Wowza the Yanks had a good night. Cool record. I would have rather seen another team do it though ;)
Our lowly Jays can't even beat the Royals :(

Yeah well my beloved Twins got swept in a 4 game series at home against the Orioles. Ouch.

I'm feeling sporting so do you care to make a friendly wager for the rest of the series? If the Twins win 2 of the next 3 games (not counting tonight's game of course) you have to name a cache in honor of the Twins. If the BO Sox win 2 of the next 3 games I will name a cache in honor of the Sox. Sound fair???

Lucky for you that I wasn't able to take you up on this in time. :D

Sox ended up winning 9 - 5 today, so they took 2 of the next 3 after you suggested the bet.

The Red Sox are now in third place, probably about the best position they've been in so far this season. Twins aren't in last at the moment, if it makes you feel any better.

Yeah well I made the bet so I'm willing to hold up my end of the bargain. I'll post a link when I get around to placing the cache.

The Boston Red Sox are Wicked Awesome

I look forward to seeing the BoSox come to Philly to not win the World Series again.

That is definitely possible. I can see the Red Sox's hitting pulling them through early in the playoffs only to come up against superior pitching -- like, say, the Phillies.

Unless of course the Phillies' bats decide to go on vacation then (it has happened before).

Anyway, I have tickets for game 7, talk about mixed emotions. Sure, I wanna see a World Series game, but do I want the series to get to game 7?

The Red Sox had a three-game sweep in Arlington last week.

The Sox won three in a row in that series, but it wasn't a sweep. They lost the first game of that series, plus were swept by Texas in a three game series at the beginning of the season.

Another 3 game series against the Rangers coming up this weekend in Boston - should be interesting!

Is baseball important? Now that preseason football games are being played, that takes the first four pages of the sports section. Baseball is relegated to the middle.

Who's got a World Series prediction?

I'll say Phillies over Rangers in 6.

NY Mets in both '69 and '86. Bet the ranch, they're a dead lock on those two years.

Nah, it's gonna end poorly, but that's my Metsies.

On the plus side, field level box seats can be had for around $25 on StubHub.

Philly is unstoppable. I think they will win. From the AL I'm not sure if I like Texas or the stoopid yanks. Bosox are GOOD but pitching isn't as deep as it needs to be. Go Jays Go!

As I have stated before, in my house we only root for two baseball teams. The NY Mets and whoever is playing the Yankers.

Team 9282 offspring now in Boston at Boston University. Her dorm is right down the street from Fenway Park. If the BoSox get into the series she might get to see a world series game. That would be cool.

Sigh. I drove by Fenway Park today. Sad to think that between now and next spring the only thing that will go on there is a hockey game.

It's been a tough month for Red Sox fans. And Francona leaving isn't what I wanted to hear today, but I understand why he wants to move on.

For many fans, it was clear several weeks ago that even if the Sox made the post season they wouldn't make it out of the first round. For those of us watching closely, it was very hard to understand what was happening to the Sox over the last month. But the picture is becoming clearer now that the season is over, and I think we'll hear more in the days and weeks ahead. Much of this is speculation, but it appears that early in September, the combination of a comfortable lead in the standings, lack of clubhouse leadership, and a sense of entitlement from some of the wealthier players on the team led to a complacency that Terry Francona couldn't manage his way out of.

Injuries played a role, I suppose. But every team has injuries - some teams just rise above them better than others.

Personally, I hold the players responsible for this historic meltdown. But there is plenty of blame to go around, including some for Theo Epstein (GM) and John Henry (principal owner).

For me, the worst part of this is that the Red Sox are now in pretty sad shape. Considering the serious problems with the current roster (including some very large contracts for under-performing and non-performing players), the reorganization that is bound to follow the events of the last month, and strong competition in the AL East, it seems unlikely to me that the Red Sox will see the post season for 3 to 5 years. I hope I'm wrong.

I'll give credit to Tampa Bay. Without a huge payroll, they've created a very competitive team of young players. They should do well over the next couple of years.

I'll be pulling for the Tigers for the rest of the year.

I read an interesting Tom Verducci article this morning about the game last night. I thought the article covered the drama and the specific events of the game very well. I hadn't realized that the Rangers were only a single strike away from winning when their right fielder, Nelson Cruz, was unable to make the final out because he was playing too shallow. He should have been playing deeper (when you are in the field with a lead in the bottom of the ninth, you always play deep so that the ball doesn't go over your head).

But what I liked most about the article was the way the author related the Rangers' current situation to memorable moments in Red Sox history. I've highlighted parts of the article below.

Quote

With one more Rangers loss, Nelson Cruz is the Bill Buckner of Texas.

Quote

Now there are only two paths left for the Rangers, both of which have the footprints of historic teams.

They can become the 1975 Cincinnati Reds. Those Reds lost a torturous Game 6 on the road in Boston. That was the Carlton Fisk game. Indeed, Freese joined Fisk, Bill Mazeroski (1960), Kirby Puckett (1991) and Joe Carter (1993) as the only players to hit a World Series walkoff homer in Game 6 or later. Those are some of the most iconic home runs in baseball history, which tells you of the magnitude of Freese's blast.

But the Reds recovered from the cinematic Fisk homer -- recovered even from a 3-0 deficit heading into the sixth inning -- to win Game 7 on the road, 4-3.

There is one other option for the Rangers. They become the 1986 Red Sox, who also were one strike away from winning the world championship and never did get it back. Game 6 against the Mets was the Buckner game, the first baseman's error coming with the game tied to send home the winning run at Shea Stadium.

The Red Sox, as they did in 1975, took a 3-0 into the sixth inning of Game 7, only to have the Mets storm back and win, 8-5. Those Red Sox also were on the road -- part of a streak of eight straight losses by the visiting team in World Series Game 7s
.

Congrats to the Cards on a very exciting series win.

I hope the Twins can get some decent starting pitching and also figure out a way to get everyone healthy this offseason. Pitchers and catchers report in about 3.5 months.

BUMP!!!

My beloved Twins started off the season 0-4 before I pulled out my lucky hat yesterday and willed them to a win last night against the Angels. The first month of their schedule is so tough that I would not be surprised if they started the season 10-30. Ouch.

How is everyone else's team looking thus far?

As usual the AL East standings look almost completely upside down to start the year off. Though it would be awesome to see the Yanks and Bosox struggle and stay down near the bottom

With Baltimore coming to town this weekend should be a confidence booster if anything ;) Go Jays Go!!

My beloved Tigers are looking better then expected. Just about everyone is getting in on the offense and they must have missed the prediction that their defense would be non-existent. Now all they have to do is get a win for the starting pitching.

The Twins knocked out 20 hits yesterday in a 10-9 win over the Angels. Cool to see but they are not gonna win many games if it takes that many hits and runs to get the job done.

I note that today is the 50th anniversary of the NY Mets first home game, at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan (this was before Shea Stadium was finished). They lost to the Piggsburgh Pirates (an event for which I have never forgiven that particular city).

But my fondest memory of that game is that I WAS THERE. I was 7 at the time, and my father took my brother and I out of school to go see the game. So yeah, I've been a Met fan since '62.

And I can make a claim that no Yankers fan can make. I was there at the first Mets home game. There are no Yanker fans alive that were at the first Yanker game anywhere.

This comforts me for some reason.

My personal mantra regarding baseball: "I'm a Mets fan. I can't live without the aggravation."

Based on the way the Sox are playing this year, and after experiencing that horrible game in which the Sox blew a 9 run lead to the Yankees, I'm not in a position to laugh at anybody!

Don't give up! The Twins won yesterday, bringing their record to 7 - 18!

The Red Sox have dropped 3 in a row now. I went to Fenway for the second time this year on Tuesday. The Sox lost, but I still enjoyed the game.

I have a bet with a coworker about the Twins this year. I said they would go 42-120 and he said there was no way they would lose more than 90 games. So we placed a friendly wager: If the Twins lose more than 91 games then he owes me an ice cold Mountain Dew.

Congratulations! After today's loss, only 72 more losses separate you from your ice cold Mountain Dew! :)

The Sox lost too, but in a much more painful fashion than what the Twins had to endure. To sum up, Sox lost by 3 runs, but in the 17th inning, resulting in a sweep by the Orioles. Left fielder Darnell McDonald was the losing pitcher. It could have been any non-pitcher who had to take the loss, but I guess McDonald drew the short straw.

And now the fact that the bullpen (which pitched more innings than the starters in this series) has been completely burned out in the sweep means that the pain will carry forward into the next series.

Before Sunday's game, the nine hits in the previous four games by Minnesota - including a no-hitter by the Angels' Jered Weaver and a combined one-hitter courtesy mostly of Felix Hernandez on Saturday night - were the fewest hits in a four-game span since 1900, according to statistics provided by the Twins from the Elias Sports Bureau.

**SIGH**

I am going to the game on Wednesday night to watch them play the Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem. They have actually done pretty well against L.A. this season so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

And now the fact that the bullpen (which pitched more innings than the starters in this series) has been completely burned out in the sweep means that the pain will carry forward into the next series.

The Orioles' winning pitcher of record was also a position player. He pitched two innings of scoreless ball. The Sox should consider trading, and adding him to their rotation.

I was going to put this in Weird News but since it is already here:

From TWWLIS via the Elias Sports Bureau

"Davis became the first player to go 0-for-8 in a game in which he pitched since Leon Cadore for the 1920 Brooklyn Robins against the Boston Braves. The neat thing about that: Cadore pitched 26 innings in a game that finished in a tie.

He was also the first player to go 0-for-8 and earn a win since Hall-of-Famer Rube Waddell for the 1905 Philadelphia Athletics against those same Red Sox. Waddell not only won-- he pitched a 20-inning complete game."

Davis is Chris Davis, the Oriole player that earned the win and started the marathon game as the DH (OH-for-eight!)for the Birds

With the Jays in Minni for a 4 gamer I'm hoping we can help TD get a little closer to his icey cold one! ;)

Thanks. While there is no such thing as a mortal lock the Twins losing 90+ games is as close as I've ever seen. It is just flat out sad to see the state of this team right now. As recently as 12 months ago they were supposed to be World Series contenders. Now they are looking like a team that will be rebuilding for years to come.

Hey we went through that for almost 20 years in Toronto. Since the 92 and 93 Championships they have been in a re-building phase ever since! Things are looking good this year... Hoping they can keep it together! Also hoping Vladdi G can get his groove back in the minors and come shag some flies for the boys in blue!

If it makes you feel any better, the Red Sox are also on a path to lose more than 90 games this year (they currently have a .387 winning percentage, which, if they end the season that way, means 99 loses).

The Sox need to dump Beckett and Valentine.

I made the mistake of attending the Oriels / Blue Jays game the other week -- my first experience of baseball. It was, on the whole, a singularly unengaging experience, bar the occasional crushingly-embarrassing interlude where the meagre crowd were whipped-up into an infantile frenzy by some nonsense on the video screen.

Perhaps I just went to the wrong game: weather too cold, teams too rubbish.

Nah! Sounds like a pretty standard baseball game to me!

The Sox have now won two games in a row.

Two. In a row.

I do not know what to think.

With a 12 - 1 win this afternoon, make that three in a row! :D

That's 3 out of 4 against the AL Central leading Indians. Makes no sense! Posted Image

Oh, I'm pretty sure I still have a better than average chance at a free can of the nectar of the gods. My beloved Twins are still on track to lose 114 games this year. It was nice to see them play well against the Jays...a team that has had the Twins' number for what feels like 10 years now. Almost as bad as the HATED Yankees.

My beloved Twins just notched their 11th win of the season. YES!!! They've done better than the 10-30 "I would not be surprised if this was their record after 40 games" prediction I made over a month ago.

My beloved Twins just swept the Tigers at Detroit! Yes, it was only a 2 game series but I'll take it!!!

Woohoo! Tampa swept us (Jays) but we spanked the Yanks last night - looking to continue that trend tonight and tomorrow before the Mets come to town ;)

Hey Scott - how about a friendly little OT wager on the Jays/ Mets series?
