+Snoogans
I was just trying to shorten my forum title and occupation when I started getting this error: Cannot create a row of size 8563 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060. The statement has been terminated. I didn't ADD 503 characters. I was shortening both items by several characters. I haven't added a thing. Why am I getting this error? I can't change my profile information. Link to comment
+ZackJones
Snoogans: It's a database error. The plain English answer is shorten up your profile a bilt and you should be OK. The long, geek answer is SQL Server can store a maximum of 8060 bytes of information per row. If you exceed the database update fails. This could be fixed by shortening the length used for other fields in the database table or changing some datatypes in the database. One easy fix Jeremy could do is to set the maximum length property for the profile section of the web page. Zack Been there, fixed that one before. Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
I'm with Snoogans on this one; something may be up with editing profiles. Last evening I tried making some simple changes to my profile -- updating the fact that Little Lep is now in 5th grade rather than 4th grade, and adding two states to the list of places where we've found caches. I got an error message saying something like "binary string would be truncated" and the changes didn't take. Knowing that my profile is pushing the existing size limit, I went back and took great pains to be sure that I had FEWER characters in my text than when I began editing. Got the same error message. Jeremy
We modified profiles to use HTMLTidy. What that basically means is after you hit the edit button, it corrects the formatting of your HTML. I believe I modified the settings so it doesn't pad your html and, as a result, add additional characters that go over the limit. I'll see if I can convert the type in the database to include more information. I'll also make sure that HTMLTidy isn't padding characters. Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
Thanks Jeremy for the quick explanation! Even before you started using HTMLTidy, I was bumping the size limit. My profile is beginning to look more like the beginning of a nice personal geocaching web page. Perhaps it's time to do that. Then again, perhaps it's time I stopped using AOL. Link to comment
Jeremy
Crap. When did that happen? Apparently it throws in the header and footer tags now. I'll correct this shortly Link to comment
Jeremy
I figured out the problem. The HTMLTidy settings were removed from the location it was pointing to. I have modified the configuration on the web site to point to a permanent configuration for the application. Try editing it now and it should remove the extra html junk from your listing. I'll still look into increasing the size of the profile. I'm glad people are using that feature! Maybe I can set up some creative mapping so you can do a link like this: http://www.geocaching.com/users/jeremy Link to comment
+Snoogans
Thanks for taking care of it. It's fixed now. Link to comment

+RJFerret
Maybe I can set up some creative mapping so you can do a link like this: http://www.geocaching.com/users/jeremy That would ROCK. Then it would also be a lot easier to find other users rather than having to call up, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?u= and click through links to get someone's profile. (Which seems to be quickest.) It would also facilitate sharing info w/non-geocachers like family/friends and take the edge off the whole "friends" connection feature request. I've always put my profile to good use--perhaps TOO good! Thanks, Randy PS: A button to avoid the HTMLTidy processing would be nice too--I save my profile text separately to avoid the formatting chaos it introduces. Link to comment
+Markwell
It would also facilitate sharing info w/non-geocachers like family/friends and take the edge off the whole "friends" connection feature request. Problem is that you must be logged in to view a profile. If you've got a non-geocacher, they can't click on www.geocaching.com/user/markwell and get anything more than a page saying... Profile for User: Markwell Sorry. You must first log in to view this profile. Link to comment
Jeremy
I may change this so you can see general details, but obviously it won't expose your email address. Link to comment
+filler & bcat
The original bug Snoogans noted in 2004 appears to be back. I attempted to tack on some additional information into our user account profile and I recieved a similar error. Cannot create a row of size 8127 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060. The statement has been terminated. Is this error expected or unexpected? Link to comment
+RJFerret
Since this thread I've learned of this option: [url=http://www.geocaching.com/profile/Default.aspx?u=RJFerret]http://www.geocaching.com/profile/Default.aspx?u=RJFerret[/url You need to use %20 for spaces in user names obviously. I may change this so you can see general details, but obviously it won't expose your email address. If this made it to the 'To Do' list, not showing location would be good too. Enjoy, Randy Link to comment
