK - it really has taken the functionality of a handful of stand-along programs, used in a specific sequence, and replaced it with a single, multi-faceted tool. I'm still trying to explore all the bells and whistles - but this tool is getting fairly close to undermining my need/desire for a dedicated database (after all, that's what this IS!).

Here's something I've noticed, and perhaps it's just a matter of RTFM - but when I do an export to M$ Streets and Trips, I can't seem to get the values to parse correctly. I haven't fully explored the options available, but it seems that mostly I'm just configuring what's included in the name (currently using %smart=10). By comparison, when I export from Utopia (after configuring the CSV export options, selecting exactly the fields I want to export and in which order) I can see exactly the information I'm after. With the GSAK export, I can get some of this information, but only as part of the "title" - which means I have to select that portion of text, and "scroll right" to see important information like cache type, terrain and difficulty.

Again, all in all, a minor inconvenience - but thought it worth mentioning, as I still find myself manually loading all my GPX queries into Watcher and exporting them from there.

I'd also like to second the comment above, relative to the export of hints/terrian/difficulty to a Garmin 60CS. I just received mine and have really been enjoying it - so in addition to adding USB support to GSAK (I'm currently loading my new GPSr from the latest Beta of ExpertGPS), parsing these values and putting them in the "comments" field of the 60CS would be OUTSTANDING!

Thanks again for all your hard work and continued efforts in creating and evolving such an excellent tool.

Have a great evening,

Billy

Clyde,

You know me well enough by now to ask all kinds of things about GSAK so today isn't anything different......

Is it possible to have a filter where you could put another users name so you can see the finds they have had or not? I know that would only be depending on the query you have on hand but in my case it would work real well. My finace doesn't have any finds that I don't so I could see at a moments notice on MY computer what caches she hasn't gotten. That way I could load them into the receivers from one computer.

Hope none of that made any sence.. :o

The Street and Trips export is currently fixed and under the control of GPSBabel "Under the hood". However, I do plan to add the "Utopia" feature of being able to generate your own custom CSV format - and going a step further by allowing the output file to be comma delimited text, tab delimited text, Excel spread sheet, HTML file, or Word doc. (tentatively slated for GSAK 3.2)

I'd also like to second the comment above, relative to the export of hints/terrian/difficulty

You can already get the terrain and difficulty (%ter, %dif) - It is only the hint tag that is missing (to be included in the next release)

What can I say, ClydeE... you're my HERO! :D

Hey, I just thought of a "feature request" - again, maybe I'm just missing something. For various reasons, I keep my GPX files sorted into a few folders, a couple layers deep off the "root" (C:\). So, when I do a File->Open, and am presented with the "Open GPX/LOC File" dialog...

When selecting an individual file, I can, if desired, simply type it's path (and even file name), and the browse function seems to start at the same point indentified in the previously listed file.

However, when I want to open a directory of GPX files (which is what I most often do) - I am forced to start at C:, and perform several layers of "drill down" to find the desired target folder - and then repeat this same process each time I want to load files from a different folder. Guess I can't figure out why this path isn't directly editable, or lacks the "Most Recent" feature found in the individual file selection process. Both these would be a BIG plus. I'm sure there's a very sound and logical reason for these differences - I'm just relating the "end-user experience" aspect of it.

:o

Keep up the GREAT work!

Thanks again,

Billy

I'm not sure I fully understand your question, but hopefully I can put you on the right track.

I don’t think there is currently any 100% correct way of getting your desired result.

However, with a bit of tweaking with the filter I think you can get darn close.

How good your final result will be, depends largely on how unique the user name of your fiance is.

First set a “full text search” filter that includes the required user name. This will yield ALL records that have this name anywhere in the database. However, this will possibly include records you don’t want (for example, placed caches). Now tweak the filter to exclude the records you don’t want (in the previous example include the filter “placed by” does not contain “user name”). There may be other tweaks you can make to further weed out the records that you don’t want.

This should work pretty well if the user name is fairly unique. However, if the user name was something like “Ed” you can imagine this would not work so well because the “ed” would be matched in too many unwanted places.

In a future release I will look at adding a filter by “user log”. GSAK would then interrogate the logs and only return a subset of caches that have logs by that user.

Thanks much Clyde but...... I have a query of everything within 50 miles (we haven't gone further than that). When I loaded it up and did the text search of "Catro" my fiance's name, it only showed 56 caches found when she has 80. She doesn't have any placed by her but a few with "our" name on them so I took them out in the placed by filter. That didn't change the total just the number of "mine"......

Am I on the right track??

Thanks

The problem you have now is more your source data than anything to do with GSAK

If the information is not in the database, then there is no way GSAK can give you the required totals no matter what filter is available.

The main problem being that GPX files from gc.com only contain the last 5 logs (and any founds of the USER who requested the GPX file). This means other people finds drop off the radar when they are not in the last 5 logs.

Solutions:

1. Load up an old GPX file that does have these found logs in them (a good reason to save copies of your GPX files every so often, depending on caching activity)

2. Load up a current GPX file from a gc.com PQ generated by the user in question

Just as I expected Clyde. I figured it was the data not being in the files so it wouldn't of course show it. As for keeping old files? Never have thought of doing it and probably never will.

That's ok though. She has her own queries going to her own computer with her own copy of GSAK. Matter of fact everything around here is hers... :o

Just trying to do more with less I suppose. Good idea though. :D

Until next silly idea,

Take care and everything is working just fine with the "program".....

I must admit, the open of a folder of GPX files was more of an after thought, and I didn't expect anyone to use this "most often" when compared to loading a single file.

So I am curious to know why you use this most often. Once you load a folder of GPX files into GSAK, I would have thought you woudn't need to load that folder again as all the information is already in the database, and you would then just be adding single GPX files.

Oh boy - why do I have the feeling I'm suddenly going to be very embarassed? Oh well - I'm always good for a laugh, so here goes:

The SF Bay Area is pretty densely covered in hides - so a 500-cache GPX file doesn't cover that large of an area. Between the greater Bay Area, plus Tahoe, plus a couple of places I ride my dirt bike (these latter are 100-cache queries centered around my usual locations) - I end up using just about all 20 of the available PQ slots, staggering them throughout the week. Only by compiling these queries (which, of course, have some overlap) do I get a complete "not found" set of waypoints for loading into my GPSr and PDA. So, rather than load them one by one as each one arrives throughout the week (between 3-5 each day) - it seems simpler to just dump them into a common directory, and then "refresh" the GSAK database periodically (before an outing, for example - I usually end up doing this about every other day).

Same concept applies (only more important, in my mind) in respect to finds. Until quite recently, it was easy enough to simply generate a PQ for each state (one time only for states I visit, and then a recurring one for my home state of CA) in order to get a total record of all my finds. Well, now that my CA finds have cracked the 500 mark, I'm not getting them all in a single PQ - so I'm having to slice/dice it (trying a couple different approaches - either by difficulty, terrain, date hidden - some way to break it into < 500 cache chunks). So, same theory - I want to place all these various "found" PQs (at least the few that I expect to change) into a directory, and unleash GSAK on it every couple days (okay, okay - EVERY day :o ) in an effort to have a database of ALL finds. I actually had accomplished this elusive goal a few weeks back, but I hosed my database (e.g. made some stupid mistakes) and had to start over - at least until Jeremy releases the new "all finds" special PQ.

Anyway - does that make any sense at all? If there's a simpler way to accomplish this, I'm ALL for it.. I was just commenting on the apparent inconsistency between the two (file/directory) selection dialog boxes. Knowing that the "scan a directory" was an after-thought - I'm glad you had it!

Hope this makes at least some sense.

Time for some much-needed sleep...

I will change the next release to allow direct input and default to your last used folder.

I too use the load folder, as I have about 10 queries come through in various stages through the week so I just refresh the database. Quicker than searching for the relevant gpx file in the directory.

Oh and thanks for the filter suggestion clyde - now going to go and look at the definitions of my queries on gc.com :-)

Cool, thanks. The most useful for me would be the ability to print the whole description of multiple caches (via filter or user flagged) - It would be great if you could also include the status of the last 5 logs (found, not found).

Good work as usual.

Why didn't I ship the final 1.2.2 version of Babel with GSAK? Unfortunately, this version has an even bigger problem in that GPS communications with many a Garmin GPS is broken.

We had unfortunate timing on this one. I bozoed the Garmin serial stuff (don't own one, so I don't personally test it regularly) late in the beta and it went unnoticed for a while. Between the time Clyde reported this and the time he released 3.0 of GSAK, I was travelling and my life intervened so I didn't get it fixed in time. I do plan to make 1.2.3 soonish as I've just borrowed a V for testing.

Early analysis shows the breakage in the last release to be specific to Garmin on Windows. Magellans are likely immune.

2. Beg me for a copy of the latest GPSBabel 1.2.3 Beta. Though I will not make public, I am hoping that Mr Lipe won't mind if I give it to a couple of users in need.

Why should my dad care? :o

As long as there's a version number on it (probably one that contains a date) and that version number is included with any problem report, I have no problem with that. I sort of know which GPSBabel is included with which GSAK and try to help out as I can, but it helps me to know when you're running a custom version so none of us spend time falling for the old "it works/doesn't work for me" trick.

Get me a ticket on an airplane. I've got some caches to plant..... :D

Anyplace there they sell ammo boxes, film containers, bison tubes? I'll need supplies Clyde. :D

I have that many within 22 miles of my house. Thanks to GSAK for the information!!! Sorry to hear that the number is so low. Makes me wonder why you are so involved with this program when you can load all the caches on one page. :P

Short answer, No.

GSAK was built with the intention of being a “GUI” interface for the command line challenged. GPSBabel is much better suited if you want automation and scripting.

However, I must confess you are not the first person who has asked this. I have in fact pencilled in something on my “to do” list to add some type of scripting/macro language that would allow this. But I wouldn’t get too excited as this is very much a low priority item at the moment and I suspect could take quite some time before it sees the light of day.

Link to comment

Yep, I love the app but would simply like it to auto update the database. I wouldn't go into any great depth with an entire macro language. A simple command line like below would be more than enough for most. Don't get me wrong... I'm just very appreciative of such a great app.

gsak.exe [fileneme] [database] /u

I'll add a third. Send me a 60 and accurate documentation for the USB protocol. Garmin won't provide eval units, loaner, or even discounts for developers - I've already approached them. If there's a dealer on the list that can offer an extended loan, that could possibly work.

I'm getting enough requests for this that I'm seriously considering taking up a collection or somethng.

Obviously I have had quite a few requests for this too (Why else would it be on the FAQ?)

C'mon Garmin 60c/s users, now is your chance to make a difference and help fellow users. If we could just get one of you to hook up with Robert I'm sure we could finally get USB support for you.

Clyde,

Just what are you trying to do?

First you bring out this wonder version 3 which I have just begun to learn all the functions and you up and come out with 3.01 with even more features! Geeezzz, I just may have to quit my job just to learn all the functions.

Thanks so much for such a wonderful program!!!!! I, for one, appreciate all your time and effort in making this package a wonderful experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call me Slooooooow, but is there a way. Let's start over. I have a Garmin 60CS is there a way that the hint can be automatically be placed into the notes section. I mean I really don't need to know the caches name and owner when I'm caching. I see this %hint stuff, but it's way over my head!!!! Can someone help me out?

Thanks,

Thanks,

The notes (or comments) are built by using tags in the GSAK “cache description format” field.

The default is “%name by %by (%dif/%ter)”

This translates to:

%name = the name of the cache

%by = the user name who placed the cache

%dif = Difficulty

%ter = Terrain

Anything else is left untouched (This is, a literal)

So if you just want to see the hints replace all of the above with %hint

When doing the export, click on the Help button, then click on “cache description format” in the picture, then click on the “special tags” link for a complete list of %tags than you might like to use in addition to %hint.

First, thanks for a terrific program. I really like the changes in 3.01. Except...

The new version of GPSBabel doesn't seem to work right with my 60CS. No matter what I put in the Waypoint Description Format field, I end up with some garbage like '3W' or '3WA' in the description field of the 60CS. Whatever it puts there in any given transfer is the same for all caches.

I replaced the new GPSBabel with the version from GSAK 3.0 final and it seems to be working OK.

I get the same thing with my Garmin GPS V. I must admit though that I have no idea if a previous version worked or not. I very rarely refer to the waypoint note section.

Same thing happens on my 76. GPSBabel Version 1.2.3_beta04092004 on it's own puts the cache name in the waypoint comments field OK.

OK I was able to get the tags I wanted, saved it to a MPS file, opened it in MapSource and the description lists everything I want it too, not much really. But when i load it to my Garmin 60CS I don't get all of the info in the "note" column. Ideas?

The Garmin 60c/s only allows 30 characters for the notes field (a ridiculous limit in my opinion), so If your generated waypoint description is greater than 30 characters it will be truncated
