rescue557
I've been looking around at all the different travel bugs out there. People have some crazy things like bricks and even cars. But what is one thing that has not been made into a travel bug yet? Is there anything that could not be used as a travel bug, regardless of size or weight? Quote Link to comment

+Metaphor
how 'bout my lucky cat's foot? I don't have one yet, but I'm eying that obnoxious beast my wife keeps around the house to get back at me for something I must have done.... Seriously, if in good taste, use it... right now I'm in posession of Louie the Wander bug which has nothing but the tag and a chain... whatever floats your boat, and is not too obnoxious (see threads about monkey with enlarged ******** and Waffen SS trooper doll -- I'm too lazy to look them up for a Markwell...) +Eartha
No: knives, guns, ammo, alcohol, drugs, or drug paraphenalia, and we really try to stay away from pornographic materials too. Family friendly is the way to go. What do you want your travel bug to accomplish? Read the two pinned threads about success and failure at the top of the travel bug forums for some ideas. +Renegade Knight
You can use anything at all as a travel bug. You just can't expect everything you could use to actually travel. Quote Link to comment
rescue557
Okay, I came up with an idea that I KNOW that nobody has done before! My idea is to take a decomissioned public pay phone, strip all of the heavy insides out, and make it into a travel bug. As it is, it weighs about 40 pounds, but with the insides removed and filled with foam sealant, it should be much lighter. What is your take on this new and outrageous idea? Quote Link to comment

That would actually make a better (and more evil) cache... Quote Link to comment
+AuntieWeasel
Well, I shall give it a try. That is actually pretty cool bug. It would be great if there was a way to hang it on things. Okay, I'm sure it would be stolen instantly. I just thought, since it will be hard to find caches it will fit in, it would be cool to find a payphone attached to a tree out in the woods. Oh, and thanks for letting us riff on my misunderstanding of the thread purpose... Quote Link to comment
rescue557
I thought of making it a cache container but then realized that there is a safety issue with it. You see, to open it requires a very strong person with good coordination as it seporates into two very heavy parts roughly 20 pounds each. I don't know about you, but having a 20 pound chunk of pay phone fall on you could result in a bad cache experience. Also, to keep it in one place, I'd likely have to bolt it down to a tree or something, which, to some people is a horrible thing to do to a tree. Also, if someone needed to make a phone call while out in the woods they might try and use the phone and then sue someone because it wasn't working in their time of crisis or emergency. So, there went that idea too. But yes, the thought did cross my mind several times. I think that in the future I may be making a few urban TB's with things you commonly find in such a setting. Has anybody come up with the idea of having travel bugs that were as hard to find as caches? What if I made a joke pile of plastic dog poop into a travel bug? jtemple
I'd like to make myself a travel bug! On my office daydream trips, I see myself bicycling across the country, with some sort of vehicle tracking device. The location would update frequently during the day, and as I travel across areas, I'd appear on the area's weekly cache update. Geocachers could find me when I camp for the evening, and keep me company! I'd have my own website: "Where's Jim right now?" (map included) "What's the weather at Jim's location?" (weather sidebar) "Jim's daily update" (weblog). Of course, I'd (obviously) be the one moving the travel bug along, which would sort of negate the purpose, but what the hey, it's my thought... Mushtang
You should have ridden along with ClayJar on his Alaska Quest 2004. Quote Link to comment
jtemple
Sounds interesting. How did he track himself, and is there a website? --Jim Quote Link to comment
Mushtang
His trip was a cache and not a travel bug, but he brought TBs with him so that's why I joked you should have ridden along. His cache page is HERE. It's over now, but he rode from LA up to Alaska and back again. Before he left he had the first signing at a GGA event in Georgia (I'm on page 9 of his log book). And when he got back he went to Geo-woodstock II in Tenn. There's a link on his cache page to a tracking page that was updated a few times a day to show where he was. It was fun watching. jtemple
I was actually browsing his cache page when you wrote back. Sounds like it was a blast! Of course, going cross country on a bike is more of a lottery dream, but what the hey, it's fun to imagine! Quote Link to comment
