How often do I have to contribute an article to get a free subscription? :D<_<

(BTW- I'm writing one now and I have 3 more that I started and never got around to finishing.) (Maybe having a goal will help. I'm goin' for the Andy Rooney angle.)

Today's Cacher has set the wheels in motion to go hard copy.

Your thoughts?

Good luck with that.

I think I'll just read it online.

Besides, it's kind of hard to take your sigline seriously when I see very little mention (any?) of the other geocaching sites and comments from the editor being very gc.com centric.

Thanks anyway.

Can I ask why?

Are you going to eliminate the articles from being accessible on the Internet? If not, why would someone subscribe?

I don't think there's so much content (at least today) that makes it less then desirable to read online.

Most print magazines now have online versions. It doesn't seem to keep people from subscribing. Though with some of the online versions, you do have to pay to access some, or all of the content.

Besides, it's kind of hard to take your sigline seriously when I see very little mention (any?) of the other geocaching sites and comments from the editor being very gc.com centric.

Because the the geocaching world is GC.COM centric and the other sites are practically useless. Car & Driver magazine makes very little mention of small Sri Lankan auto makers and of guys who slap together cars in their garage. Same thing here.

Well done. I like that analogy.

To use your choice of words, if that little Sri Lankan auto maker came up with an innovation to the industry and then outran the next biggest competition to GM in say, 18 months or less, I bet C&D would be doing regular articles on its progress well before it overtook them.

I like my analogy better:

If little brown website overtook stagnant blue website, big green website and its members might need to sit up and take notice. There's more than one lane on the geocaching highway.

On the geocaching highway, I happily ride in all of its lanes and I don't blow through the toll booths. I don't take sides, but I have definite opinions. My opinion is that if a publication gives me only a portion of the picture. It won't get my business for very long but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. I think that's sorta the point CR was making. (Someone hand CR his nitro pills when he realizes that I kinda sorta agree with him on something. <_< )

Actually I think it may stem more from the fact that Sri Lankan auto makers and guys working in their garages don't have big advertising budgets. No budget for ads no real need to write about them.

Pardon me while I wipe the spewed coffee off my monitor.

You're equating Today's Cacher to Car & Driver? <_<

I do remember back long ago when I read 4Wheel and Offroad a little article of an upstart in the 4by world called Suzuki. The mag even gave the little machines high marks for grunt and being able to go places where even a CJ5 couldn't because of sheer size. But if they took your view Suzuki would be beneath them to even consider because it's worthless. Suzukis have a good following and show that the off road world is more than just Jeep. (Not to bash Jeep as the only 4by I've ever owned was a Jeep.)

If you're going to be "The Magazine For Geocachers Everywhere" then you need to be the magazine for geocachers everywhere, not just those on gc.com.

To point, instead of claiming moving caches are banned, make sure you qualify that by saying they are banned on gc.com. If someone wants to place a moving cache, don't say they are prohibited, tell them about movingcache.com. Don't pretend they don't exist.

Granted gc.com is the center of the geocaching universe, it isn't the whole of the universe and don't pretend it is. Until Today's Cacher is more than essentially a mouth piece for gc.com, I'll give it a pass.

Love to argue with ya buddy. I'm keepin' one foot on the fence and the other hasn't quite hit the ground on your side, but your logic is pretty sound to me on this occasion. :P

Howdy from OK...

Couple thoughts to share...while I haven't been a prolific poster...I have been observing a lot of the dynamics here in the discussion forums over the last seven months...so here goes...

- Getting paying subscribers may be a challenge...given the number of people who love to use GC.com , and its computer system resources, on a seemingly daily basis, but just can't seem to part with $30 a year.

- I agree that while GC.com is the major player, the magazine should be unbiased and objective to all geocaching venues and interests...unless the magazine was being underwritten by GC.com. Then, of course, like it or not, it would be a mouthpiece for GC.com...and some folks simply wouldn't support it for that reason. (Probably on principle...even though, without GC.com, caching would most likely be on a scale much smaller than it is today...and there would be no talk of a magazine)

Done right, this could be a great venture...bringing together all the different caching "dialects" from across the USA and even the world.

I most likely will subscribe...to give it a chance.

Cache on...

One of our major feature stories in September was about geodashing, an alternative to geocaching, listed by GPSGames.org. We have invited cachers to write about other sites, too.

Although GC.com has provided support to our endeavor, they have never asked that we include or exclude any material. We are our own entity, and our plans have always included “geocachers everywhere.”

Since the mainstream of geocachers comes from GC.com, the majority of our stories do represent that website’s views, guidelines and standards. Most of our material is submitted, non-solicited.

If you would like to see stories about your favorite alternative websites in Today’s Cacher, I invite you to submit an article. Very few submitted articles have not been published; most declined material is not related to geocaching or not original.

Editor.<_<

Today's cachers goals were to grow into a for profit magazine. There were other ideas on the table at the time but El Diablo's vision won out and Today's Cacher grew out of it under his leadership.

As CR had noticed it's GC.com centric. The reason was El Diablo felt that to get the readership he needed, support from GC.com was needed and it showed up in our weekly cache email etc. When I have local cachers who don't participate in the forums emaling me links to Today's Cacher clearly the strategy has worked.

Brian has noted the other reasons. If things change El Diablo's Todays Cacher will either change or die.

Look at this page, bottom letter. That is what has chapped my hide. What's with the editorializing on the "Letters" page?

Although Moving caches are mentioned in the book as a type of cache, they were banned in early to mid 2003 since they were perceived to violate the spirit of Geocaching as well as causing logistical problems.
"Banned?" By who? That's my point.

Moving caches are only banned on gc.com that I know of. Instead of trying to make the letter writter look like an idiot with that rebuttal, why not try to help them get their moving cache out there for folks to enjoy? There are at least two sites that I know of right off the top of my head where moving caches are welcome and are, in fact, geared towards moving caches or hitch hikers.

That also illustrates the bias of some of the higher staff.

So I just checked out www.todayscacher.com, sorry to say I was not very impressed. The site is nice but lacks information! If the site is representitive of what will be in hardcopy, take me off the list untill it matures more.

My 2 cents....... <_<

Can you give us examples of information that is lacking in the magazine ... thanks for your honesty.

I would subscribe to a printed version of TC. :D

CR tell us more about this moving cache thingy

<_<

Well, there's travelertags.com and some other site which I can't think of the name right now.

um, ... It's on the tip of my tonque. I just can't think of it!

:D

What's that in your sig line?

On the cool caches page I was expecting like a list of cool caches. Maybe it's just me.

No, its not just you ... I like the idea. It would be great to list a handful of very cool caches each month (maybe just a simple list). We could have people submit to the magazine a list of their favorites and each month we would provide the list for pure informational purposes only. I'm not discounting the stories and editorials because those are popular features, however, I see your point and it is a good one. Thank you.

No problem......when I clicked on something I was expecting to see more information instead of stories or editorials. On the cool caches page I was expecting like a list of cool caches. Maybe it's just me.

This is almost opposite of what I was thinking. To me Today's Cacher is lacking some depth. A list of caches would be interesting I suppose but I'd rather an article focused on a single cache or area. I really liked an earlier article I read about the cache Tube Torture... while that is a pretty unique cache I think those kind of articles apeal most to me. When I think of a geocaching magazine I want to hear about Geocaching... and a few more pictures wouldn't hurt either. There are so many caches out there... Imposable to get them all... so I'd like to see a few that I'll probably never reach.

As far as a printed magazine... I'd like to see a little improvement first, but otherwise I like the idea.

You might want to check out some of the previous issues. We depend on cachers to submit articles for the magazine, unfortunately we don't always receive articles for all topics every month.

As far as seeing more information rather than stories or editorials...the magazine is mainly for entertainment, however we do articles that offer information from time to time. Of course all the articles by Doc Dean and Clearpath in the Health section is always informative. I noticed that one of Doc Dean's articles on mosquitos was picked ub by USDA and was linked to the magazine.

Maybe you should have a topic of the month and then cachers can submit stories pertaining to the topic.

Don't get me wrong, I like the website and have it bookmarked. I will go back. I just feel it is at its beginning stage and it will turn into a great magazine. I think it is a great idea! Thanks for listening!

I wonder if there will ever be a paid staff or if contributors will be paid for their work.

I sometimes wonder too. <_<

...or will just the principals reap the harvest while the underlings get no pay and no glory.

CR, you're welcome to every bit of the harvest, all the pay and the sum total of glory that I have received from my association with Today's Cacher. :D:lol:

I challenge you to go back through all of our issues and find just one example of where we are GC's mouthpiece.

As Richard stated earlier....We do not ask GC's permission to publish an article. GC is a sponser of ours and we take great pride in that fact. I will never allow an article in Today's Cacher that bashes GC, nor will I ever allow an article that bashes one of the alternate sites.

El Diablo, Tee and all of the fine volunteers at Today's Cacher - Great Job!

I personally hope your subscription flies and you all get stinking rich!

My only suggestion to Today's Cacher is to make the emailed version for-fee - I don't need more paper cluttering up the place and am perfectly willing to pay for an emailed copy. Maybe keep all past editions available online free and charge for sending the current edition.

Now, my suggestion to all who are complaining and criticizing - get to writing!

Today's Cacher has repeatedly told you that it welcomes your articles, so if you don't like the content - get busy and change it!

One article from you will be more effective than 1000 complaints!
